Now that my A3 1.9TDI MY2000 (distributor type fuel injection) is nearing 250K, I'm thinking about what to get next. From what I've read, the following is the situation on reliability with the various VAG 1.9/2.0TDI diesels (please correct me where I'm wrong!):

1.9TDI PD 105bhp - Bosch injectors - this engine is the best of the lot, bombproof and the only issues were cracked injector looms.... Read more

I feel able to contributhere having owned the lions share of the VaG engines mentioned. Had an A4 with the 1.9 AWX engine, it was sublime, took any amount of thrashing and always did late 40's mpg - bit smokey thoughh.

Had a Passat 2003 with the 105BHP engine this was trouble free but a bit puny - also I believe the engine internals of this engine are not as meaty as in the AWX engine....

Hi, wonder if I can get some help.

The car is startiing badly, although cranking speed is excellent.

Over recent months, the glow plug indicator light has only been staying on for a very brief period of time and now it's not coming on at all.

It's now taking quite some time to start, and when it does, is quite smoky for a few seconds. I think the glow plugs are not heating up. I also had a fault cleared a few months ago that indicated "incorrect glow plug timing".

Can anyone help me with this ? Maybe the glow plug relay ?

Many thanks......ebt Read more

Hi all

Just bought a lovely 1.8tdci focus estate. It's got FFSH but in the words or the garage where it's been service over the years has had "s*** loads done to it but no timing belt"... Read more

I can't understand why people have paid £200-300 for a timing belt change. I've had it done twice on a focus (tdci and 1.8, both mk1) - each time costing £150. The kit consists of a rubber/plastic belt and the tensioner - a small metal unit. Both times done at independent garages.

The kit costs £70 and should take no longer than an hour for a garage mechanic to fit, so £80 labour which is about right. I did ring a main dealer for a price and was quoted £300-350 which is just a total rip off.

hi everyone

,an update on my 06 movano that keeps cutting out ,i have had two new injectors fitted at a cost of 400 pound ,which was cheap ,i drove the van 80 miles drove great no problems thought thats cured it as i had 2 injectors sucking too much fuel on the test i had done ,i went another 60 miles and would you believe it cut out again turned the ignition off then on as im driving, and it carried on as if it hadnt cut out .i have spent a lot of money on it ,and i still have not found out what is causing it to cut out , its very frustating, no one seems to know ,but i have read a lot of forums and it seems a very common fault on the movanos .any ideas what i can try next..your help will be great.

Money is really tight in the last two years after two redundancies and much lower pay in the current position.

I am in desperate need of some advice!! This post will not be technically correct, as I know absolutely NOTHING about cars!!

2 weeks ago i purchased a used 2008 Vauxhall Corsa 1.3TDCI Ecoflex from a Vauxhall dealer... The whole experience has been a nightmare, but my main issue is surrounding the 1 month warranty. Also, as a point of note, the deal was done on the basis that the vehicle had a MAJOR service before I collected it.... Read more

Hi, I am having the same issues but not as serious as yours. Even main dealers with sound reputations will try to fob you off with meaningless garbage just to make you go away. They know the law perfectly well and are just protecting their profits, end of story. Your next route is recorded delivery letter to the "dealer principal" outlining every aspect of your sorry tale.

Like yourself I've done many of them, but for someone who hasn't they could walk right into a hornets nest. And this forum as far as I'm concerned is about offering help to people who don't know or understand.

No DIYer should be attempting this sort of work without a manual, too many pitfalls on modern engines. But with a bit of common sense and a manual nothing is impossible, time consuming the first time for definite but it can be very fulfilling....

A friend of mine has a 54 reg Mistibishi pickup which has an error code showing for the waste gate (sensor). He noticed this first with a lack of power, when under full load either going full chat up a hill or pulling a trailer with a mini-digger.

So it would seem something is causing the waste-gate to dump the gas - where does the 'signal' come from on these (intake pressure, fuel pump), before taking it to the dealer is there anything a competent DIY'er can do to repair or confirm the diagnosis further on this? Read more

I have the same problem on my 2009 KIA picanto 1.1 G4HG engine. Car was slugish when pulling away with poor throttle response, acceleration and lack of power. Also poor fuel economy. Initialy I found that the crankshaft pulley was worn as well as the crankshaft itself and the sprocket was also worn on the rear resulting in it coming into contact with the casing and the alternator belt pulley wearing into the cam cover and the crank sensor wheel wearing into the sensor surface. Wondered if Andy still worked for Hartwell Motor Services in Birmingham which the phone number provided is linked to. I have ordered a replacement sprocket but think it will need the crankshaft shimming or welded to add material where it has worn.
