Subject to test drives, I am probably about to choose a 1.2 TSI powered Seat Leon as our next car. We do keep our cars for what these days seems to be a considerable length of time, certainly over 5 years. I am concerned that I am purchasing a potential timebomb in terms of future expensive failures, but this engine does seem to suffer less than other VAG petrol turbos from issues.

The other option is a 1.4 petrol Hyundai i30, but this is much less powerful and I don’t think will be as good a drive. Price is on it’s side though, and I do have back to back test drives planned for the weekend.... Read more

VAG have sold millions of cars fitted with the TSI since about 2005. In these there there have been some failures but they have mostly been in 1.4 twin charged examples.

I suspect that most of these issues have been brought on by the owners themselves. Look on any VAG forum, the owners of the cars are always boasting about the latest re-map they have had, some claim 240 bhp and 300 lbs of torque for a 1.4 with no other mods. This is going to cause problems at some time with an engine that started life pretty much as a tubo charged 1.4 122PS motor....

There's no radio code on the 207, the radio has the car's VIN coded into it.

The only thing to be aware of if you take off the battery is to do a BSI reset.

Hi, today my focus 1.6 tdci 2008 model came up with engine malfunction causing it to go into limp mode, now the dpf was removed over a year ago and had a new turbo fitted along with new oil feed pipes new banjo bolts and new oil pick pipe in the sump it also had an engine flush. All has been fine until todays limp mode, the aa came out but could not find any fault codes. I have just drove the car to the shop in limp but when I drove home it was out of limp mode and all power was back as usual. Do you think its suffering with faulty glow plugs or glow plug relay? Thanks in advance Darren Read more

Is not having a DPF part of the new UK MOT.

It is now. If a DPF was part of the factory fit equipment it must be present when the car is taken for an MOT.

Hello new to the forum so bear with me lol Recently bought a fiesta 1.4 tdci mk6 08 plate 43000 miles and its driving me mad When driving along the car can randomly loses all power for a second or two and then jump back into life. It seems to only happen when warm. Some times if caught with the clutch will cut out all together.

Had it to two garages hu have scanned for codes but found nothing and says there seems to be no fault, got advised to change the fuel filter and blank of the egr valve but the fault persists. Also tryed a additive for water in fuel but still no better been told to try an injector cleaner so that's the next step.... Read more

Your right buddy, similar problem to my newly purchased 08 1.4 TDCI, local garage couldn't read the code so took the car to my local Ford dealer, cost me nigh on £250 and still no answers. I took the car there to get quick answers because they have the proper kit right ? how wrong was I. As is the way loads of people are now telling me (after I've bought the thing!) that the 1.4 TDCI isn't a very good engine and they have lots of history with issues like this, (you'll be luckey to see 100000 miles out of it, was one comment) one guy told me he even scrapped his car due to mounting 'Tech' bills!!. How can a so called 'Tech' (as they call themselves these days) justify charging so much money and getting no where??? even you yourself say you start at £100??. It's very frustrating when there is all the modern equipment around, plug and play etc and you guys are still none the wiser than some old boy in a back street garage!....very very costly to jo public and very profitable to Ford dealer everywhere., I guess at the end of the day you can't beat a good old 'mechanic'.

Please let me throw this in as a reply! :...

My 09 reg 2010 model Freelander 2 has developed the dreaded rear diff noises at 70,000 miles.

A local (and very good) independent Land Rover specialist has said it needs a Land Rover exchange diff at a cost, including fitting, of £840 + vat. They say it's not worth taking the diff apart to replace components as they've found in 8 out of 10 cases it needs more than the simple fix that Land Rover says is required and ends up costing more than just replacing the whole diff in the first place.

My local Land Rover dealer says they have fixed quite a number of vehicles with this problem and never needed to fit a whole replacement diff. They say they will strip down the diff and replace the required components at a cost of £630 including vat.

So the difference between these two is about £380!

Which one should I believe and go for? I'd be grateful to hear other forum user's experiences.

Thanks

Everything appears to be a weakness on land rovers. Two large agents in my city have given up on them on gone onto Volvos and Ford only products there reasoning was they could not make a profit on them or keep there hard won customers happy .

How would that help - the Ford EUCD platform is used by Ford Galaxy, Mondeo, S-Max, Volvo S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70, S80 and LR Freelander 2 - they all share transmissions and diesel engines and all major systems.

Yes, you'll need to buy a couple of litres but essentially they've all been the same on Fords since the BC boxes of the 1980s - round plug at front somewhere (these days hidden by control cable mechanism) needing an allen key and fill to level.

Ensure the car is level also if you have a sloping drive or have it on stands....
