Peugeot 308 - Peugeot 308 automatic gearbox - dkemp

Hi people.

Apologies if this is a double post but I can't see any sign of my original post.

The problem cocnerns an '08 Peugeot 308 and its gearbox, which from a quick web seach appears to be nothing new.

The initial problem was a 'jerk and clunk' going from first to second and occasionally show up a 'depolluter faulty' or such icon. The regular mechanic said this was a job requireing replacement of the gearbox for two grand. It wasn't a big problem affecting usability of the car and only occurred occasionally.

Several months later the problems became worse with a 'gearbox faulty' and a flash 'S' and 'snowflake' symbol (so the sports and ice modes for gearbox). The car becomes sluggish. The Peugeot dealer repalced the transmission fluid and (I believe) the filter. The problem is continuing and it is back off down to the dealer.

It is annoying that a car which is six years old and we've onyl had for three years has this level of problem, particularly since there were no problems with the earlier version of the same make.

Any helpful ideas?

I'm afraid I can't offer any suggestions. There are a number of issues with the 308 that have been ironed out of the new version. It was the same with the early 107s and 307s.

Worth bearing in mind if you're looking at a late model 307 and are thinking of spending a bit extra to go for the 307.

It's a French car built by workers with a "lassez faire" attitude to build quality. That is when they can be bothered to work a full 35 hour week less time for random strikes and throwing their hands up in the air because it's some elses fault.

If you want to buy a 3 year old car and keep for another 3 years without to much trouble best go Japanese or Korean.

My only suggestion...apart from avoiding satans gearbox (presume this is an automated manaul) like the plague...is to search out PSA car forums and search intently for similar faults and hopefully cures, similar dreadful box used in Citroens too so there should be plenty of threads to peruse...even Toyota can't get these boxes right.

Its too specialised for a forum like this IMO, and to be fair most posters here avoid these types of box unless they only keep the cars whilst under makers warranty and get shot the moment it expires.

Please update us though if you would, be good to have some references for the future, best of luck getting a fix...pretty damning really when a mechanic just says shove another gearbox in and the cars still almost new as far as i'm concerned.

Cris_on_the_gas, you clearly know nothing. A quick Google tells me that its assembled in Russia, China, Indonedia and Argentina as well as France. So are you going to make lazy racial slurs against all these countries too?

As for "not much trouble" with Japanese just Google "Honda recall", "Nissan recall" or any of the other marques and see all the serious dangerous problems they've left the assembly line with.

A friend of mine works for Honda and even he doesn't recommend the new Civic, suggesting the model before.

Hi dkemp,

Do you have any updates on this post?

I also own a Pug 308 (THP SE Automatic) 2009 model and have only owned for 6-months, 45,000 miles on clock!! A few months back I had the same problem. When cold the car jolted from first to second gear badly and sometimes was a bit juddery when changing gears, this stopped once the engine temperature did rise. I took this to a garage who have referred me to a gearbox specialist!!! I am now debating whether to take out a warranty and get fixed in month or so time (making sure warranty covers this fault!) or if to just cut my losses and part ex for a different motor?
