A failed head gasket will not of itself cause overheating but what it does do is pressurise the cooling system and blow the water out - then it wil overheat. If you are loosing coolant that could be the problem, check around the filler cap and drain pipe for signs of dry antifreeze.
Set off this morning on the drive from Stockport to Shrewsbury. As soon as I started moving there was a thunk-thunk sound. Pulled in and found a big screw embedded at right-angles to the tyre... I have my suspicions it was put there as I've never seen something that big go in at that angle before but that's not really the point here!
Does anyone know of any tyre repair or replacement places in Stockport or south Manchester that will be open on Boxing Day? Everywhere seems to be closed until Tuesday. (I think the big boys are missing a trick here, open just a few branches on Boxing Day and you'd rake it in from people like me who have problems!)... Read more
The 175 will give better grip in wet conditions and in snowy conditions much better grip. The weight of the var will make the narrower tyre bite through the water and snow through to the tarmac where the grip is, the wider tyre will potentially ride on top of the water and snow and have little or no grip. In the dry the wider tyre will certainly give more grip but manuufacturers choose the tyre size following much research and other than appearance bigger options rarely do anything better, ask a BMW owner.
It is unwise to fit differnet size tyre on the front and rear unless it is a manufacturers option, if you do not tell your insurance company you will probably find yourself without cover after an accident if the size is not standard or a manufacturers option....

That's the good news I was hoping for. Thank you for your help.
I bought a Mazda 6 3 months ago. It was a pleasant car. But 3 weeks ago, DCS Light and ECU light comes on at the same time. I got it checked in Mazda dealer, they said it is the EGR Valve sticking and need cleaning. They reset the alarm and I drove back without get it cleaned straight away. The engine seized at traffic light when i was on my way back home. After that, the massive knocking sound comes from the engine. I drove back to the dealer and they said it must be big damage in the engine and suggested that I might need a new engine which would cost me £8k++.
I towed my car to my local garage, get them to strip the engine and found that the cranshaft is gone. I have ordered a recon engine from ebay, new clutch kits and new dual mass flywheel. The biggest anxious question is "Have I sort out the root cause that caused my engine to damage at the first time??" If not, the root cause is going to do the same again after I have paid a fortune to get the car working again. I have read on some of the forum about the DPF problem. Could it be the same problem? Shall I remove the DPF or get it regen when the engine is up and running? Could the DPF blockage become too severe and damage the brand new engine again while I tried to get it regen?... Read more
Isn't this sad, go back a few years to cars like the 626 or even the sister car to these troublesome Diesels the petrol engined 6, trouble free cars that give years of reliable service.
Good thing though the internet, you know who NOT to buy cars from by how they fix problems....

Am considering whether to buy a set of winter tyres for the car but, as my Summer tyres will also need replacing at the end of winter, that's quite an outlay.
Are 'All Season Tyres' a good option and if so has anyone any recommendations?... Read more
As these were the factory fit and have performed OK why change?
I think they're very noisy, so that's my reason for wanting something different. Agreed that they perform decently, as I've found with most Hankook tyres. ...

Over the last 6 thousand miles my car has been losing power (completely) or going into limp mode. This has happened 6 times and always between 1,500 and 2,500 revs, once in 3rd gear, twice in 4th and once in 6th. The car just rolls as acceleration doesn't do anything and there are no lights on the dash nor codes logged. Each time I start the car again and it either goes nicely or on two occasions it has gone 'limp' again while getting back up to road speed.... Read more
A few months ago those symptoms for me were due to excessive carbon build up on the variable vane turbo.
The fix was a prescribed high revs run (as detailed by manufacturer to main dealer) which as I recall was >4000rpm for about 45mins....
Hi,
Owners manuals for 4x4s appear to suggest that tyres are rotated front to back every 7 or 8,000 miles. This is to balance out tyre wear, ensure tyres are similar thickness which assists the 4x4 system.... Read more

i cant hear the crank shaft pulley but will check that anyway as they are common for going, i spoke to a diesel company and they said that because i have air in the pipes it could be leaking back and maybe worth putting in a non return valve but god knows where i would get the right on
