So a very unusual situation I encountered today. On my route to work, a set of tempoary traffic lights. Not particuarly unusual in itself, they seem to be everywhere in my area. What was unusual in the length of time that they apepared to be on red. I was in my car for at least six minutes. Nothing. I got out to see ahead of the truck in front of me. With the roadworks, there was some dump truck in the middle of the road which apepared to be dumping gravel or something near the roadworks. I got back in the car, and waited.
Then I began to see cars who hadn't been coming in the other direction to start mounting the pavement to avoid the truck which was in the middle of the road. Meanwhile the truck in front of me and the car in front of that began to move. I assumed the lights had changed. However, I could see they were still on red by the time I passed them, and the truck and car mounted the pavement. I decided i would not do that and would stay where I am.... Read more
Righto, my first impressions on SWMBO’s new secondhand Nissan Leaf are in. I have to say that I’m quite impressed. It drives very well indeed, it grips well, it rides well and it has a fair bit of instantaneous poke about it. I particularly like the “e pedal” which allows you to effectively drive using only one pedal, it works well. The interior is well made and rattle free and it’s spacious and practical with a surprisingly large boot. The heating controls are simple and not buried under menu’s in a touchscreen. It’s quite easy to live with.
I’m not a fan of the styling, but I quite like the interior. It’s a bit dark and the high dash and small windscreen make it feel a little claustrophobic but it’s well built and the heated front seats are comfortable. The rear bench is I find a little flat for adults and you’ll find your legs sitting proud of the cushion, but there’s decent space back there. I’m surprised more people locally don’t taxi them. I certainly would.
As for costs, well she’s done about 500 miles so far and it’s cost absolutely nowt, not a penny. We use the nearby local authority charging points which cost nothing. It’s a wee 15 min walk there and back, but the dogs (two i**** toy poodles) are enjoying the extra walks. We typically charge it every two days. It has the additional bonus of being funded via personal loan by her indoors by herself as I said I wasn’t partaking in her madness. The HRV she had before was a wee belter of a car.
So, am I fully convinced by electric cars? No, not at the stupid prices people are paying for them new. I see new VW ID3’s sitting at our local dealer at well over £30k and that’s just daft. A new big battery Leaf is closing in on £35k according to the local Nissan dealer who tried unsuccessfully to convince me of its value. I do however see the economic argument of what we have here. A good used Nissan Leaf at under £15,000 can make for an excellent commuter car or taxi. It costs buttons to run, the fuel is (currently) free and there’s hardly any moving parts to go wrong.
The only service item listed by Nissan is the brake fluid which should be changed every 3yrs according to the schedule. What they’re asking £150-£300 for when they “service” it I don’t know and I (I know John will appreciated this) won’t be partaking in this either. I’ll maybe let them see it every 3yrs or maybe not at all. I read a recent story in a related forum written by a guy who has never done anything to his 2014 Nissan Leaf other than tyres, brakes and windscreen wipers, the dealer has never been given the opportunity to empty his wallet and it still drives fine and the battery pack is still at 90%.
It’s not for everyone though, I still love a good petrol or diesel engine, I love a slick manual gearbox. I like to drive, not float. But as an economical means to get SWMBO from place to place and to (hopefully) avoid much of the past motoring cost I’ve incurred in looking after her cars it’s far from unpleasant. I will be keeping the old Toyota however and an eye is out for something a bit retro and fun to occupy the garage. If an EV was our sole car I’d say it was too much of an inconvenience when it comes to longer journeys, but as everyday transport to and from work and school (same place as she’s a teacher) it makes a lot of sense.

A painful lesson for you as to the value of gap insurance. If it is of any consolation, even if they had admitted liability, you would be in the same financial situation.

I hit a driver's wing mirror (the driver was going up in the opposite direction) as I was going down a tight hill at around 30MPH and I regrettably didn't stop to wait if the driver would come looking for me to give details.
There was no damage to my wing mirror. Just a small mark and folded half way.... Read more
Sounds like you will be fine mate, the police aren't going to be bothered with this type of thing, the amount of time my van mirror got damaged. By the sounds of it, it seems like you didn't do any damage anyway, so i will say you will be fine.
Hello looking for advice i have a 5 year old skoda karoq. It has full skoda service history. My question is it has done 12500 miles i have had an advisory to change the cam belt given it's low mileage should i do so Read more
Yes possibly but I am glad I had it done. My using the term “reasonable” in my earlier post was a reference to my decision in my particular circumstances. It wasn’t intended to be an endorsement of VAG belts and policies.
Arguably no real choice in your situation, given that your car still has some market value and it going bang would be a significant loss....
Hi all
I am looking to buy an SUV in the UK. I do several 100-mile trips per week, as well as a few shorter trips of 3-15 miles.
I’m keen to have a reliable car, so Honda and Toyota are high up on the list.
As far as I can tell, diesel is still a good choice for motorway travel. Several dealers have told me petrol hybrid is the way to go, but I don’t see how they can maintain their top efficiency for long drives, as the battery surely has to deplete eventually. I am not sure what the petrol+electric mode is called in order to do further research.
The CR-V 1.6L 2WD Diesel is the car I have done the most research into. I was disappointed to discover that recent versions of the Honda CR-V are not available in diesel, and I am concerned about getting a bad DPF if I get a used diesel. I'm also a bit concerned about DPF theft.
I am aware of the CR-V, RAV4, Kodiaq, Sportage, Kuga, CX-5, CX-60, XC40, XC60, XC90. I have test driven several of these and I have no real complaints, aside from poor fuel efficiency on some – particularly new petrol and hybrid CR-Vs.... Read more
Ssangyong have reached the edge of Wales passed a dealership on the way through Cardigan on the way to Cemaes Head for a 10 mile walk on the coast path. Never done this stretch before, spectacular cliffs and rock formations demonstrating how level strata was thrown up by unbelievable forces years ago to almost the vertical and when climate was changing all the time. The wild flowers are at their best this time of year and the butterfly population has no worries here hundreds of them feeding on the flowers and heather. Sammy finished of the walk with a refreshing dip on Poppit sands beach witch is where the walk starts
Bought a Nissan Juke Tekna last August - ex Motability car - 3 years old, full service history. Have had it serviced and MOT at Nissan main dealer in February. Last Thursday, radio blacked out at the beginning of a journey so had to complete with no satnav or radio. Long story short - Nissan main dealer told me this is rare but 'it happens' - only solution to replace the unit. Cost £3000. After I recovered, he suggested going to Halfords for cheaper replacement. Others suggested buying replacement on-ebay which I did on basis it would be better to replace with a Nissan approved radio. Surprise surprise, I get message saying system is locked, contact dealer. If I press reset, everything works, but only briefly. Although I noticed satnav continues on audio even after display goes. Took it to the dealer who services the car and they couldn't have been more unhelpful. Everyone agreed £3000 was a shocking price but they couldn't suggest an alternative. After I insisted, they reluctantly suggested booking car in to let their service team see what they could do at a cost of £268 with no guarantee of success. Any ideas? Read more
Just wondered if you managed to get it fixed ?
Hi,
My 1.4 2005 fiesta is overheating causing bubbling in the coolant tank which then spills out. I have noticed that the fan is definitely not working. I'm planning on changing the fuse under the bonnet next to the battery tomorrow as I've changed the fuse behind the glove box (it seems like there are 2 fuses related to the fan looking online). The thing is the tempature gauge shows normal when the coolant tank is bubbling up and steam coming from it. Shouldn't the tempature gauge show that the engine is overheating if it was this fuse? So I'm wondering if I'm going down the right lines with looking at the fuses? Or is it likely to be something else such as something to do with the thermostat seeing as the tempature gauge remains normal even when it clearly should be showing that the engine is overheating? Thanks for any help. Read more
I thought all thermostats of this year were failsafe? {fail open) ?
What year?...
Hi, I'm looking to buy a Ford Focus Estate. There are 2 I could potentially go for which are very very similar. They are both 1.0t Ecoboost petrols. One is a 2017 Reg, but with 103k miles on the clock (£8k), and the other is 2014 Reg with 60k on the clock (£7.25k). We'll mainly be using it to dry short distances around town. Is it better to go low miles but older, or younger with more miles? Read more
Yeah, we're thinking about getting that done. Not sure where the best place is or if I can't actually do it myself.
Plenty of mobile people online...
Hello,
My car failed it’s MOT and one of the things was on the rear number plate lights. I’ve changed both bulbs that light up the rear numberplate light, however they still don’t work.
Where is the fuse located for these?
My rear brake lights both work and I replaced the outer casing for the rear numberplate lights a couple of years back as they had rusted. There is no rusting and the bulbs are held in well so I’m hoping it’s just a fuse. Thanks can’t find anything in the manual though so aim hopeful Honest John members can help me out as you have been excellent in the past.
I’m in a bit of a race against time with it so a speedy response would be most welcome.
Thank you Read more
So I tried to remove the panel in the trunk on the left side, removed all the bolts. And also the top cover. But there is no movement in the panel when I pull. And there is too much stuff inside, wires, cables, I am afraid I wreck something.
I have removed the rear light, and the plug looks normal, no burned wires....
My partner had a full service 2 weeks ago @ In and Out with spark plug check.
Driving back from Cornwall, engine fault light came on, AA came out and fault was spark plugs not firing properly. AA man checked them and said “you could fit a lorry between them gaps” the gaps on all 3 platinum long life plugs appx min 5mm on all 3 plugs. The AA man cleaned them bent them in to make gap smaller, got us back home to Bristol. Went to In & Out showed him photo of plugs he said they don’t look too bad, they replaced them and charged us £80 but he didn’t show us the new ones to compare the gap which I asked for. Does anyone think we have grounds to complain to head office as it caused us no end of hassle. Had to stop 2 hrs on hard shoulder of motorway and feel like fobbed off my mechanic as obviously they had not checked on the service. Read more
Thank you for the update. Paying for work that garages don't do is all too common in the trade. Good for you to take them up on it and get a result which again does not happen that often.
Had a stuck on red situation yesterday with a temporary pelican crossing,
Despite people on the pavement letting people know one driver in the opposite lane stopped and used it as an opportunity to use her mobile. I stopped and it took a few horn blasts before she wound down the window and I told her if she wasn't on the phone she may hear and see people telling her the lights were stuck on red....
