Wellgate

We have just returned home after a Dorset & Devon tour. The Beetle broke down in Bicester en route to Bath. The AA attended & correctly diagnosed the Dual Mass Flywheel as the problem. They piggy backed us to Bath, where Beetle was left at the main dealers. Flywheel was replaced & a new clutch installed. We set off for Lyme Regis with no problem until I reversed uphill into a parking slot. The smell of burnt clutch was awful. I switched off the engine to find that the gearbox was stuck in reverse. After a while it freed up into neutral, but on starting wouldn't go back into reverse & there was a nasty meshing of gears. The car was left for a couple of hours, restarted and all was ok. VW Bath were contacted & made an appointment with VW Barnstaple, our next port of call. Beetle was left with them & they reported that there was no problem, although they hadn't taken the clutch out. Initially they suggested it might be my driving technique, but then said that modern clutches didn't like reversing under load - uphill, extended distance, hooked up to caravan, etc. This doesn't sound right to me? Nevertheless, we returned to Norfolk without incident, until we actually arrived home. I had switched off to unload and, on restarting, the engine gave an unusual shudder. But all is well again today? With Best Regards Robert Read more

This is getting to be a regular discussion here, with various makes and types of cars.

Many modern Diesels (and petrols) are so high geared in first and reverse, and some modern engines, especially turbo Diesels, so lacking in the low speed torque necessary, that they struggle to perform the manoeuvering tasks asked of them if its anything even slightly out of the ordinary....

I've got a 2004 Astra 1.6 SXi with the Z16XEP twinport engine.

Up til yesterday evening, no problems - since we replaced the EGR valve and we fitted a new cam-cover to replace the original, a couple of months ago. it ran ok yesterday when we came to move it in the garage. it wouldnt tick over if we held it steady at about 1600rpm the revs would go up and down between 1600 to 2500rpm there is a strong suction at the air-filter it revs freely from about 1700rpm upwards no misfire!... I have a long commute through built-up areas , and through narrow country lanes where nifty overtaking comes in handy. I need to change to an automatic from my current basic manual Honda Civic as I have developed stiffness and a restricted range of movement in my hips. I also have back and wrist problems with neck stiffness, difficulty twisting, and sore wrists.

I have tried a CR-V but worry that it might be too high to come down and out of.... Read more

Thanks for coming back to us. Please ignore the last few words of madf's post: if he's a gentleman he'll post again and apologise.

I hope you'll find the time to come back and tell us how you get on with your car search: it seems there are quite a few people reading this who have (or whose family have) similar problems - with which I can only sympathise. With hip problems and a long commute, comfort is clearly vital, so make sure you get long test drives in any car you try....

Checking the bodywork and comparing the A4 with the Passat, the front offside wing appears to rust badly on Passats wheras the A4 s seem to be intact. So is the body/paint protection better on the A4?

Bought a Jetta 1.6 tdi SE brand new last month. Noticed a vibration through the clutch pedal (also through the footrest) and through the steering wheel when under load.

The dealer replaced the clutch and flywheel last week at 750 miles and three weeks old. Unfortunately the problem remains pretty much unchanged. Any ideas what the problem might be? Read more

Wrote to the Dealer Principal yesterday and I'll see what (if anything) comes of that.

I bought my car second hand in a private sale two years ago it is a 2009 . But only one key came with the car . I decided to get a spare key , took it to the dealer who struggled to code a key, Then after many attempts there was an error message on my dash saying safe . Any way the dealer said it needed a new dash control panel which i agreed to , but they cannot code this to the engine ecu . Now after weeks in the garage its been decided that the security code has been removed from my engine ECU , the garage are waiting on further advice from Seat Technical , but i spoke to the garage technician who says he can put the car back to the way it was with the original control panel but i wont have a spare key and goodness only knows what they'll charge me as my quote was to replace the control panel .

It seems to imply that the safe message means nothing as the security is out of the car , does this mean that the spare key which they have willl work as it doesnt have to be coded. Any advice would be appreciated as my car is low mileage and no mechanical problems , all i wanted was a spare key , Thanks Liz... Read more

During the MOT 3 years ago the examiner was under the car during the shake test and there was a loud bang from the front of the car. He dived out from under it and then reinspected and found nothing. He passed the car and couldn't confirm what the noise had been. On leaving the centre I felt that the steering wheel was rocking at low speed. He had advised that I get the 4 wheel alignment checked as the near side rear tyre was starting to scrub on the inside. Got this done the next day. 3 weeks later I was checking the tyre pressure and the front near side tyre was so badly scrubbed that I had to put on the spare. Took it to my local mechanic who recommended that I get 2 new tyres on the front and get the 4 wheel alignment done again. Got this done at a different tyre depot and the guy said there was something peculiar about the steering, but wasn't a mechanic so couldn't pin point the problem. Mechanic drove the car and agreed that there was a wobble on the steering wheel. Put a 2nd hand steering rack in. Now when the car went over 10mph the VSC, ABS and TRC lights would light up. Went to Auto electrician who advised that the computer was telling him that the wheels were pointing at 13 degrees when they appeared to be straight. Put a 2nd hand sensor on steering column. Didn't work. Advised me that I take it to main dealer who had it for a week. They changed the sensor for a new one and carried out the 4 wheel alignment several times. No avail. They asked me to tell them if I ever got it fixed. Suggested I try replacing the ABS pump. Got my mechanic to do this with a 2nd hand one. No avail. To date I have spent nearly £2k. The car has 105k miles. Any suggestions? Read more

Thanks for this Gordonbennet. What you are saying makes good sense. I'll come back when I've tried this.

Don't know if you've seen this clip, it should be a public information broadcast like we used to have years ago, how often do we see this exact manoeuver.

I don't think it is an error of judgement rather than some peoples arrogance of driving. I've seen people do similar dives across all lanes for the exit so close that they have almost hit the armco barriers that divide the slip road.

Sometimes it's arrogance other times it's jus poor navigation or lack of concentration. For a while I got in habit of taking M1 J19 in the outside lane, even if it meant speeding, rather than being cut up by last minute divers, ...
