Hi guys,

I have found a 2002/02 BMW 525i Sport with Leather. It seems a very nice car.

But...

It has 155,000 miles.

I am no stranger to high mileage cars and have found them an excellent way of getting a newer car than would otherwise have been possible, or simply saving a pile of cash. My current Mondeo is now at 138k and is still excellent, and my first car, a Citroen Xantia, was traded in at 167k. Now, I had planned to buy a high mileage 5 Series anyway - again, to take advantage of the lower prices you get given they are undesireable.

But I had planned on 90-120k.

What are the potential pitfalls of a 155k car, and is it a bad idea? I have already figured the residual value of this car will be zero. If I buy it, I will never sell it, so depreciation is not a concern. My current thoughts are that it is entirely possible that this 2002 car with 155k could be in as good, if not better condition than 80-120k 2000 cars. My reasoning for this is as follows:

The car will have to have spent a considerable amount of time on the Motorway in order to rack up so many miles in so little time. Aside from stonechips, I would figure that a 200 mile motorway trip is less wear on the suspension, brakes, gearbox, engine, seats and interior than 100 miles of town mileage, which would feature frequent stop-start work, getting in, getting out, etc. So, in that respect, could it be the case that in reality the only negative aspect of this car over, say, a 2 year older example with 100k on the clock is the residual matter.

I am sure my feelings must be flawed - I would appreciate if some of the more learned members of this forum could point the flaws out. Remember, I am after flaws which DO NOT equally apply to an older, lower mileage example. I am aware of the pitfalls of E39 ownership of 80-120k mile cars, but not beyond this.

I do, however, envisage the price of this car will offer a significant saving over a 100k 2000 example, which can of course be used to offset higher maintainance costs, whatever these may be.

Finally, my copy of Glass's does not list mileage this high. What would be your estimation of this cars value? It is a Sport model, and it has full main dealer BMW SH. There are 10 stamps in the book, I think.

Half of me thinks I am silly to even contemplate this, and should revert immediatly to my previous plan of spending several thousand more on an older, lower mileage car. The other half says 'Errr hang on, its what, 15k more than your Mondeo? And thats a FORD!'.

What are BMW's like for rattles, squeeks and general feelings of old-and-naffness at this sort of mileage?

Many thanks. Read more

Well I have to say my trusty automatic 1999 bmw 328i sport coupe is still going strong after over 234000 miles, it has done most of these miles on the motorway, i bought it with 67k on the clock and its has all the original running gear. I will state that it gets serviced at least twice a year. It does not lose oil and its not smokey either although the interior is getting a bit tatty. Most reliabe car i have ever had, it has seen off two golfs and is on par with our lexus for reliability. Like they say if it aint broke dont fix it.

The two new front tyres just fitted by the dealer to my Focus Zetec have the name 'Event' on them.I have done a search on these and it just brings up a mobile tyre fitting coy.Anyone know who makes them? Sound like budget tyre to me. Read more

Event Tyres are a budget branded tyre but are still a safe and tested tyre.

event tyres are also a mobile fitting service but i dont think that they are linked

This never seems to appear in the maintenance schedules, but I was just wondering if, after 120,000 miles, it might be worth dropping the gearbox oil out of the Mondeo and filling with fresh stuff? I plan to keep the car for a bit by the way.

This gearbox actually seems to have a drain plug as well.

Would you bother? Any experiences to share?

Cheers

About one month after the 3 year warranty expired, my wife said that her Jazz was a bit jerky. I said it's likely that the plugs need changing as she does many very short journeys and at the last Honda service I declined the plug change as they wanted £150 to do it!! Seeing as the car had only done 13K they said it should be fine.

Anyway the car got worse so a recommended local garage done the plugs for £60. The problem persisted. I took it back to the garage and they ran a diagnostic check which threw up zero faults!! He said therefore it could only be one of two things - an air pressure sensor in the manifold OR most likely the exhaust gas regulator (EGR). He said it is a common for these to stick. Problem is if he changed the EGR and it was the other problem then I'm hit with 2 bills! He suggested I get the actual fault diagnosed by Honda.

Honda want £60 just to tell me what's wrong and a further £60 over and above the fitting quote from the garage (who told me it takes 10 minutes to fit!!) Anyway Honda agreed that the EGR is the likely cause as these parts are prone to sticking!!

My question is that our car has only just done 14K miles and now we're faced with a bill of over £300 for a part that they know can be faulty so surely this is more of a defect that should be rectified FOC? What happens if the new part fails in another 14K - I get screwed again!!

Anyone else heard or had this problem?

Did you try getting a proper diagnostic done first, or just change parts at random ?

According to the new Ford Focus manual tyre pressures for 205/55 R 16 Diesel engines with normal load up to 3 persons is 34 lbf front and 34 lbf rear. According to the plate on the drivers door inside they should be 33 lbf for front and rear. According to the Michelin web site the Pilot Primacy 205/55 R 16 should be 30 lbf for front and rear.

So what are the correct tyre pressure for every combination of Ford Focus car type & engine ?

Well according to our Rapid Fit the Michelin Pilot Primacy, fitted as standard issue from new, should be 30 lbf front and rear for the 1.6 TDCi Zetec hatchback, 32 lbf front and rear for the 1.8 TDCi Zetec hatchback.

When I drive the Focus Zetec 1.6 TDCi with 34 lbf in the front and rear tyres the ride feels hard and somewhat jittery. When the tyre pressures were set at 30lbf front and 30lbf rear the ride was significantly better, more comfortable, quieter, and the balance of the car felt better. I experienced a similar significant difference in the Focus Zetec 1.8 TDCi with 33 lbf in the front and 32 lbf in the rear.

Could this be why some people find the new Focus ride a bit hard at times, could it be the tyre pressures for the tyre fitted to the car have been inflated a little too high ?

If anyone would like to post their findings for tyres for the Michelin Pilot Primacy or any other tyre they are using on the new Ford Focus please do so for whichever car/engine you have experience of. Also how have you found the ride, comfort, noise levels, handling etc. ? Read more

In the original posting, the pressures only differ by one or two
psi.(guage accuracy is less than that). The manual has to cover drivers
and passengers from 5 stone to 25 stone-so you could be
looking at a car with a driver alone at 5 stone
to 5 passengers at 25 stone each(plus their luggage)-quite a difference
If you find pressures you're happy with, stay with them.

>>
Most manufacturers go on the basis of approx 75KG(12 stone) weight of each person.I have noticed tyre pressure discrepancies like this before.I usually stick with the pressures as indicated on the vehicle sticker or handbook rather than the tyre manufacturer as they will test their tyres on vehicles of varying weight.

Hi, I have a 6000-CD stereo in my Focus (2002 - 51) of which I've had since new and 2 weeks ago lost all reception to FM Radio channels. I can receive AM/MW stations no problem, CD is working OK, but no longer get FM stations.

Removed Radio to confirm Aerial is still connected.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Read more

Hi all,

I have for a while been contemplating painting the alloy wheels on my 1984 Audi Coupe GT in white. The alloys are currently a dullish silver finish. The alloy wheels are standard on this car (the multispoke ones)

Is it possible to paint or spray alloys at home or is professional equipment needed?
What paint or spray do you guys recommned?

Anybody done this before....any tips or advice? Read more

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a idling issue that I am currrently having with a 2003 1.6 16v Renault Scenic (Petrol).

The vehicle drives perfectly both cold and hot, however when starting the vehicle from cold it will not idle. In addition to this, the vehicle sometimes requires a few seconds turning over.

I have checked previous forums, it was recomended that the crank angle sensor be changed to solve the problem, I changed the sensor but the symptoms still exist.

I was wondering if anyone had experienced or cured the problem?

I do not believe the problem to be the coil packs as the car runs well (apart from idle) and no DTC's have been found.

Spark plugs and the air filter have been changed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I've read on this site and elsewhere that people have found out when cars were last taxed from DVLA. I can't find out how to check this and want to find out what happened to my old car (no major reason just curiosity realy.)

Can anyone post a link to where to do this please? Read more

hi,
i have been having problems with my vivaro 1.9dti 100ps.

the van seems to be hesitating especially in low gears, then has a slow pick up eg:the symptom is as if a car has too much fuel going through?sometimes it will drive ok,but it is dangerous as going onto roundabouts, the van just has not got any pulling power.

also the speedo has stopped working, and as soon as i hit approx 50mph the engine management light appears and stays lit until i switch off the engine and restart and it disapears?

the van seems to drive fine at high speed, even though the light comes on at approx 50mph?
i have booked the van for a tech2 fault test this week, but was wondering if any of you guys could give me some advice before the dealer starts saying it needs a new ecu etc.

would it be worth buying a odb2 disc,i am not sure if it will work with a 2002 vivaro though?
or i have seen the tech2 readers/software for sale.

any advice would be great!

thanks
