Hey all, I've been researching this but it seems hard to find unbiased advice. Every comment online seems to come from a musk worshiper or hater so they're so polarized it's hard to find anything that seems unbiased. I thought people here would have more trustworthy advice.

I'm not going to be buying anything for at least a year but I recently got a salary upgrade and a "cheap" used tesla isn't out of my price range anymore. My biggest concern would be the risk of the battery going kaput but apart from that, is it worth the risk? I'd save a lot on fuel but not nearly enough to justify the car. I kind of just want a Tesla after driving a friend's and being blown away. ... Read more

Not Tesla but I do know someone who has just bought a 3 year old Porsche Taycan.

It will be interesting to see how he gets on with it. Previous cars have been Range Rover diesel, S class hybrid, Range Rover hybrid and now a Taycan.

My daughter is thinking of buying a 2017-on Swift 1.2. I have heard by word of mouth that the Swift manual gearbox is prone to premature failure - maybe bearings? Any truth to that? Read more

Our bought from new 2011 Swift has 87,000 on the clock now and we loved it. Sold it at 10 years old, Yeah it’s plasticky and rattles a bit but it was such great fun. Like a little go cart and great to drive. Other than service items, it had a new mirror heater element and windows switch in ten years. Nothing else. Both cost less than £50 including fitting.

Hi there,

I am looking for recommendations on used cars that still have a traditional torque converter auto gearbox and are reliable? Budget max £10k and small hatchback or similar... Read more

The best probably come from either ZF, eg. their ubiquitous HP6 for larger high performance cars, or from the largest autobox makers on the planet, Aisin, especially their AWTF series. Search on their applications to find a car that suits you. Their six speed boxes have been around for yonks, newer cars have 8 speeds; goodness knows why - our little Peugeot's 'EAT6' doesn't often get into 5th around town let alone 6th, which only engages at a relaxed 57mph and around 2,600 rpm. With a light right foot, the engine revs will never exceed 3,000rpm as 6th is 30mph per 1000rpm. Can't understand why anyone would possibly want a manual box these days.

8-speeds are more economical than 6-speeds - the torque converter can remain locked during gear changes while the TCU cuts the torque for a few milli-seconds to give a smooth change...

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to know your opinion on Seat Arona. I am looking for a compact SUV under 12k budget.
I like the VW Tcross, but good examples are above my budget. So I was thinking to go with its sibling Arona. Do you guys have any other suggestions that I should consider.
My priority is for a petrol vehicle with a fun to drive character.

Thank you :)

So started a new thread as I think I've decided on a petrol Mazda 6. I like the reasons SLO76 reccomeded this. Only question is, how does the drive and performance of a naturally aspirated petrol compare to say s turbo charged petrols, or turbo diesels as they are all I've driven for near on twenty years? Also much to recommend between the 143 and 163 bhp versions? The latter seems hard to come by Read more

It's the first car I've owned for 24 years that I look back at when I park up.

I feel the same way about my 22 year-old BMW 320d SE Touring. Still looking very nice (imo). All rust (well, more like paint bubbling on the wheel arches) taken care of. At 130k miles, it will do me for another couple of years. Family-owned car (it was my sister's car) with full service history and all receipts since my ownership (Aug 2012). :-)

The major issue occurred before the expiry of 6 months from the date of acquisition.

It may have done but you have to start the rejection process within 6 months of acquisition and its now over 7 months since the OP acquired the car....

So we purchased the new Renault Clio alpine esprit. Within 20 days the car started making a really bad noise that would not go away, I took it to the dealer they supplied me with a Hyundai hire car while they tried to work out what was wrong with it. 1 week later I have been told it need a full new gear box. The gear box is on back order might be 15 days possibly end of march. Because I brought the fault to their attention within the first 30 days. Can I reject the car or does it have to be rejected within 30 days. 7 days of this was the master technician trying to work out what was wrong with the car. I’m led to believe changing a clutch on an automatic hybrid is not an easy task as well. The car no longer feels new to us. A new car is also 4 month back order. Any input or advice would be appreciated. Read more

With Renaults, the PDI isn’t done at the dealership, it’s done at the port of entry (Portbury). The dealer has very little to do. There should be a PDI checklist in the book pack.

Used to be Southampton, didn't realise they'd moved across to Portbury in the intervening years.

Hi I'm on the lookout for another car up to £7.5 max, considering a Ford Focus MK3. Noticed from 2015 the engines are mainly Turbo in 1.5 or 1.0 guise. I was hoping for a 1.6 N/A but can only find a few and they are all auto powershift. Did they phase out the 1.6? I don't want a turbo car, diesel or auto.

Other option is a Fiesta with 1.25 engine there seem to be plenty of those post 2015. Having thought more about it maybe a 5 door Supermini would be better, as we don't really need a Focus sized car, so could go for a newer/lower milage car for same money if I went smaller.... Read more
