I was reading an article on the NHS as to what might seem acceptable terminology in todays world when I came across the above. At first I thought it might be some new infection or disease that had been found. It turns out that it is NHS speak to describe most of us as being cisgender i.e. identifying as the sex we were registered at birth and therefore heterosexual so if you are referred to as the above shout loudly if you disagree! No wonder you might need a degree in the modern NHS. Read more

If you are not affected by it then why do you object to it?

You are not airbrushing history - you don't backdate your change of gender from when you are born to when you change....

I was at the end of my street indicating to turn left. I looked left and further down the road was a car coming up, I looked right and there were no cars coming down - so I’ve gone to pull out and turn left but as I’ve set off the car coming up is suddenly right in front of my car, on my side of the road! So I broke, and she got out of her car to say I needed to read the Highway Code, she was apparently overtaking some parked cars that were further up ahead. My argument was that she was on my side of the road and she shouldn’t have moved over to my side of the road so early, as the parked cars were further up. If I usually drive up that road I drive up to the parked cars and then around if clear. I would never move into the wrong lane so far ahead of the parked cars. So apparently it was my fault, even though I looked both ways - when I looked her way she was in the correct lane and a distance back - I wasn’t to know she would suddenly move over into my lane. When I looked both times it was clear for me to go, until she moved into my lane.
Just to prove my point even more, after she left, a small van came up, never once did he move on to the wrong side of the road, he drove up to the parked cars and then went around.
Just want to know peoples opinions as I believe I wasn’t at fault, but she was so adamant the blame was on me. Read more

Bolt 2 (In tightening sequence, position B3) doesnt gain any torque between the penultimate and final tightening, which seems odd, but happened last time. so it also seems consistent.

I'd guess this is due to the turning of bolt 1 unloading it.

Hi. I'm looking to buy a car on behalf of a friend. She doesn't have much car knowledge or interest, so I am looking at Japanese cars which tend to be more reliable. She has a small family, and wants to spend between £2,000 and £3,000, and for it to be petrol and manual. The offerings in the small sized (Jazz) and medium sized (Civic) classes would be best I think. Given that her budget isn't very big, I also think that a chain driven engine would be best, rather than risking it on a cambelt-driven car with no history on the belt ever being changed. I would really appreciate your thoughts on the small and medium sized offerings from these manufacturers, but even more helpful would be if you could tell me which cars and which engines from these manufacturers use a chain. Her budget would seemingly afford her a car between 10 and 20 years old. Many thanks in advance, Alfie. Read more

Good morning again, I have a 1992 MR2 that I have owned from new. As was common in those days, it is fitted with a Vecta immobiliser. The car was stored carefully for a number of years, as the children grew up, with the engine run to temperature at least monthly. We (my trusted local garage actually) have just completed a recommissioning, with all fluids changed, new plugs, HT leads, coil, distributor cap, etc. The fuel pump has also been replaced and tank flushed out. All was well until it has suddenly started cutting out and the engine stops slowly (in other words as though a fuelling problem rather than electrical). The garage has tested everything and, although the Vecta wiring appears intact, they now suspect this is the cause. My mechanics know I seek advice here and have asked me to see if anyone has first hand experience of the Vecta and whether this could be the cause? (I was thinking of you doc!) Thank you in advance. especially when the evidence to support my arguments is strong and staring you in the face as you go about your life.

What's also noticeable is how a good number of people are more than reluctant to change their view when presented with evidence, partly because it often debunks whole swathes of their previous and current worldview, but also because accepting such a major set of view was not right or at least hasn't been for some time and needing changing is difficult as you get older, where change doesn't come so easy....
