Recession Bites at Classic Auction Prices

Nice sale. Nice location. Nice weather. And the right day (Saturday).

But only the very special cars were making big money. ‘Hobby’ cars traditionally bought by middle class, middle-income enthusiasts seemed to suffer most.

Below are first results. Basically what was known as I walked away at about 17.00, nursing my back. Provisional bids not listed may have later been accepted.

The cars that exceeded their estimates were:

318: 2000 TVR Cerbera 4.5 litre £15,400 (est £7k - £10k)

324: 1964 Jaguar E-Type S1 FHC £34,720 (est 25k - £30k)

334: 1953 Jaguar XK120 DHC £75,040 (est 37k - £42k)

337: 1966 Sunbeam Tiger £19,880 (est £12k - £16k)

352: 1953 Jaguar XZK120 DHC £28,000 (est 15k - £20k)

353: 1949 Bristol 401 Coupe by Touring £8,120 (no reserve)

362: 1954 Lancia Aurelia B20 GT SIV £29,120 (no reserve)

367: 1973 Alfa Guilietta Zagato 1750 £27,440 (est £10k - £15k)

370: 1962 Daimler SP250 B D spec £43,240 (est £30k - £35k)

That’s the most important information any investor can glean from this.

Probably bargain of the day was the 1957 Wolseley 6/90, sold for  £2,352 and qualifying for next year’s HRDC. Strip the very nice interior (and preserve it), prepare it for racing, race it and it will almost immediately be worth £15,000 - £20,000. If Tom Christensen can win with an Austin A90, a driver as good as him can in that 1957 6/90.
