I have just witnessed road pricing in action in Austria on a coach holiday. As we passed the 'box' on the roadside it read the signalling device on the coach and debited the account held by the company. If the account is out of credit the law is onto you in a flash...fines imposed etc. should you get across the border sharpish to avoid the payments your details are kept ad naseum on computer and the moment you re-enter you are collared. This technology seems to work fine...frightening if you ask me. Read more

Can anyone confirm that www.gr8cardeal.co.uk has gone into receivership? I was told this by another internet broker.

I managed to get to their web site and send an enquiry. I received an automated response saying they would be in touch. I'm surprised the web site hasn't been pulled. Read more

Yep, they've gone bust.

I was in the middle of getting a car from them and am still trying to get my money back, But as alerady mentioned they are not registerd as in liquidation at companies house, so I cant find out who the liquidator is!!!!!!!

I know that the etiquette of car wash queues are much more interesting but this is an interesting question with a bit more meat on the bones.

For what it's worth I don't think I would sue if I was him, I find it too morally dubious. Motoring is a risky endeavour and bad things happen.

Please could any bright spark enlighten me as to the additions included with the Classic SE package to the previous generation A Class.
I believe standard Air Con was one thing, however would be keen to know anything else above the regualr Classic package.
Thinking of picking up a LWB version (Cargiant have plenty of examples)

Many thanks. Read more

I am as big a Merc fan as anyone - I've spent years working on them (from the late 1970's) and owned loads. I've even done the factory tour and visited the museum.
The fact is though, that the A-class is a pig of a car. Poor adaption to RHD and the engine has to be dropped to loads of simple tasks - even changing the alternator drive belt is a long-winded job. Starter motors can fail and they are on the top of the engine - so the engine has to be dropped for that job!
Add to that parts which wear out prematurely (Air-con compressor, suspension, steering parts etc etc) and it really is not a good buy by any means. Unfortunately its not particularly nice to drive either. This is not 'bashing' this is fact.
I can only assume that A-class used values are kept afloat by middle-class types who don't know much about cars but like the idea of an MB badge on the drive.

Due to a busy new year, sorry for not getting back to you earlier.

This problem was resolved by fitting 4 new NGK spark plugs, fired up first time. Top stuff

Hi can anybody recommend a suitable Sat Nav system that I can use in my wife's Toyota Yaris? It seems a real minefield in the market with so many different models and several competing manufacturers. I appreciate that the prices range from below £100 to nearly £1000 and I wonder what you get for your money and do they do what is says on the tin?

Many thanks

Icefox.

One of my neighbours regularly runs his cars with no front numberplate. At first I thought it had just dropped off but then noticed that other cars he drives also have missing front plates. I've never asked him but the only thing I can think of is that he removes them to prevent being caught on camera from the front. If stopped he could argue that he didn't know it had 'dropped off' and presumably be charged with a lesser offence or even charm the plod into letting him off. Obviously he couldn't use this story if he removed front and rear plates. Also for him to be noticed by a patrol car, the plods would have to be driving in the opposite direction and by the time they turned round he would be gone.
How serious an offence is he committing? Read more

>>want less scameras and more traffic police and enforcement of the more than enough laws already in place

Its spelt "camera", no leading "S". HTH clear up your confusion. Or is that one of those "trendy" nicknames ?

1) More traffic police ? Excellent.
2) Enforcement of existing laws ? Excellent.

Less cameras ? Why ? Surely that would fail your desire for 2) ??

SWMBO is using her sister's Golf GT TDI PD (115 bhp) 6-speed manual at the moment, and has rather fallen in love with it. I don't get it personally (nice interior and engine, but the rest is forgettable), and SWMBO's sister is thinking of selling it early next year. I am considering making her an offer for it when the time comes, just to shut SWMBO up. In fairness, I am considering replacing SWMBO's Fiesta with something a little bigger anyway, as DP jr number 2 arrives in Feb, and the Fester is going to struggle size-wise.

I've seen some ridiculous prices asked for mk4 Golf diesels, yet Parkers suggests £5860 in private sale with 60k (this has done 69k). Auto Trader puts them much higher, with some of these advertised for more than this with 100k on the clock. VW dealers still seem to want the wrong side of £7k for any 6 speed Golf diesel as well..

It is a lovely example to be fair. In silver, with the optional electric sunroof (and std air con), and it genuinely is immaculate. I know it has been very reliable in the time she's had it. The MAF sensor was replaced (with a genuine VAG part) a few months ago, and a there was a central locking fault early on which was sorted first go under warranty. It has been serviced on the button and never caned.

Any input welcome.

Cheers

I wondered if you could throw some light on a problem that has recently developed - car is a 1998 Galaxy V6 Ghia Auto 74,000 miles. When starting from cold and putting into 'D' or 'R' there is a delay for about 10 seconds before the car responds and starts moving, as if it is in neutral then suddenly the transmission engages and it surges forward or backward.
Recently the gearbox mountings were replaced by the main dealer and I wondered if they might have disturbed some of the multiplug connections, or it may be a problem with the selector (dirty connections, worn etc).
When it is warmed up it is fine, changes perfectly no problems.
I thought it might be the selector in the car as some Vauxhalls can display similar problems with age.

Thanks Read more

Cheers, thanks for the suggestions. It is the Volkswagen V6 engine I think same as in the Golf - I didn't know it was a timing chain rather than belts, worried they might snap now!
It may well be old or low fluid level as when Ford dealer changed some leaking gearbox seals might not have topped it up properly since problem only started since they did the work. Don't want to go back there due to big bills and age of car doesn't justify it. Also had problems with coils, HT leads misfiring etc but sorted now. Goes well for it's age. Will check fluid asap.
