Hello All,

I've Just purchased a 1993 Rover 820SLi. Oil and Coolant is leaking out of the side of the engine where the block and head meet (head gasket) Is my only option to change the head gasket (and is that all it will require...or is there more to them) to cure this problem as there is absolutely no oil and water mixing...just leaking out of the side quite severely. How much will the parts cost as I'm thinking of having a go at this by myself. If I dont how much will labour cost. Read more

But the Klinger gasket is only any good if both the sealing faces are in 100% good condition..

Hi Members

We are going to buy car for our daughter for her 21st birthday present. She's in love with the Mazda RX 8 and we've got the brochures a few months back, and since then have seen the car in the flesh.

Tomorrow, we were hoping to place an order for this car. However, as luck would have it I've just read an interesting HJ article about 'WHAT'S BAD,' about this car. I could not believe what I read and asked my family to confirm that I was not mistaken.

Our daughter will use the car mainly for very short journeys and this may be the massive problem that has resulted in us reconsidering placing an order for this car/steam engine?

Please let me know if we are living in the 21st century? Surely they cannot be serious!!

Read the link and tell me it's not true!!!

"For the record, we will NOT be buying this dated technology."

It's just occurred to me that the RX-8 has rear 'suicide' doors. You can't get much more dated than that...

C'mon Mazda, shape up. You've lost a potential customer here with these SILLY oversights.

could any nice person please give me some advice. I've recently purchased a renault megane coupe 1.6L, and i have a small prob with the gearbox. when i'm changing from 2nd gear to 3rd, it wont go into gear. i have to put the stick to neutral, then back into 3rd to get it in. If im changing from 4th to 3rd, it goes in no problem. could anybody tell me what the prob is and how much it will cost to fix. cheers Read more

I have had a 1999 1.6 8v Clio since new which I believe may share the same gearbox as the Megane and have experienced a similar problem - changing up from 1st to 2nd mainly. Have had the gear box oil changed several times and that seems make a difference for a while, but other than that I have learnt to live with the problem - changing gear slowly seems to help, so I have had to wave goodbye to the racing starts......

Hi,

I'm back!

Head gassket has gone, garage up road quoted me £235 fixed price to renew it. £59 for parts £176 for labour, this seemed quite reasonable to me but I just wanted to get a second opinion.

Cheers

Daz

Hi, yes this is for everything all in inc all parts and vat so if u paid £200 for a Cavalier £35 more seems reasonable.

Cheers

I've just bought a 1.4GHz processor for my Pentium 3 machine, which is currently 866MHz. I have checked that it is a socket 370 (same as at present) so I'm assuming it's just a plug in jobby. My son has already alerted me that I may have to upgrade the cooling. Although I've done a few upgrades before (CD-R, memory, extra hard disk, network card etc) I've never tried replacing the processor....is there anything different to this particular upgrade I should be aware of before I start?? Read more

Mike H

Well, I tried fitting the new processor at the weekend but appear to have trashed my computer in doing so. The first thing that happened was the heat sink became detached from my old 866Mhz processor. Then I put the new 1.4Ghz one in & nothing happened other than a bit of chatter from the hard drive - it didn't even light up the monitor. So I put the old chip back in - getting random problems but essentially it won't get further than reading the hard disk, turning the monitor out of standby, then stopping - sometimes halfway through displaying the Dell logo, sometimes random characters on the screen, sometimes error message saying it can't find PCI.SYS and to reload the operating system........won't even boot from floppy or the support disk.

Unless anyone has got any better ideas I shall be buying a new motherboard. In the interim my old W95 Tiny has been brought back into use! I've managed to slave in the hard disks from my Dell to extract the data I need.

So much for a cheap and easy upgrade!!

Hi all,

Report from recent service was told about front brake ridged/lipped. The technician hasn't recommended further work, what is the implication? Will this result a major costly work at a later stage?

I need a second opinion.

Thanks,
Dumb Read more

You need to measure the thickness of the disc where the pads bear on it; i.e the worn, shiny area. Use a micrometer for this and check with your Honda dealer what the permissible disc thickness should be. If the ridging is more than about 2mm you will probably need new discs.

superstyler

after having full experince of car sellers "blags" i wondered if anyone has any tales of con-men in the car trade!!!! lets name some!!!!! Read more

Dynamic Dave

By the statement "lets name some", I am assuming superstyler (formerly sp30) is refering to car seller blags rather than actually naming the con men themselves.

Usual rules apply. No naming / shaming.

I notice that we may see a drop in the ever inceasing nubers of American Style double cab pick up trucks which need two normal size parking bays.Under the present rules company car drivers could opt to have one of these, often luxuriously appointed, instead of a car.The notional tax on them was £500 resulting in a tax bill of £200,it will now be £3000 costing the driver £1200,I must say this is the only increase in motoring costs I have ever ageed with.

This is just one of a number of tax dodges he's plugged. With a £35bn defecit I can't blame him, after all, we'd all be complaining if interest rates had to go up to pay for it in a few years time. The guy's got a job to do after all.

I had thought about doing something similar for my business, but I can't see myself perting with huge sums of money for something I would just abuse.

I'll be running the van as a company vehicle and using the Discovery as a personal vehicle and to visit clients perhaps and just claim back the mileage from the company when on company business.

I just had a big argument with my father. I think it´s an age thing (I am 33 he is 62!).

A friend of his had a BMW 323i of ´86 that he changed recently for an almost new Golf 1.4! He soon got depressed with his new car and he is planning to change once more for an Audi A4 1.6 model 2000.
Judging from my wife´s A3 1.6 of 2002, I am trying to convince them that the A4 with 1.6 engine is hardly an improvement after the "lazy" Golf 1.4 . I did try to find the specs. for the A4 1.6 in the net but without any luck...(are they hiding them???)

Another issue that came was the possibility to hide the true milage of the specific car by turning back the odometer. My old man argues that it´s still possible (with conventional tech.) to "turn back time" while I insist that these latest technology instruments don´t allow such "modifications".

I would like to hear your opinions in relation to both these subjects...Am I an arrogant silly son, or is it that my father needs urgently an update???

Thank you for your patience,

My Alfa recently (at 15k miles) had a new speedo fitted.
The garage made a note of the mileage in the service
book. I asked if they could just set the digital reading
to what it was before, they said you couldnt.

Sorry PR, unless Alfa have fitted some sort of anti-tamper device to their odometers, they were wrong. Or perhaps they just didn't want to incur that £70 cost.
Possibly it's against their principles to adjust the mileage higher... ;)
