Timaru

Hi - The power steering on my 2.2 estate (2003) has been noisy and there have been traces of hydraulic fluid on the garage floor.

My local (very good) independent garage have just had a look at it and traced the leak to the back of the engine bay but can't get to it without dropping the sub frame to make the repair.

My question is - can this leak be suspension related as the manager says as I thought the steering and the suspension on the C5 were separate systems.

Can anybody shed any light on this and should I take it to a Citroen dealer?

Thanks in advance, Jon.

Hi Jon,

How did you fix this in the end, I think I might have the problem....

Question Italian Tune Up
akey

I have read numerous recommendations for the Italian Tune up in posts on these forums. I must admit to not knowing what it meant so I have done some research which leads me to ask the question, whilst I would have no problems in red lining a petrol engine, I am very concerned to red line a common rail diesel engine.
I hope I have understood the concept right but it basically suggests to me that you have to cane your car to get it as hot as possible. This sounds pretty unhealthy to me, I just wondered what the general concensus was, especially on a high tollerence diesel lump (ford 2l 130 TDCi) Read more

ajit

Where did you do this ajit? Sounds like a great day!

Actually did it in India- I live in Bangalore, the track is in Madras (320 km - 4 hours away). Say a lot for the honda - drove it on Sat morning, reached around lunch time. Madras is around 35 degree C !!!. Do checks on the car, change to some nearly new tyres (plenty of folks keep up grading!) and get going from 3.30 till 6.30 (not continuous)

Next day - went in a 6.30 am (had track all to myself) and drove for a an hour. Tyres were worn down, went out for breakfast. Returned and slapped the Yoko's on. 7 laps and then drove back to Bangalore. Car was much responsive after that.

Enough ratholing - another alternative to make your car peppier- not sure if it works on ultra high tech cars needing dealer resets) is to disconnect the battery for 10 min to make the ECU forget the normal settings. Reconnect and drive a la Italian Tune Up - ECU will then remember performance map as more richer feeds etc.

Thanks for replies to last post!
Now swinging back to the idea that we may have to get a 4x4, for reasons of ground clearance on our lanes, towing ease, and the fact that 4 kids(3 legally needing car seats - however much they insist they are too old for them) and dog just dont fit in anything else.
We are probably looking at buying something at least 5 years old,it must have 7 seats and it will be sole family car. Does anyone have any thoughts about the most economical to run?

Two issues really? Economical 4 x 4 AND 7 seater. Mmmm. Suzuki SJ 410 with a trailer for the children? They would love it but maybe H & S regs and insurance would not. There is one VW Caravelle Synchro on Autotrader but its a petrol - not so ecomonical I guess. Every evening on my way home I pass a Renault Espace Quadra. OK, i was only trying to widen the debate a little! IIRC County Conversions did a 4 X 4 Transit which you could put seats into? So many possibilities really.

Ok, the mg ZR 1.8 seems to be pretty reasonably priced, especially second hand. However I was wondering before really considering buying one if it is likely that with the closure of Rover there may be serious issues that I dont know about.
Is it likely that parts will be real hard to get in the future?
If so are they likely to become really expensive?
Finally, if Rover went bust..... is that due to bad cars??

Itd be helpfull to hear what people think as my knowledge of anything mechanical isnt the best!! Read more

After seeing a few more positive posts about the MG ZR, it's proded me have a test drive in one if i can find one in the "plus" spec, although my budget is about £5k or less.

Quick update to the loans question (cos I can, even in a locked thread :-) )

For a degree course the NHS pay the course fees and a means tested loan. The LEA (for it is they) consider payment of course fees as a bursary so therefore we ARE getting a bursary, even though we get paid nothing on the means tested bit.

Reasonable enough I suppose.

As to the other idea, we did look at the Diploma course but there were a number of reasons why she didn't want to even start on that then switch to the degree, most of them being altogether too dull to discuss here...

Thanks all.

The ignition coil has just failed on my 2002 1.6 Focus after 73000 miles. The engine management light came on and the engine started firing on 3 cylinders. My local garage said he was regularly replacing coils in 1.4 and 1.6 Focus's. After reading about inherent problems in Focus's, the failure of a coil was not one of them. Anyone else heard of this fault? Read more

Sounds like great fun! I'm glad it chose the Lancs to break now!

Would an 01 plate Ford Galaxy clutch and flywheel replacement cost 850 quid? Some bloke on another forum I'm on has been quoted that (apparently the parts are 900 quid from Ford) but it sounds like he's getting ripped off here.

Any advice?

Yes, my suggestion to anyone buying a modern CR Diesel is to put the fuel money they save over the petrol equivalent into a piggy bank every time they fill up. If they do loads of miles then eventually there'll be enough in there to cover the cost of a new DMF or repairs to the injection system, as required.

I have a problem i'm hoping you guys can help me with. I want to buy a new MX5. I know a new hard top version is due in a few months time and i've been offered a great deal to buy a current soft top. This is my first convertable car and i am worried about what it's like to live with a soft top car. What's it like to live with in the depts of winter when it's lashing rain etc. Having seen the roof recently, it's thinner that i expected it to be. So any advice and reviews from MX5 owners would be great. Should I dive right in and enjoy the original or wait for the hardtop. I really love this car. Thanks Dermot, Read more

Thanks a lot guys. Thats the kind of stuff i needed to hear. I think i will go for the soft top. I'm in Ireland so believe me prices here are a LOT more that those some of you have quoted. You luckly sods. There virtually giving them away. I'll be paying ?32,000 and that's cheap over here as they are normally ?35,600. It's Metallic Electric blue and all the nice toys. I'll let you know how i get on.
Thanks for the advice Guys.

Evening all. Just been trying to change the plugs on my 2003 1.2 Ibiza as the originals are still in- managed the first 2 easy enough, not too tightly screwed in but am having real trouble with the third as however hard I dare try it won't turn one bit.
I've given up on it for now as I don't want to snap the plug off but does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it out? Would putting WD40 around it and leaving it for a bit do anything?
Any help gratefully appreciated.

Hi folks,

Has anyone any suggestions for clutch slip on a Terrano II 2.7TDi. Car was bought online form UK company (found out it was built in France for sale in Cyprus).

It's a 53 plate with 24K miles. Symptom is clutch slips (4th / 5th gear after around 2000 - 2200RPM with foot to the floor). Doesn't do it from cold (takes 1/2 an hour driving or more to show), no better/worse towing or 4WD.

First noticed problem at 11K miles, got worse and by 13K miles (Nissan dealer replaced clutch under warranty at 13K but stated clutch hardly had any wear). Noticed slip again at 21K miles, went away, came back again at 23K miles (last month Nissan dealer checked clutch control set-up/tolerances and was in spec, then raised High Tech inquiry with Nissan). Just back from towing in France and clutch OK again!

Other things:
What is a clutch damper? (and why does the 3rd thicker pipe in the block dissapear all the way to the rear offside wheel well)?

Could heat / cold be allowing pressure to build up which is partially activating the slave cylinder?

Is it normal to be able to feel substantial heat at bottom of gearstick after driving at motorway speeds for a while?

Problem is my warranty runs out in 5 days and I've still not heard back from Nissan (anyone know what rights I might have at this stage?).

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Folks,

Dealer got in touch and raised a job card while still in the warranty period.

Car to go in for some checks this week.

Still to hear back from Nissan Customer Services (dealer suggests that nothing will be done under warranty but NCS may offer a short continuation up to 6 months if the fault returns).

Thanks again...
