Hi all, not sure if this is the best place to post this but I'm just looking for some advice.

My Mum currently drives a 2005 VW Golf 1.4 FSi which went to our local mechanic last week to have its MOT. Now we have used this mechanic for a number of years and he has always seemed relatively competent/capable however I have discovered a serious case of incompetence!... Read more

Just as JC2 says, It shouldnt of been MOT'd as the ABS light function is part of the MOT !

I cannot get a ring spanner or a socket onto the sensor to unscrew it. Has anyone removed one of these before? Thanks. Read more

I agree. There is no gauge and with sensor disconnection the PCM is in default mode causing the fan to run continuously. With connection the fan, as far as I can ascertain, only runs when the air con is switched on. When I replace the sensor (I have already purchased a new one and cannot return it) the fan hopefully will cycle on when engine coolant temperature exceeds 105-110 as you indicate. After replacement of the sensor I may as well disconnect the battery for 24 hours to (I guess) clear codes in the PCM to reach default upon battery reconnection.

Not a completely safisfactory situation since I don't have a code scanner.

this morning the temperature just touched the red zone and then slowly dropped back to normal and again touched and then dropped back to normal. Went to the nearest Halfords, checked for the coolant level and found it to be empty!! (though the car was serviced at Kwik Fit just a month back). Approx 2.5 litres of Coolant easily got poured in the coolant reservoir.

(How come the coolant became empty in a month - hope its not a failed engine head gasket or something. There is no engine fault light or any loss of power etc..) ... Read more

Sorry Sam76

My head gasket is gone on the Avensis, 87400 miles.
You said you get it services in Kwit fit?
Did Toyota raise any issues about not being serviced in a Toyota centre?
Thanks

I am seriously considering purchasing this car but a few niggles concern me. The brakes are a little soft at the beginning of brake pressure and the ride and comfort levels over bumps tends to be a bit choppy, the clutch - read below.

Also on the test car I drove the clutch bite was only 1 cm from the floor. It was a used car with 3.5k on the clock, other non-econetic Fiesta's I've tried didn't have this problem. Is there an issue with the Econetic or did this car have a clutch issue ? Even the sales guy had problems controlling the clutch even though he insisted they were all like that, I disagreed with him and said it was fault.

Is this the norm for this car in your experience and if not can anything be done to resolve these issues ? Thanks. Read more

Having had another test drive using a different 1.6 TDCi Econetic I can confirm the ride is more comfortable with the 175/65 tyres compared to the 195/50 tyres on non-econetic cars.

Also the smaller overall footprint of the 4 tyres (some 80mm less than standard tyres) means there is less road surface to ride over and this translates to less road noise and fewer bumps being transmitted into the cable area. This in turn translates to a real improvement in cable refinement and comfort, and at the legal max speed (70 mph) road noise is well suppressed on all roads surfaces....

I am a car dealer and one of my 1st and best customers have came back to me with an issue that is frustrating us. The rear window opens seperatly to the boot but does not de-mist and the rear wiper does not work. Possible a seperate issue (bulb may need changing) but the 3rd brake light also doesn't work. The vehicle was taken to a Peugeot specialist local to us and they said the vehicle will need a rear window replacement as the rear wiper takes its power from the glass. My customer has found that they can claim on their insurance (which doesn't affect their no claims bonus) for a replacement rear window and would have to pay an excess of £75. When autoglass arrived, they said that they had never heard of this and said that replacing the window would be a waist of time and money. We have already replaced the motor with a brand new one. Can anyone else confirm whether Autoglass or the Peugeot specialist is correct. Thanks in advance. Andrew-H Read more

Don't know how the 206SW is arranged, but my 207SW has a hatch-window in the tailgate. The wiper motor is in the tailgate and the wiper spindle separates when the glass is lifted. The only wiring to the glass is for the demister - which in my car has not worked for years, despite the claim from an autoelectrician that it did (I paid £70 for that useless info).

If your wiper motor runs without turning the blade, maybe it is disengaged?

I'm sure that various people have been in the same quandry with these cars, but the more I've researched, the more unsure i am.

My main concern is reliability, with regard to the VW & Audi, not sure about the BMW... Read more

What's the best way to remov the rubber seal/boot on the headlight bulb? I don't want to rip it and it looks very snug. All suggestions welcome ... especuially from someone who's actually done it! Read more

PRS264

Thanks for the explanation. I took the rubber boot and headlight out but the buld looked so snug that I thought it might have been attached permanently - I'll have a go at easing it off. Is there anything that makes this easier - heat, hot water? And getting the rubber back on ans over the buld - washing-up liquid, vaseline?

I've got a 03 plate 1.4 TDCi fiesta which stalls within the first half mile or so on cold days. I turn the key to position 2, wait 10 secs and dont see any glow plug indicator light, start the engine (no probs), then pull up the the end of the road, press the brake, then take my foot off the brake and the rev needle dips (this always happens but it usualy recovers), on cold days the needle drops too low and the engine stalls.I've replaced the glow plugs and tested the old ones (all were working) but this is still happening. Can I test the glow plug relay with a multi meter? Read more

A failed head gasket will not of itself cause overheating but what it does do is pressurise the cooling system and blow the water out - then it wil overheat. If you are loosing coolant that could be the problem, check around the filler cap and drain pipe for signs of dry antifreeze.

Set off this morning on the drive from Stockport to Shrewsbury. As soon as I started moving there was a thunk-thunk sound. Pulled in and found a big screw embedded at right-angles to the tyre... I have my suspicions it was put there as I've never seen something that big go in at that angle before but that's not really the point here!

Does anyone know of any tyre repair or replacement places in Stockport or south Manchester that will be open on Boxing Day? Everywhere seems to be closed until Tuesday. (I think the big boys are missing a trick here, open just a few branches on Boxing Day and you'd rake it in from people like me who have problems!)... Read more

The 175 will give better grip in wet conditions and in snowy conditions much better grip. The weight of the var will make the narrower tyre bite through the water and snow through to the tarmac where the grip is, the wider tyre will potentially ride on top of the water and snow and have little or no grip. In the dry the wider tyre will certainly give more grip but manuufacturers choose the tyre size following much research and other than appearance bigger options rarely do anything better, ask a BMW owner.

It is unwise to fit differnet size tyre on the front and rear unless it is a manufacturers option, if you do not tell your insurance company you will probably find yourself without cover after an accident if the size is not standard or a manufacturers option....
