Hi all,
We have a problem with our Toyota Rav4 2.0D4-D diesel ('02 reg, 90k miles) and I hope someone can help!
My wife noticed yesterday a very unusual sound when pulling away in 1st and 2nd as well as reverse. It appears to come from the engine bay and is a sort of rattling/gringing sound - very difficult to describe. We took it straight to the local Toyota main dealer and it was diagnosed as a flywheel failure, which requires a new clutch, flywheel and £1650 from our savings(!) I have had a look on the toyota owners club forum and it has been discussed there, but both the garage and Toyota customer relations say it is unusual and that they can not offer any goodwill towards the repair.
Does anyone have any experience of this? If so, is it a common problem and has anyone else got a goodwill contribution?
Interestingly, one comment on the other forum suggested that changing the fuel filter cured the problem - any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

Ok, but it just shows how difficult this gets because this car can be fitted with different gearboxes?
My info gives me 2 types of fluid depending on which box is fitted. But have been to dealers before about subjects like this and nearly always get told, we only use this 1 fluid!
I have Opel numbers, 1940764 and 1940768 depending on gearbox type fitted.
low power in 3rd & 4th gear, 1,2 & 5 all fine, manual gearbox

hi do you know which solenoid it was as I have same problem- thanks Andy
How much roughly would it cost to have this done, does it take out all the scuffs/small surface scratches and can anyone recommend someone in the Gravesend/Dartford area thats does this and is honest with the price?
If it does bring it up well I would like to get the Accord I bought yesterday done.
Thanks for any help. Read more
A good valeter can remove the vast majority of polishable scratches if they are suitably skilled. Dont assume that valeters can only clean cars. Many will have picked up skills related. I was taught to mop cars by a bodyshop guy who did Rolls-Royce/Bentley so I consider myself to have been taught by one of the best - he certainly managed flawless work on cars worth quarter of a million so thats good enough for me.
To polish back the paint ( mopping ), the glaze the paintwork and finished with carnuba wax, I charge £40 and take about 3-4 hours. That has always left my fussiest customers happy and Im talking about some of the most anal kinda people you will ever meet.
Now maybe im below market price, I never check, but that valet has never let me down for the majority of scratches. Price isnt everything.
Anything that cannot be mopped back, can be flat n polished by a good bodyshop if you cant find a valeter who is willing, using fine grit wet/dry paper.
Hi,
Do any of you have any tips on how to restore tired looking dull red paintwork.
I have polished using Autoglym Super resin Polish but it shines it up for about two days and then its dull again.
How can I get a deep glossy looking red? Read more
Good point although if you work as a valeter, you know that water and electricity can work side by side if you follow plain common sense and I was assuming boxer99 has the required amount!
A garden hose is fine if you have one of those nozzles on the end so you dont have it running while you use the polisher. As far as the amount of water goes, it doesnt matter how much water you put on as it dries quite quickly when combined with compound, but more is better. I soak the area im doing, then apply compound, then immediately buff it.
It's not exactly technical, but then it's not a discussion either so I hope I've hit the right forum. My "new" 1997 Peugeot 306 1.9D has 175 / 70 R 13 tyres. Michelin at the front and Goodyear at the back.
The tyre pressure label on the side of the door has completely faded and I don't know what tyre pressures I need. The handbook says look at the door.
Does anybody know? My internet searches have led me down many interesting paths, but have not come up with the necessary goods. Read more
I've just bought a Haynes manual for the car. It must be about 20 years since I've looked in one - aren't the pages very thin and poor quality now.
Anyway, Haynes says for my case 2.4 bars (35psi) front and 2.4bars (35psi) rear. So that's what I'm sticking with.
A couple of 306 diesel variants do show a pound or two LESS in the front than rear !
I know the answer will be no but is worth asking.
Over 20 years ago dad had to scrap his car which has been in the family for 18 years. It had a distinctive numberplate.
is it possible to put life back into old registeration plates? or is it a case once it is scrapped the number no longer exists

Liase with the owners club. If you can prove it, and they or the club DVLA delegate the matter to agree, and if the plate has not been re-issued then you can get a plate back, but non-transferably. Quite fair really for those of us who would rather see old plates on old cars (or bikes).
Many, many old cars and bikes have had this sucessfully done.
Just bought a nearly new A6 2.7 TDI - surprised to see the service indicator say that there is 14500 miles to go before service required. It has 4000 on the clock - I'm pretty amazed this is good for any engine, longlife oil or otherwise, to do 18000+ from new on factory oil - any thoughts? I'm tempted to sneak in interim oil and filter at every 10000 - where to get hold of correct spec diesel engine oil and Audi oil filter?
Also seem to be trapped in Audi dealership for servicing to maintain warranty thru to 2009- any thoughts on risk / benefits of independent servicing?
Interestingly this car has been used as a company car at Bently Crewe for 4 months only - surely a "VW-Audi" "arrangement" to get nearly new cars onto forecourt at greatly reduced prices (in this case nearly £10K off new price after fairly hard negotiation and cash offer) - can't conplain as it seems OK value to me at the price sold - why not be more honest about pricing structure? Another fine example of why it would be a good idea to make threads read only after a year or so of inactivity.
THIS THREAD WAS OVER 4 YEARS OLD. THE OP MAY WELL HAVE SNUFFED IT!...
I've just been offered, as part of my bank account upgrade, free membership with Green Flag including HomeCall. I'm currently a member of the AA and have been now for 6 years, paying £90 per annum for membership including Roadside and Relay and, even though I've only used them once, I'm more than happy with the service they provide- they got to me in 20 minutes when my head gasket failed on the M5.
Before deciding whether to stay with the AA or switch to Green Flag to save myself £90 per year, I would like to hear some people's experiences of Green Flag, both good and bad before making the switch. I do approx 20k per annum, much of it on motorways, so membership of a decent breakdown organisation is essential.
Thanks in advance

Been with National Breakdown/Green Flag/Direct Line since 1982, probably used them about 10 times. Reasons for callout have ranged from puncture with stuck wheelnuts to through bust radiator to cambelt failure with a mix of roadside repair and recovery to home/garage. Agents have been, without exception, good to excellent. Callouts local to home are usually routed to Freeways of Weedon, who on one occasion were at the car before I'd walked the quarter mile back from the 'phone box. In another 30 seconds he's spotted arcing on the LT side of the coil and replaced the defective connector.
If you're recovered home out of hours they will return later to collect the car and ferry it to repairer, not all breakdown services do this.
My only gripe with them has been lack of geographic knowledge at the control centre , one girl stuggled to find Bakewell, another asked me if an East Midlands village between Bedford and Wellingborough was in London. On a much ealier occasion the recovery vehicle was in orbit round a Tesco in Southampton while we waited patiently on the A45 by the store at West Hunsbury (Northampton)!!
