So looking at getting my first car and after a lot of research I think the BMW series 1 is for me. I’ve done so much research into this particular car, me mum was taking me sisters car in for a repair, the dealership has an onsite garage and she told the sales guy that her son (me) was looking for a car, mainly a BMW and all he said to her was tell him to steer clear of the BM’s those cars are always having trouble, though he didn’t really say what kind of trouble. Keep in mind that she didn’t say what make or version.

I’m looking at the 118i or the 116i version made between 2013 and 2015, so are they really bad cars only a lot of websites recommend them as a decent car, there not sales sites, so was the sales guy wrong about BMW or are there certain models ? Read more

I must admit davey that I've been really tempted to buy a replacement for my ageing (nearly 18yo) Mazda3, and there's a 2017 (facelift) 2L SE-L Nav 4dr going for £8.4k with only 45k on the lock, 1 owner and FSH at my local Ford dealer.

There are seven of them (4 doors), of that age, currently on Autotrader. Cheapest is £10995, dearest is £13495. ...

Just heard that a Fiesta owner who has the eco boost engine has been quoted £2800 for a belt change at 10 years as prescribed by Ford.

Similarly Honda quote a much more realistic figure !!! £1700.... Read more

What a stupid design. Its predecessor the 1.25/1.4/1.6 Zetec SE which was designed by Yamaha had a simple timing belt change which can be done today by any garage for £200-£300. Failures are almost unheard of also as it’s a very short belt run and under little stress.

My mechanic mate recently acquired a cheap 2006 built Fiesta 1.25 with 73k miles on that required some TLC, he found it still had the factory fitted timing belt on, new genuine belt fitted for piece of mind as he was flogging the car on.

Hello all,

I’m wondering if someone could give me some pointers before I take it to be looked at tomorrow.

Car is well serviced, maintained etc..

Driving along today on a short trip, engine management light and warning came up, “AdBlue System failure”

I’ve checked the AdBlue level, apparently has 2500 miles left.

I’ve read a few posts on other forums but doesn’t seem to be too common.

I’m bracing myself, any suggestions as to what it could be?

Thank you Read more

Is this a software glitch? Is there any reset that can be done? I’m so confused. My brain cell is over worked right now! ??

As mentioned, a good independent could do a scan of codes and see if there's anything serious.

2 questions 1. How did Honda get it so wrong with the 1.0 and the 1.5 turbo engines?

An old poster on here called 695 FBE reckoned that in the case of VAG, the older engineers retired or worked on the more prestigious projects, leaving the bread and butter work to the younger, less experienced engineers, hence the problems a few years back with timing chains, last generation PD engines e.t.c.

Maybe the same is happening with Honda, although I can't believe the Japanese mindset would work in a similar way. They are usually conservative in their engineering, making sure that something will work properly before it is pushed out. But the pressures on car companies to meet emissions regulations must be the same across all countries.

I’m hearing reports that the 12 volt auxiliary batteries aren’t up to the job in the HRV, Jazz Crossstar Hybrid and new model Civic.

Often requiring a call to Honda assistance who attend and jump start the car . But after up to six repeat experiences when the car is left in the garage for a week or lots of local runs , owners are resorting to buying a “ jump start “ pack.... Read more

If you bother to RTFM, you'll find that by leaving it in 'ready' mode, the engine will start now and then to re-charge both batteries.

Toyota do recommend using "ready" mode every week if you don't regularly use the car but there are issues for most mortals. To be in ready mode the car needs the keys in it which in todays world would probably end in theft and no payout. With the engine starting and stopping doing it in the garage is not an option....

I own a Landrover Discovery HSE Luxury (69 plate) which I have owned for 2 1/2 years and purchased an extended Landrover warranty in September 2022 as it reached 3 years old. The windscreen sealant failed in April of this year causing water to leak badly into the car every time it rains. I reported it straight away to my LR dealer (Hendy) in Southampton. They spoke to LR and a claim was authorised and a new windscreen ordered in April 2023. The leak is so bad it is not possible to drive the car without getting wet and it pours onto the transmission electrics. Even though Hendy LR covered the top of the screen with clear tape, it still leaks at times and the wind noise from the tape is really annoying over 50mph. I went back to Hendy and asked if they could provide me with another vehicle under the claim and they agreed and supplied a Hyundai Tucson. However, I have a caravan, a horse trailer, 4 children and we have two holidays booked in Cornwall and France which we are relying on taking the Land Rover. One is in July and the other August. We cannot fit our holiday kit in the Tucson and there is still no date provided for our windscreen - not even an estimated one. What can I do? We can’t tow our caravan, we can’t fit our roof rails or bike rack to the Tucson. I feel I bought a great family car but it has been unusable for getting on for 3 months with no end in sight. I feel powerless and unable to do anything - can you advise with any options I could ask for? Does anyone know how long LR windscreens take to turn up to the dealerships after ordering? Read more

With VW closing its largest EV plant in Germany due to “ Strong Customer Reluctance “ it seems to be having an effect on second hand EV prices.

Looks like my EV has done another Winter then Sammy. Still hasn't disintegrated or immolated itself. Very dull actually it just seems to start stop and go and almost silently too. No oil changes, no rusty exhausts, cracked manifolds or anything. Just no drama at all.

Should I demand a refund because of the lack of drama?

We go on holiday on Saturday, flying into Malaga airport. We booked a Jet2 Villas package deal, which includes car hire - all booked via Hays Travel.

Picked up the paperwork yesterday and discover the car hire is through OK Mobility. "Let's have a quick look at Trustpilot", I thinks to myself. Oh my word. The feedback is truly awful. It seems if you refuse their insurance and pay the €1350 credit card deposit instead (as I planned to; buying an excess insurance policy in readiness), they simply find 'new' damage and charge ludicrous amounts from the deposit. ... I'm not sure it's worth it over €80, although there is the principle.

Partly my fault. After a flight with two children I just wanted the car. The representative was high pressure, to say the least. Didn't give me chance to review the documents before signing and, in my opinion, must've known I was being double charged for insurance and had other extras added. I was told the documents were to be emailed to me - they never arrived. On returning the car, I found out they'd been emailed to hotmial.com, not hotmail.com. Convenient, huh. ...
