Now is traditionally a good time to buy - many people have been spending on Christmas, and others don't like trudging round showrooms in winter weather. If you are not p-x'ing you may be able to make an unrefusable offer ...

If you carry on wavering about how long this car has been for sale, you may miss a 'bargain'. At any rate take it for test drive !

So we purchased the new Renault Clio alpine esprit. Within 20 days the car started making a really bad noise that would not go away, I took it to the dealer they supplied me with a Hyundai hire car while they tried to work out what was wrong with it. 1 week later I have been told it need a full new gear box. The gear box is on back order might be 15 days possibly end of march. Because I brought the fault to their attention within the first 30 days. Can I reject the car or does it have to be rejected within 30 days. 7 days of this was the master technician trying to work out what was wrong with the car. I’m led to believe changing a clutch on an automatic hybrid is not an easy task as well. The car no longer feels new to us. A new car is also 4 month back order. Any input or advice would be appreciated. Read more

With Renaults, the PDI isn’t done at the dealership, it’s done at the port of entry (Portbury). The dealer has very little to do. There should be a PDI checklist in the book pack.

Used to be Southampton, didn't realise they'd moved across to Portbury in the intervening years.

Asking for a friend. He has a budget of up to £7,000, mileage about 5,000 p/a, msostly short journeys. Currtently has a high mileage 2005 Transit Connect that's starting to cost him.

He'd like a newer Connect or Caddy Maxi, prefers this height of van for getting in and out of. Which is likely to be most reliable? He knows there are no guarantees over reliability, he can do basic maintenance himself. I'm out of touch for this era/type of vehicle, so turning to fellow backroomers for advice.... Read more

Thought folks would appreciate an update/outcome. Friend has put a deposit an a 2017 Renault Trafic, 96,000 miles. well cared for, service history and good make tyres. Vendor was selling because he had a new job not requiring a van.

Hello, I've had this intermittent problem with my Vauxhall Crossland X not starting at all. The starter motor has been changed and the ECU has been investigated and found to be fine. I checked the battery and it showed 12.47V. When attempting to turn the engine over, it just makes the door-lights for the windows turn off, and it requires a bump start to get it moving. Once I get the car home, it turns over every time. Really, really annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Read more

That battery voltage appears good , but doesn’t necessarily mean the battery has any capacity for starting . I would have it checked properly with a conductance tester .

A non-interference easy to change cambelt is probably the best all-round solution, not sure why most switched to interference designs. If I recall correctly, with the Lexus LS400, the early version is non interference, whilst the later version of the same engine is interference!

Non-interference engines are simple to design and make if they're 2-valves per cylinder but that's not particularly good for power or emissions - 4-valves per cylinder are much better for power and emissions but difficult to make non-interference.

I'm wanting to have a stab at doing by own basic maintenance oil/fluids etc. I would much prefer to hire workshop space with a lift rather than invest in ramps or stands.

There used to be a place in Oldham called BHA rent a ramp that offered this for about £20 p/h, I believe there was another similar place in Oswestry and Google does report others but they all seem to have closed down or stopped offering this.... Read more

The adjustable ramps are great but quite a lot more money. No risk of going over the top though.

Warning

My neighbours owns a BMW and had his steering wheel stolen.

In the camera footage, they were in the car for 30 seconds. They managed to disable the alarm. Only a single beep from the horn.

The issue here would be more like the car is worth £10,000 with the steering wheel or £9,000 to someone pepared to repair it and sell on. As the replacement parts are not immediately available, the insurance company faces paying for weeks of hire car costs but if they write the car off it only costs them the £1,000 difference in values.

Because I've only recently and unwillingly and accidentally been thrust in to the world of buying two new cars, I've only just noticed how they seem to be sold these days. It seems to me that everything is around the 'infotainment'.

Also, and don't get me wrong, I abhor mobile phone use at the wheel, but I can't see how these large interactive touch screens are any less distracting. We bought a Skoda Scala before Christmas, and as a car I absolutely love it, but this screen is so distracting and you have to 'see' the screen to access the basic controls whereby in an older car you could usually grope around for the buttons to change the radio etc whilst keeping your eyes on the road. I am starting to find the sheer weight of this tech overwhelming (and I am a software engineer by trade), and I'm longing for the basic dashboard and car of twenty years ago. Surely I can't be the only one? Read more

I must admit I like some 'modern' features, I find the reversing camera great, but have never used the self-parking feature, I simply don't trust it, yet I realise that is illogical.

I have an 'iPad' in the centre of the dashboard, but only use the arrows next to the speedo for sat nav directions....

<< Are you sure that it isn't just the "Child Proof Locks" that have been set.? >>

Surely any half-intelligent dealer might have thought of that ? But perhaps the electronics think they have been, or maybe a faulty lock ?...
