My 4 year old Citroen C4 2 litre tiptronix has been fine until fairly recently...Over the past 3 months it has been going into 3rd gear of its own accord. After the first time of this happening we went straight to the local Citroen garage who downloaded the electronic memory etc,but could find nothing wrong!...I have found that I can temporarily clear the problem by stopping, switching off and then starting again, driving forward and reverse by manually selecting the gears...A further thorough overhaul by the garage still resulted in no fault showing up!..The fault has now occured 8 times!!..Any ideas as to what the cause may be or any advice at all would be greatly appreciated!!!!! I have a similar problem with a 1.6 litre C4. When the car is driven off for the first time each day, inside 2km, if the speed exceeds 80Km per hour the auto gearbox drops from fourth to third with a very disconcerting jolt. Service advisory appears. Come to a halt. Switch off the engine. Start again immediately. Problem disappears.

Does anyone have a similar experience? Is there a remedy?...

Approximately 9 months ago the engine of my 2007 Mini Cooper S started making a rattling noise on start up. I took the car to a Mini service garage who informed me that there was no oil in the car, however the oil warning light had not come on. I have regularly checked the oil since then and the car has now used approximately 8 litres of oil, inlcuding an oil change at it's last service with Mini since last summer. The last service was in February and the problem was again reported. The garage suspected a fault with the chain tensioner and this was replaced and put the warning light problem down to condensation in the control panel. Within a month the car was completely out of oil again. This was only noticed when the car began to judder while being driven. Again the oil warning light did not come on.

The problem has not been idetified correctly by Mini and I am concerned that there may be a significant fault with the engine. Is anybody aware of any similar problems with this model or perhaps could suggest what the problem may be? Read more

Problem sorted, managed to talk the Mrs into selling the POS & replaced it with a bulletproof MX5. Result!!

Wondered if anyone might know what's up with my Laguna heater. Sometimes it works fine - I have it at about 22 and it keeps the temperature lovely. More often than not though, it will only blow out cold air unless it's on the maximum setting - 26. It's infuriating - all I can do really is leave it on 26 and then give it a blast every so often to warm the car up and then turn it back off again. Anyone know what might cause this? Also sometimes one side blows cold and the other blows warm. Would be most grateful for any assistance.

You need to check the appropriate handbook for the fuse sizes including the fuse for the heater blower. Also check that charging is correct. You should get ~ 14.4 volts across the battery terminals when charging is taking place. Is the starter motor faulty in some way? .

Ullo all,

I've been googling around but have failed to find a decent answer - just trying to get a general idea of what the typical fuel tank capacity for an average British / European car is. I know that's not very specific, but I'm not after specifics, just generalities. Sorry I'm not too clued up about matters motoring, but this is a genuine question - thanks for any responses. For something like a medium sized car such as a Focus or Astra it would be about 50L. Something larger ie Mondeo or Vectra say 70L.

Hi all

Anybody know what this firm does with all the cars it buys? Read more

We buy any car are a con, they charge and admin fee and look for anything possible to get the price down, they even told a colleague that his drive shaft was rusty so they would need to reduce the offer by £300 on a mint condition 6 month old golf!

They purchased the car buying service who didn't charge a admin fee, did an immediate bank transfer not waiting 5 days like WBAC and didn't look for non existent faults.

Personally I would avoid them like the plague.

Worth checking out we want any car, Perrys , Evans halshaw and other main franchises who now happily pay trade for good used cars.

I know what the received wisdom is, but please just humour me for a sec.

I know that this doesn't seem to be a popular idea, but I'm just wondering why not.... Read more

Hmmm.

See it now sounds as if my idea is nothing more than an extension of what a lot of you are doing already.

I've got the whole spring, summer and some of the autumn to work this one out. I would take it that an insurer wouldn't try to back out of a claim on the grounds that a car had four mismatched budget tyres, so it would be an odd one if they would worm out of two sets of slightly different decent tyres with plenty of grip.

Here's an interesting one that I'd like some views on if possible.

First thing in morning, all works well when switching on the ignition. All lights come on, as they should and all go out after pre-check.... Read more

Hi,

I just wanted to know if you every got to the bottom of this? I'm thinking of buying a Vauxhall Astra MkV 1.7 CDTI that's had the sensor light reset but keeps coming back and stays on. They're saying that theres no loss in performance....

I've just bought a 2002 Seat Leon TDI SE 110 and while it performed well during a test drive (around town and on a 50mph dual carriageway) I have discovered it lacks power at higher speeds. It pulls quite nicely up to about 60mph but then suddenly goes flat and doesn't want to go any further with my foot flat to the floor. I've also experienced the same lack of power/acceleration when overtaking and going up hills. This is my first TDI so I'm not really sure what to expect but this just doesn't seem right.

Also, my sister has an Audi A3 TDI that has a distinctive turbo whistle/whine but this is not noticeable on the Leon, should it be?... Read more

Over the many years I had my previous TDi (a 90bhp 1.9), I had two separate loss of power issues; the first was due to the air hose partly coming loose, causing a loss of power, but particularly at higher revs.I do remember having a similar problem to you, struggling to maintain speed on the motorway. This cost nothing to fix as it was just one of the jubilee type spring clips that had come adrift.

Years later, I had another loss of power which took ages to diagnose, but was tracked down to a blocked oxidation catalyst, which was replaced....

Turbo failure on the 1.6 PSA engine on the fords had become quite an issue and there are many technical bullitens suggesting various replacement pipes and removal of the sump etc to clean pick up etc.

The cause of all the excess carbon in the sump causing the blocked oil ways is most likley an injector seal leaking in the cylinder head ! this then blows the carbon into the rocker cover plus it creates excess heat and bakes the oil around the injector casuing the blockages in the sump and oil feed pipes.... Do they have the same setup as the X type or Modeos with the electronic turbo actuator ?

I have a recently purchased a 2003 Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi, when starting from cold there's a cloud of white/grey smoke from the exhaust, also when reving the engine after a period of idling there is a cloud the same colour, the longer the idle period the bigger the cloud. Also the fuel economy is poor, I'm only getting 30-35 MPG.

The Ford dealer has inspected the injectors, changed the leak off pipes and injector seals and changed the oil and filter.... Read more

Strange as you did say in your first post it had been run with the turbo disconnected !

I trust it has the right dip stick in it ? They are prone to snapping on this model and often get replaced with ones from breakers yards! I have seen wrong dip sticks fitted causing excess smoke. best to drain the oil and add measured amount then see what the dip stick reads.I can remeber having a Renault Fuego in for bad smoking and that had the wrong stick and smoething like 2/3 pints of oil too much !
