Our car is shortly due it's 3 year service but the quality of service we've received from our local MG dealership has been very poor. Pre-booked appointments cancelled at short notice, wrong grade of engine oil used at the last service plus poor communication.

The car has a 7 year warranty (some parts are obviously excluded) which requires that the vehicle is serviced by an MG dealer.... Read more

Spark plugs at second service must be quite unusual, isn't it? My Toyota didn't require the plugs out until 60,000 miles. Mind you, they were startlingly expensive when the time came around!

Sulphur Man

An amusing, and somewhat pitiable thread.

Might as well raise a thread about the right to a bench in the local park.

Car is in perfect condition

Simple fact, no 13 year old car is in "perfect condition"...

When to replace a car.. would like to keep it running until next year but worried about DPF. Will talk to our regular independent garage and ask them to do a filter clean. We have a 2012 Ford S-MAX 2.0 TDCi Titanium with 160k mileage bought at 136k mileage one owner in 2019 (was a high mileage car for someone driving 19k p.a

. We don’t think the DPF has been replaced before we bought it. We drive around 7k per year, short journeys mainly unfortunately (life changes.. bought before pandemic yes that means a diesel isn’t the right choice now .. !) . we know this means DPF will not last as long. We’ve replaced timing belt and alternator. Assume that we are gambling with DPF and likely to need replacing this year? Read more

We got rid of our S Max aged 11 and 130,000 miles. Most of its life was spent doing short journeys with a longer drive every 2-3 months. We never had an issue with the dpf. The egr needed changing once and other than wear and tear that was about it.

Scotty Kilmar claims that all Japanese cars are not born equal and the best of the bunch are produced on home territory . Simple things like the quality of the paint and electrical components maybe but is is just the local content that lets cars built outside Japan down ?

But which cars are actually built there . Apart from checking the VIN plate for the first letter starting J it’s hard to tell.... Read more

The Mazda 2 is a favourite of SLO.

But I’m under the impression that some are made in Thailand and others Japan....

Had a 2017 Peugeot 3008 GT Line for over 3 years and while it was ok and lots to like, there were issues with the timing belt and some electrical problems and I think its time to move on.

My budget is about £25k max using my car as a trade in. I think I will probably stick to the SUV style (though I am tempted by some estates like the a6 Avant, E-class estate), but my missus likes the higher up driving position and I need to consider her needs too as well as having 2 kids.... Ideal features:

  • keyless
  • rear/360 cameras
  • heated seats
  • Large screen display/Nav
  • Android auto (nice to have)
  • Digital Dash (nice to have)
  • Hybrid would be good
  • Not Diesel - we only drive shorter distances
  • Automatic lights
  • nice interior/seats

Mazda CX30 SE-L Lux trim, ticks all those boxes (it's a mild hybrid)....

The Toyota Verso if you want pure reliability

This is in a 2015 onwards model, digital display. It's showing full, and the predicted remaining range seems to tie in with that - pretty steady, just varies depending on the weight of my right foot.

This is following a very flat battery, for reasons I'm too embarrassed to go into, so various electronic things got lost/reset. I suspect the fuel gauge problem is a consequence of that - needs some sort of recalibration? Or else it's just a broken sensor, and the flat battery is a coincidence.... Read more

BTW I've posed this question on the Mazdaforum website in case it's some Mazda2 specific 'feature'.

I am currently sat in a modern car dealerships waiting a service and I can’t get my head around the amount of staff.

So far I’ve worked out there are 5 sales staff, 1 senior sales staff, 2 people working the servicing and repairs department, 1 finance manager, 1 receptionist, 4 other people who I’m not sure what they do, 1 chap who seems to be the full time valet and cleaner, plus all the technicians, mechanics, etc in the back.

And yet there are no customers, only me in the waiting are.
No one is using the phones to find sales, they seem to be waiting for mug punters to walk through the door.

Respectfully, why do dealers need such large staff?
I understand it’s March plate change but I don’t see any 23 plates and my chat with one of the sales staff confirmed all the 23 plates have been picked up.

Mind you, on current new car margins, they can afford to hire and entire army of staff. Read more

I bought my Skoda from a family dealer with a smallish showroom by modern standards. At the front end, the dealer employs two sales executives, a sales manager, a receptionist and a service manager. Also there is a driver who takes you into town when your car is being serviced. All are total professionals, treat you with respect and are honest.

Contrast this with the plate glass franchises where as soon as you walk in, you're browbeaten by an army of sales staff and where after sales care is often rubbish.
