The chap next door has a rusty van and its parked only about 3 feet from my very sporty Fiesta. I have noticed that his girlfriend never parks her Corsa closer than about 20 feet away.

People at work tell me this is because rust transfers from one car to another and will eventually write mine off.... Read more

I've had several experiences with insurance approved repairers and never had a good experience.

The answer they always seem to give is, What ever the problem "It was like it before the accident"....

Hi all

First time on this forum, so hello to all.

I have a C220 CDi on a W plate (2000). My problem is that the gears dont seem to engage properly, especially in the morning. When i start the car and put it in D, nothing happens. I depress the pedal and just get high revs, but no movement. Then it will move off really slowly. Then the gear seems to 'bite' and i jolt forward. Then it 'slips out' again. This goes on for a couple of miles, then it seems to engage properly and all is well for as long as my journey lasts. Then next time i get in same problem. Reverse gear seems to be fine though!

I would be vey grateful for any advice from this forum as i am unsure what the problem is.

Thanks in advance

A friend had this problem, it was a pump in the gearbox ~£280 fitted IIRC.

Have fun. These are fairly bomb-proof, but it's always worthwhile having your own code reader which can be found on the ebay. Common things are a gummy EGR valve, and mucky MAP and MAF sensors. All very easy fixes. And the 2.2tid is chain cam, no DPF to worry about.

Good Lord Peter.N., following your link i've just looked up the similar complete assembly for Mk 1 Yaris, some years ago a friend had one fail, Toyota wanted around £225 for the part alone, he found one at the local factor for just over £100, now available from similar suppliers to the Jazz hub for £30.

No wonder makers/main dealers don't want people going outside the dealer network.

It's a 2002 Passat estate with nearly 190,000 miles. Yep, worthless in theory. But I paid a couple of grand. And a couple of grand is a couple of grand.
I went to view it, and to be fair it has loads of receipts, it's been cared for, new brakes, 4 new good tyres, new timing belt, recently serviced by previous owner.
Went on a test drive with dealer (well he drove it as he didn't let people test drive) and he said it was spot on. Which is was in all fairness. No nasty bangs or anything.
We even tried the aircon and it seemed cool enough so I drove away happy, I admit.

However a couple of days later, I noticed the car didn't reach operating temperature. I was a bit peed off but thought if that's all I have to worry about it wouldn't be too bad. £224 later it was fixed.
I also noticed that in fact the aircon didn't work- now this peed me off quite a bit. It felt ok on the cold day we test drove it but clearly it was just the blower.

I've now found out that the window demister doesn't work either, which now is getting annoying. I'm no mechanic and need to pay a mechanic for every fault and by the time I've fixed these issues I would have been better off buying something much nicer.

I accept it's a very old car but with having to spend hundreds of pounds to fix it it now feels like a very expensive banger... I just don't really know where to go with this.... Read more

My 2p-worth - I think a dealer who got £2K for a car which can only have cost him a fraction of that should be prepared to sacrifice a cut of his margin in fixing any problems, which I am sure he will have expected on a car with that mileage. Be resolute. But don't invest too much in any 'legal' process, which may be throwing good money after bad.

polo jenny

This car is fitted with alloy wheels 15 inch. Tyres fitted are Accelera 195.55.R15.85 marked XL - extra load. The ride on this vehicle is extremely hard and finds every small bump transmitted back to the body. The road noise is also very loud. Recommended tyre pressure suggests 32-34 psi. I have tried reducing this to 25 psi. but even then the ride is terribly harsh. Is this a problem with tyre wall flexibility or lack of i ? Would you recommend an alternative tyre ? This is not the Polo that everyone raves about !

I had a 2008 1.2 Polo for while, with the 15 inch alloys and I have to admit the ride felt fine to me. IIRC it had Michelin tyres all round and I certainly never felt the ride was hard.

Maybe the cheaper tyres/heavier diesel engine (and presumably heavier duty suspension to match) are making the ride hard?

as the odometer appears to have stopped working, l am led to belive that this is a simple light replacement, however in trying to access the dash, l have been unable to get the surround off? as it seems to have a fixing on the right hand side that absolutly refuses to come off?

Any suggestions - l had thought that l found an access point to a screw to this part of the dash, but have been unable to get it to work so am not sure if this was correct or not?... Read more

Hi
My BMW X3 needs a new engine. We have been totally ripped off by Direct Engines who have taken off with our old engine. We can hopefully get our money back from our credit card. I don't know who to trust or where to start. Please can somebody offer some advice.
