Hi all my problem is my 2004 vauxhall combo diesel van its done 111.000miles and will start fine first thing in the morning but when its been running and got warm it will not start untill after about an hour and half then it will start after a few turns. I took it to a mechanic a few weeks ago( if he realy was) he had it for over two weeks(i know pi** taker) i was fuming he then phone me and said the problem was inside the engine and it will be cheaper to put a new engine in because he thinks its the rings. it does not smoke when its running at tickover and drive fine when its running and does not cut out. this is what he said he had done.(if he did)

Took the injectors off - he said these where ok... Read more

Hi All, bit of ignorance here on my part but there is road near me that has a 7.5T weight restriction on it and some quite large stuff uses it. I have to admit that haven't got a clue what 7.T looks like.

Also I thought that the limit applies to the max laden weight of the vehicle and that even if unladen the restriction still applies. Is that right?... Read more

Just had a new Volvo S60 D3 (the 2 litre 5-pot diesel) on a 24-hour test drive, did around 150 miles of motorway, town and A-road driving.

The good: usual Volvo superb front seats (cloth), adjustable every which way. Nice even weighting on all controls, especially steering which has a lovely fluid feel without being overlight.

Excellent suspension control, ride and road noise suppression on standard 17" alloys and 50-profile tyres. It flows nicely over broken, bumpy surfaces without crashing or jarring. As good as my current Mondeo in this respect.

Handling is tidy and safe, it goes where you point it without understeer affecting the line.

The D3 engine (single turbo, 161bhp and 300ft-lb) is utterly fantastic. SO effortless, even the slightest flex of your ankle has the car leaping forward.

Some road tests have criticised it for having a narrow torque band ... all I can say is, the one I tested didn't. It pulled HARD and revved swiftly from just over 1500rpm to 4,000+ without tailing off in 3rd, giving awesome overtaking punch in the middle ratios. 6th gear is 39mph / 1000 rpm so it lopes along motorways easily yet still picks up and flies without needing a downchange.

Fuel consumption according to the on-board computer over 150 mixed miles is 49mpg ... even if it's 20% optimistic, that's around 40mpg which, given the performance available, is pretty good.

Dislikes: electronic parking brake (I suppose you get used to them) and no clutch footrest, which is an oversight in my opinion.

Overall: that's my next company car sorted, then. Read more

Delighted to have picked up a pretty good condition mk3 fiesta for £350 on ebay. I was the only person to see the car, not a great deal of interest because it's 1993.

Only 60k miles, pretty sure that's genuine as the last half dozen MOTs tally.... Read more

The radio on my 406 is as good as useless, it seems to have very little gain, in some places it picks up no stations at all and in others one or two, just occaisionally in a city it will recieve several. I have checked the aerial connection which appears OK. It makes no difference whether you tune it in the local or DX mode so I suspect a fault on the radio, unless anyone knows different?

Thanks. Peter Read more

Thanks Derek for the quick reply.....can`t faualt the car in anyway, but when you buy a car its the only thing that you find out after checking all the relevant stuff, it will hold a channel or a CD for a certain length of time.....then it will go through FM channels as if its lost summat.....I`ll try the TP thing and let you know, but i dont get a traffic report anyway, it has got the steering mounted control, it works but would`nt know if it had any faults Tony!

Hi,

My 2003 petrol fiesta NON ABS model has a problem where the speedometer flicks between the actual speed and the far end of the guage e.g. at 70 MPH it will constantly flick all over between 70 and 140 mph! This also effects the auto volume on the radio. I'm hoping its a just sensor that needs cleaning, any ideas?... Read more

Don't worry - it's called 'thread drift' and it happens on forums just as it happens in real conversations. By all means resurrect the original question if you like.

But I'm still surprised that all modern coaches aren't autiomatics.

I've got a 2003 Citroen Berlingo Multispace 2 litre HDi. Quite a few years ago Citroen recalled the Berlingos because there was a problem with the front suspension springs and they wanted to fit some "cups" to prevent fractured springs from "piercing" the front tyres. Now my left spring is fractured, I'm abroad at the moment and facing a 400 Euro bill to replace both front springs. My question is, my husband said that Citroen obviously knew there was a problem with the springs so he thinks Citroen should have replaced the springs in the first place and not just fitted cups underneath. Has anybody tried claiming money back from Citroen that was spent on having new springs fitted? What are my chances? I have looked through this web site and know that there is a general problem with front suspension springs in European cars. Read more

In 2003/4, a number of berlingo accidents which caused loss of life in france were investigated by the french authorities, they found the accidents were caused by a broken front spring bottom coil which protruded out slicing into the inside of the tyre which instantly peeled the tyre from the wheel causing a number of fatal crashes, in one crash a whole family with children were killed. as usual with car companies trying to avoid massive recall costs...Citroen were hoping to keep quiet about it all until they were rumbled and threatened with court action by the french Govt. Citroen responded with the 2 following announcment...1...Any front spring that breaks on a berlingo up to a certain age (4 years old) will be replaced free of charge at a main dealer. 2 A split cup will be fitted to the bottom of the front spring on all berlingos as a free recall...I bought my berlingo (02) in 2004, both front springs broke but I didnt know about the free spring change and got a local garage to fit a new pair for £200, the cup mod was carried out in 2006. The cup mod is a cop out, it pays mere lip service to the real problem and covers Citroens ass if sued in court . When I got my car back I checked the new springs, and found one was not seated correctly on the strut seat...and the other was fitted upside down which makes the car dangerous to drive, I found out later that the garage was using semi-skilled labour during busy periods for "Chassis work". to check yours, look for the white lettering declaring "TOP" on the spring and make sure its at the top and not upside down on the bottom of the spring like mine. My new springs have been on now for 4 years trouble free. Citroen should have recalled for new springs, it only takes 30 mins to change one, and it would have shown they care, if the bottom coil breaks on your car now, you wont be able to see it because of the cup. BUT..the cup will stop it from slicing into your tyre, thats shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted...... still a good car tho...never rust.

my advice is to get your oil and filter changed every 7-8k on a BMW to ensure complete peace of mind and ensure the longevity of the turbo, you get a cheap oil change done at say Kwik FIt for 50 quid and they use top spec oil. Too many BMW's blow thier turbos due to the stupidity of so called long life servicing. Also get swirl falps checked on diesal BMW's again another design fault, and change the auto box oil as well.
