This is an intermittent fault.
Sometimes, at start up, the engine management light flashes, stays on ,and the display reads "anti polution fault"
This has been going on for many months now, and SEEMS to appear / go away when the under-bonnet area is disturbed (after a servive for example).
Seeing as it's intermittent, my electronics design / servicing background tells me plug/skt. connections, cable breaks (usually directly into plugs & sockets) if not an intermittent component.
Due to another intermittent fault this week (why Chritmas hols. when all garages are closed?) which suddenly appeared after a service - sudden engine cut-out as if the tap had just turned off, no warning, no engine management light or display explanation, and which the garages SOLUS Diagnostice could only offer a vague guess at the "whole fuel system" (via. code P1112 or P112, I think) - oh, switching off and re-starting the engine cured the problem untill the next time - I went around all of the yellow/grey/red plug/skt. pairs under the bonnet, cleaned/'lubed and reseated them - and this seems to have sorted it out.
The two problems ("anti polution fault" and intermittent cut-out) are unrelated, in terms of when they occur, anyway.
Is there a common intermittent fault on these cars that causes the "anti polution fault" message to appear at start up, and then vanish and be OK for a few days etc.??
Any suggestions (plug/skt/component specific) would be welcome.
Thanks.

I have a 2004 Ford Focus and am finding that I need to be up really close to the car for the remote central locking to operate via the keyfob. I've had a few Fords before but never had to change the keyfob battery - is it straightforward? Also I am hoping that no re-programming is required. I would have checked if this procedure is in the handbook but I didn't get one when I bought the car.

Thanks so much for this very sound advice. All done in a few minutes!
As is common with new cars these days there is precious little space in the engine bay to get your hand in to change a light bulb.
Does anyone know how the main bulb on the front of a Renault Modus can be changed without resorting to a trip to the dealers? (££££).
I read on a another forum that the front bumper might have to come off to get the required access? More than happy to do the work myself just wanted to know what the procedure was.
Driver's side bulb if it makes a difference.
Thanks in anticipation. Read more
Hi,
I followed the excellent instructions on this thread for changing the dipped beam bulb on my Modus. Got the old bulb out and new one in but I do not know how to insert it properly back into the original position. I fiddled and tried for ages but gave up. The bulb and its casing are sitting pretty nicely and the light works, however, it is not inserted and secured properly in the housing. How on earth do I do it? Many thanks for any help....
Hello All,
Could any body please confirm wether a 2002 Ford Mondeo 1.8 Zetec has a timing belt or a timing chain? In addition, could anyone please confirm at what mileage intervals it should be changed (if it is belt driven) and also the approximate cost for a job of this type at either a Ford main dealer or smaller independant garage?
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks.

Cool, you learn something every day. I've always known it as the Pinto.
The 1.3 Pinto/T88 was sold in the UK in the early Sierra. It was not a nice combination.

Forgive my ignorance but I'm sure I have read here or in HJ's column that when the wife's 1.8 Astra has its upcoming timing belt change (at 40 000 miles) it is advisable to also change the water pump at the same time. Could someone tell me why that is and is it going to cost me a shedful of cash? Read more
Thanks very much gentlemen. I would have had the water pump done anyway because of what I remember reading but am sure as damn it will do after your advice. The car's been faultless so far so I'm sure it will all pay off in the long term.
There was an article on the news last night about the current weather conditions and saying how the roads will be really busy 'cos of the problems at airports etc. Yes that old chestnut. They interviewed a guy from the RAC and he said '...make sure you fill your, er, windscreen washer bottle with, er, antifreeze...'. Of course what he meant was screenwash! Not a good idea to spray antifreeze over your shiny paintwork... Read more
Too many people confuse the chemicals involved, anything with Ethylene Glycol in it (including anti-freeze) should not be put in with/in place of screenwash it will damage paint and laquer.
People confuse Ethylene Glycol with Monopropyl Glycol which is what they de-ice aircraft with (amongst other things) and is totally safe to use in screen wash, many brands of screenwash have Monopropyl Glycol and have had unjust comments as a result of the mis-informed.
I have a Movano van that intermittently looses power and stalls (twice in 140 mile trip). It seems the fuel seems to stop.
Garage have already charged £200 for replacing a fuel sensor but no improvement and now want it back to send it to a diesel expert??
Has anybody any knowledge of this problem or advice as to how to handle a garage who carry out work that has no positive results? Do I have to pay them for all the work?
Thank you

hi i had the same problem on my 2.5 diesel movano it kept cutting out under load switch the key, off then on, away we go again without even stopping, did my head in, id already had the fuel tank cleaned they said dirt in the fuel ,i had the injectors tested they said 2 had failed had them changed , still had the problem after spending lots of money ..... .. right someone recommended moreys at bridport, diesel specialist, a very pleasant knowledgeable man ,he said it was either injectors or pressure regulating valve on the fuel pump ..he checked the injectors as id only had 2 replaced not long ago i was hoping they were ok, they were fine , and he traced it to the regulating valve on the fuel pump he replaced the valve on the fuel pump, and a bill of 240 pound later and yes its fixed at long last ..so take it to a diesel specialist they know what they are doing not like vauxhall or renault dealers hope this helps someone in the same predicament as i was in
Daughter's 1.416v Lupo: apparantly a few days ago the EPC warning light (" Engine Management System" in the manual) lit up but went away when the engine restarted. Nothing seemed to be amiss.
A couple of days later, the engine symbol lit up (" Exhaust Emission warning lamp"); the engine is now missing on a cylinder. It has only been driven a couple of miles like that.
I have put new leads on the car, and have also tried changing the coil pack with one that was known to be ok (from our other 1.0 Lupo - same coil pack on both engines), but the problem persists.
I've not yet checked the plugs (tools and car in different places) but as they were changed at the last service (Bosch) and are only 2000 miles old, they shouldn't be the problem.
Any other ideas I could easily check, before I have to take it to a
garage?

OK! Car has had the exchange VW head fitted and is running smoothly again now. I saw the old head before it was sent back, but couldn't see the offending seat as the spring was still on it. Garage and I are relieved - it's cost both of us time and money!
Happy New Year to all!

I've just had a notice that claims to come from the Municipal Police of the Comune di Pisa.
It says (in excellent English) that I circulated in a restricted traffic zone in Pisa on a date in early June and says I need to pay a fine of 99.4 Euro. The only payment method it lists is bank transfer.
I WAS in Pisa at the time and date in question. I wasn't aware of driving anywhere prohibited, but may have done so in error. My questions are:
Scam or genuine? (It's printed on plain copying paper)
Any risk if I pay by bank transfer?
Why has it taken 5 months and do I therefore have a getout?
Thanks
Peter
PS It came a week after a £50 for sitting in a box junction so I'm feeling a bit miffed! Read more
Thanks for the response. The letter was signed for by the postman, my signature is not on the Royal Mail confirmation. What rights do they have to pursue this further given that I did not sign for the original Pisa letter?
Thanks again for your input.
Hi all !
I'm having problems with my opel astra f automatic gearbox Aisin AW6040LE AF13.
In the morning at the first start of the car the Sport Mode light flashes and the gearbox goes in limp mode.
I can drive the car manually shifting. After 10-15 minutes if I stop and then start again the car, the gearbox will ran fine the rest of the day. I have changed the oil but no luck.
Any suggestions ? Read more
Diagnosed the gearbox with 3 tools ( dealers tech2, opelscanner, opcom)
All three idicated the same fault:
56 Selector switch, wrong signal.
Now I'll have to strip down the selector, clean it, realign it and put it back.
I hope that this will solve the problem.
Thanks!
BTW: The ECU of this tranny stores the fault codes :)
