I posted a while ago about my brother who eventually bought a Mazda 3 from a national dealer. The car was in Mazda's workshop for most of the time he had it as the battery kept draining. Now he's got his refund, here's what happened...

He bought the car from Arnold Clark and almost daily the battery would die. It had gone to Mazda for investigation multiple times but they couldn't find anything. Eventually he complained to the finance company who agreed a full refund and compensation. Meanwhile, Mazda found the problem(s)..... A tracker fitted to the vehicle.... Read more

This particular large dealer chain have in recent years lost the local Honda and Toyota franchises due to substandard customer service and now in my town they’ve also lost Ford which was a very busy dealership. When the man himself left the business it was clear very quickly that the money men were in charge. Previously the firm was known for offering good value, particularly on new or nearly new cars which they bulk bought then offered substantial savings to the public. Latterly they’ve not been any cheaper than rivals despite not offering a standard 6/12mth warranty (unlike most rivals) and in fact they’re usually dearer when you add in this cost. The standards of prep their used stock goes through has always been subpar but at least they were cheaper in the past, not now though. Speaking to one dealer principal a while back regarding the poor condition of some of his stock revealed that they are charged a fortune (near retail) to do paintwork repairs by their own body shop nearby. This deters dealers from properly prepping cars and minor paint defects are left as they are. They get a bare minimum through the workshops too, the least they can get away with. If a timing belt is due then you can be guaranteed that it won’t be done for example. The founder of the firm will be turning in his grave.

Indeed i bought a pre reg Golf GT TDI from them at a very decent discount approx 15yrs ago ( still own it ) . On the day i collected it from a Glasgow branch SIr A .... C himself turned up and during his walkaround inspection of his dealership spoke to my salesman and also thanked me for my purchase . The salesman advised that he turned up unannounced at one or two of his dealerships each day much to the various branch managers irritation . He was getting on even them but kept them on their toes . They were indeed excellent for pre reg deals for a good few years but not much else . Times seem to have changed

Sad to say a sign of the times. I used to work for a top engineering consultancy (by numbers of staff and reputation), then the long-standing directors (who, bar one [the MD, an accountant] were all engineers sold out to a huge US firm (who has since bought two other previously top 10 firms in the industry) and made a packet....

Hi all,

I am recently having an issue where I get an intermittent low oil pressure warning on the dash. First time I got this message I pulled over and checked oil level and found it to be quite low, which is strange as I've not noticed any leaks/smoke. I did notice a small amount of oily residue around the injectors on top of the engine block - also strange.

Anyway I did an oil and filter change and have since driven the car for a few hours, same issue - intermittent oil pressure low. Appears completely random, twice on a 2 hour journey.

I've checked oil again, and I now note that there is a large pool of oil collecting inside the injectors. I plan to clean it out thoroughly tomorrow and see it comes back again. Also visible oil scorch marks on top of the plastic engine cover suggesting the oil has been burnt off (strong smell of oil inside bonnet too).

My question is what could be causing the oil to pool in this area and also could it be linked to the intermittent low oil pressure warning?

Should I change the oil pressure sensor as well?

Thanks in advance Read more

No knowledge of this engine, but a priori low oil level (which the OP reports) and low oil pressure correlation does not sound all that mysterious, plus if leaking oil gets on the oil pump belt drve ( oh, dearie me, WHAT a good idea) thatd perhaps explain a certain irregularity in its output.

Do a italian tune up use third gear on the motorway run it for roughly 30 mins

Since the car been doing short runs this may help in burning out the carbon.

Not sure whether this has been discussed before but why are rear daytime running not required by law? How many newish cars do you see without any rear lights on in attrocious driving conditions. Seems like a no brainer to me but there is obviously a reason. Read more

Hi, we're in the process of looking for a new car, and on our current car the engine light has come on. We booked it into the garage and they ran the codes... the garage has said it doesn't really like working with DPF filters and hence won't do any work on it. It's frustrating because we were in the process of looking for a new car. Anyway, my question is... do these codes relate to a clogged DPF? So could I get rid of the codes by getting the DPF cleanned (i.e. about £300). Here are the codes:

I was once a very proud owner of a 2002 Honda Accord that'd I'd owned for well over a decade and would fail its MOT every year, usually on welding, which I'd get done by whoever (the last welder was a mobile chap, he was not only awesome but also the cheapest). Bangonomics 101. Anyway, during those episodes, I learned (correct me if I'm wrong) that the MOT people aren't allowed to go scraping off any underseal, so I don't think you can really blame the MOT people as such for not discovering those massive holes.....

All these presumably would come under the 'due care and attention', reckless / dangerous driving parts of the highway laws. You have to wonder why specific offences of using a mobile phone etc is really needed, as surely these other ones should cover it, given attention and driving ability is compromised sufficiently to present a hazard.

The history is pretty simple I think. ...

Vaguely remember improvising a wheel arch liner from a bin bag, with a little sunflower oil in it. This goes off slowly and sticks the two sides together, giving the resultant sheet a bit of shape holding capability.

More SFO painted on the inside of the wheel arch helped hold it in place....
