People face ‘outrageous’ £100 fines for parking on their own street (msn.com)
This is the second instance of councils restricting car owners I have read in two days. In Cardiff a series of residential roads controlled by ANPR cameras that fines drivers not registered to these roads to avoid the free movement of others who my be short cutting or parking.. You may have a perfectly legitimate reason to visit the area a relative, friend ebay purchase or whatever. Have you got a permit?? how on earth do they work these things and WHY? This may be or is happening all over the place. This is just another seemingly injustice on the motorist.. Have our councils got nothing better to do with their time and our money dreaming up these schemes and what good are they doing in the grand scheme of things. Read more
It's time to change the cambelt and water pump, so obviously some/most of the antifreeze will also go. Currently it has factory yellow/straw coloured stuff. I figured it would be easier to get new from the dealer, as I can't find the specification easily.
The dealer said the new stuff is red, and it replaces the yellow, but should be flushed. He didn't know the spec, and it wasn't on the bottle. I'm trying to make life easy for myself and just put back in the same as original. ... Read more
Dont think mine was.
Pretty sure it was rust, because it looked like rust, and it smelled like rust, and it settled out like rust....
Hello all. I have a question about my car. It’s a Z16XER engine. It has a VVT system and when I first start the engine it has a knocking noise for 1 or 2 seconds and then goes. After this the engine runs fine. It only does it when the car has sat for hours without use. I’ve had lots of work done to the car recently. New camshaft dephasers, solenoid valves , aux belt, timing belt, and many other things. I’m told that there is an oil non return valve that allows a bit of oil to stay near the top of the engine to send it directly into the VVT system on start up. But if this valve stops working, the oil drains right back down to the sump and the noise happens because of the time it takes for the oil to shoot back up to the VVT system. I was wondering if this theory is correct? If so how much of a job is it to change the non return valve? Has anyone experienced this before? It’s only started doing this over the past two months.
Thanks in advance Read more
There was a fix by Vauxhall. They recommended removing the filters from the VVT solenoids.
It seemed tp work on mine
Hi, would like advice on behalf of a relative looking for a replacement for his 2012 Toyota Yaris SR (99bhp). Change in job soon, means will be commuting further than usual and driving around 12-15k miles pa, mostly M and A roads.
Criteria, in no particular order:... Read more
36mpg from a 1.3 Yaris is crazy, he must be absolutely thrashing the car all the time (or the brakes are binding)!.
Should get 50mpg from one of those with little effort....

Never noticed size difference in belts, but once changed a clutch cable on a Renault 21, someone had previously fitted one presumably bought from an accessory shop which was about half the diameter cable of the OE, wasn't much heavier duty than a bicycle brake cable and about as much use.

‘ 1. Mostly urban dwellers, perhaps who don't have home or regular access to a (fast) charger, but who would use the EV mode as much as they could on short(er) trips;’ PHEV’s tend only to have a 3.6kW onboard charger (unless a 7kW charger has been specified as an option), so plugging them into anything other than a 3 pin plug is fairly pointless.
Perhaps, but most workplaced won't have an accessible charging point or (mostly for health and safety reasons) no access to just a standard three pin 230V socket to charge it. Most don't even have enough parking spaces for 1/3 of their staff.
That means a potential PHEV owner has to be able to have a car with sufficient EV range to get to work and back under any driving conditions as well as needing to fully recharge it every day at home. Works for some, but for many, it won't, because they don't have a driveway / garage....
50% more than a petrol model, looks like a car from the front instead of those bland panels where the radiator went. Can never see this E holding on to a decent second hand value and as for running costs how do you claw back the difference in the purchase price. Read more

I have 2 kids under 12 who I regularly cart around, I previously had a very old Yaris which in actual fact drove superb for a 2002 model. I then brought a Kia Picanto, which is nice and compact for urban driving, but harsh on the plentiful bumps. I'd like a more stylish car now, but would still like the quality, efficiency and reliability factors to be high on the list.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts, it's been interesting to read, and I now know which car make I will NOT be looking at. Lots of you asked budget, I was looking at £10-15k, I'll check out the Yaris and Suzuki Swifts. Thank you very much

I need access from my drive 24/7 but am constantly having someone park their vehicle over my driveway which means I cannot get my car out.
As there are no pavements eitherside of my drive, this means I can't have a dropped kerb installed as the drive is at the same level with the road. All the information I've found is there is only an obstruction if there is a dropped kerb. Unless the council suddenly decide to put in a pavement, then it's impossible to install one.
What rights do I have under these circumstances? Read more
No rights, other than report for obstruction if you have a driveway which was authorised.
“Keep Clear” road markings don’t need a traffic regulation order. Offer to pay the Council to have some painted.
