Has anyone had the cam belt on their Polo changed by an indie garage, and if so what did you pay? I’m in East Hants so not a cheap area. I have had an indie quote £575, and main dealers at £675 and £800.
Can I assume the water pump does not need changing? ... Read more
Bearing longevity has improved greatly in recent decades. One hardly ever hears of alternator or water pump bearing failure -or indeed cambelt tension pulleys. I am amazed by how long wheel bearings last, considering they are lubricated for life. (Curiously, I have never read advice that the grease needs changing every 365 days, irrespective of mileage ;-)
Hi Backroomers,
I posted a few weeks ago re which SUV 18/19k budget. I currently have a Pug 3008 13 plate. Was going to get the new version, 3/4 years old or Kia sportage or Quashqua or something similar. I was put off the the new Pug 3008 by someone saying don't touch them, timing belt failures etc and the way 2 or belts can crash into each other and snap. ... Read more
Thanks everyone for the comments, I'll be sure to take the M sport and SE suspension into consideration, Ive heard the SE is much smoother. Also Id get noting bigger than 18/19in alloys. Like I say, Ive owned, mk3 and mk4 mondeos so size of 5 series isn't really an issue for me, Im used to larger cars. Ive never owned a BMW, so although there 'common' probably a step up in quality than the mondeo, although I like the mk5 Vignale version!. I'll be on the look out for lower milage 19 plate 530i in a couple of months, the market seems pretty expensive for used cars at the minute, not sure if I should wait a few months and see if they start falling again or bite the bullet and nail one now.
There are some web browser plug ins to track price reduction tracker in RightMove. These trackers show full history of a property's price reduction. This can help buyers to determine what to offer.
Are there any similar trackers for Auto Trader ads? I could not find anything on simple web search. ... Read more

I've never owned a diesel so a blocked DPF has never been an issue for me. Whilst out walking the dogs this morning, I noticed a neighbour was having their's cleaned by a company whose van proclaimed they fixed DPFs. Apart from the van, the tell tale signs were a fast revving engine and clouds of light coloured smoke.
So the question is what's in the smoke? I assume the particulates that have blocked the filter, but if not, where do the particulates go? Or does the cleaner which is injected into the system change the soot into something safe and environmentally beneficial to wildlife? Read more
Further to the above, you do get "bonding" in some filtration applications. For example, ionic bonding with solute gradient elution is used routinely, along with molecular sieving ("Sephadex") in protein purification, and activated charcoal is used in gas mask filters to adsorb nerve gases and such.
The last does suggest that elemental carbon, at least in some forms, could "bond" (not in this case actual covalent bonding, but an adsorption involving weaker intermolecular forces like hydrogen bonds) to a matrix....

Hey everyone
I have a ford fiesta and I've enumerated many of its faults in many threads here. One, that I've had since owning it is really starting to raise my dander. When I put the left indicator on, it stays on until I take it off (by pushing the stalk up), physically. Just today I did a loop around my house and took four left turns after touching the stalk once. However if I want to put the right indicator on it doesn't stay on at all unless I hold the stalk up with my hand (difficult to do when turning) or manipulate it very delicately into place. ... I can’t help with your problem with the stalk not returning from a left signal unfortunately. Mine was the opposite - it wouldn’t stop signalling right. That was after the switch clicked back to the middle position but had just a little upward play allowing it to make contact still. I fixed that by taping a 15g weight to the back of the stalk. Just enough to keep it in the right place but move both directions. I used an M10 nut and double sided tape but I’ll get a thin bit of lead sheet as it’s less visible. You might be able to fit a rubber band to bias yours upwards if you remove the shroud.

No replacement for displacement unfortunately. At least without compromises elsewhere.
Sure there is, sound engineering trumps all regardless of engine size. The problems we hear of surrounding small turbo engines, particularly the 1.0 Ecoboost, are not caused because the engine is small, they are caused by cost cutting.
Japanese manufacturers have been making ultra reliable small engines for donkeys years now, both n/a and forced induction. ...
I've been hearing a lot of talk about the 2023 Alfa Romeo Giulia, and I gotta say, I'm on the fence about it. On the one hand, it's got that classic Alfa Romeo style that I really like. And from what I've heard, it's got some serious power under the hood,
But on the other hand, I'm not sure if it's really worth the hype. I mean, is it practical for everyday use? Will it break down all the time and cost me a fortune in repairs? And most importantly, is it really worth the price tag?... Read more
...... "As for the newer cars, I don’t trust modern DPF equipped diesels (for good reason) and I don’t trust over-complex automated manual gearboxes, so that pretty much rules out 99% of modern Alfa models"
Modern DPF dielses are perfectly fine unless you drive lots of short journys. There is nothing else to worry about them, apart from the fact oil burners are effectivly dead in the water due to high fuel costs and the government (mistakenly) doing everything it can to outlaw them.
Having run Skoda DSG vehicles since 2011 I can assure you that the gearboxes are absolutely fine and its simply short-sighted to think otherwise.
As for "Modern Alfas" - they use the ZF box which is also used by Aston Martin, BMW, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Toyota......

DO NOT BUY ANY automated manual.
They are complex mechanically and wear. No-one at dealers is competent to fix them...
