March 2004

catalyst

I might want to buy a Nissan Almera on which there's a special offer running till the end of March. However, I can only buy it next month or May at the earliest. Can I still get the same offer ? Is May a 'bad' month to buy ?
Also, what do you reckon of the Fiesta and Focus ? (also offers on Ford in March) I want something very reliable and nippy (at least 0-60 in 11 seconds). The Ford seem to be on the slow side looking at whatcar ? figures.
Thanks for your opinions. There's too much choice around, I'm confused ! Read more

Speaking of Fords only ...

Ford have had special offers on Focuses and Fiestas every month for years (possibly for ever, but I don't go back that far). The special offers usually last for a couple of months, and when they expire another one comes along with slightly modified conditions. The special offers usually only apply to specific models in the range, and to cars with purchase completed before the end of the offer period. This usually means you have to buy from stock (no factory orders).

The current Fiesta special offer is for cars registered on or before April 14th, and amongst other things offers £1420 off a Fiesta Finesse.

But don't forget there are two discounts on every purchase - the non-negotiable special offer which you are entitled to as a right, and what you can separately negotiate with the dealer on top of that.

Our local rag carries a picture and story of a local Councillor holding up a large paper notice: WARNING POLICE - PERSECUTE BURGLARS NOT MOTORISTS.
He is positioned in front of the rear of a police van, obscuring the view of the operator of a camera which is pointed at oncoming traffic.
"His 45-minute protest in pouring rain was popular with motorists who sounded their car horns and gave him the thumbs up. Some even stoppped and shook his hand."
Apparently the officer explained he was 'just folowing orders', but made no attempt to arrest the Councillor for obstructing him in his duty.
The Councillor abandoned his protest only when the notice had become rain-soaked.

I use my Astramax van daily for /- 10 mile round trip, no problems. I recently did a 90 mile trip. On the way home everything was fine. Came into my drive and it conked out. Could not start at all. Still does not. A mechanic told me it was unlikely to be the glow plugs as the engine was still warm when trying to start it.Everything seems to be connected and the cam belt is not broken. Can anyone help me? Read more

Try checking suspension bushes, look for cracks, jack up and test for movement, use a bar to increase leverage.Hold the road wheel and waggle horizontally then vertically. If there is any play(in track rod ends, rack or wheelbearings)you should feel it.

Was in my local drinker last evo with a few bikers and other disreputable expatriates. We were talking about the kind of music that fits driving. Emily the owner who is absolutely gorgeous by the way threw this one on the CD ...........

'..ladies and gentlemen, from Los Angeles California....The Doors!"

Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel...

Best driving music ever or what.

What else you got? Bring it on.

Test Match Special in the 3500, ok, it's not music but it is live. I'm sure I could get Capital Gold on the trusty Radiomobile but I hardly ever have the radio on :)

As for other live albums.

Simple Minds - Live in the City of Light. I can't keep singing along to Alive and Kicking and Sanctify Yourself.

Pink Floyd - Delicate Sound of Thunder.

Studio Albums.

Leftism by Leftfield can easily get me carried away on a motorway.

I would like to know if there is an info. source in the net where I could get the prices that various german cars had in Germany the year that they were made.

(For example how much was sold a new BMW 320i in Germany in 2000).

Thank you for your help,

First I'd try to remove it by applying and buffing with a few coats of normal polish. If it hasn't damaged the plastic this should remove most of it.

You could then try T-Cut if this doesn't work but don't be too vigorous or you'll remove some of your own paint! Finish it off by applying normal polish again.

I noticed a long black line down the side of my motor last week. Autoglym polish removed it all without fuss.

In the late 1950s, early 60s, independent rear suspension was very expensive and not technically mature enough so this was the mid-priced alternative that offered a well established compromise.

It's a weighty solution but with 3.5L of V8 horses, not a problem. Even the 115Bhp 2L twin carbs could move almost 2800lbs of metal 0-60 in 12 seconds.

Question for HJ here. When are Vauxhall going to loan HJ a new shape Vectra (preferably a 1.8 or 2.0 petrol) so he can give us all a decent road test report?

I for one would be interested to hear his views on this car Read more

"And no, it wasn't me on the ring road. All our new vectras are marked. Doesn't stop many being oblivious to them though."

Must be a different section then, or maybe one on manufacturer's demo loan.

Definitely shifts a bit given right wellington!
