Check the cambelt and timing, I suspect a broken belt or jumped teeth...
Our car is just over 2 months old having bought from new. At times it will not go into reverse gear, baulks. Difference between in gear and not is so slight it often results in grating. Has anyone else noticed this. We had a 2009 1.2 litre from new and that was fine Read more
It's simple, don't disengage the forward gear until the car has stopped, keep clutch depressed and select reverse if there are no faults with the clutch then reverse will engage quietly. In the days when cars had no synchromesh on first or reverse to engage first quickly without crunching we always selected second or at least pulled the gear lever against the second gear synchro and then went into first. Those whose Jaguars had Moss gearboxes and could drive properly learnt this and had no problems.
Our Ford Focus '09 1.8 petrol has developed a fault or two.
Been out with it today and its started flashing up a warning to say the key has not been detected, the key was in the car, it didn't cut out.....just gave us the warning every 10 mins.... Read more
Update:
A technician showed up, told us that there are (quote) "three panels underneath where water gets in a fuse board"........"its probably that"......loaded the car up and took it away....
I am still waiting for my replacement dipstick so cant accurately measure oil level. How much oil do i need in my 2004 1.4 tdci as its getting an oil change tomorrow? I have a 4l can but know it doesnt need that much Read more
I'd wait. Seems quite unlikely your need for an oil change is urgent.
Er...unless you've got bits of ground-up dipstick circulating in your engine.
My clutch has been shuddering slightly on take off. No clutch slip, but the pedal has been quite stiff too. It's done 68,000 miles. (5,000 of which are mine, having owned it for a year now)
When I bought the car last year, there was no sign of any shuddering, but in the last 6 months I'm now aware of it.
So it seems this is an early sign of clutch wear. As confirmed by my dealer.
My question is, if the DMFlywheel looks to be ok (after the garage has had a look at it), should I be happy at just getting the clutch replaced alone?
I was told by the tech that if the DMF isn't damaged, then there's no point in spending the £600 or so for the part alone to replacie it, as it should be fine.
I just thought that due to the high cost of labour to get to the DMF, is it false economy not to replace it as a matter of course, or are they reliable if the clutch hasn't affected it?
Sure, I'd sooner save £600, but don't want to be paying large for another strip down to replace the DMF in a short while.
I'm not sure if the flywheels "wear out" natrually or not, if there is no damaged caused to them otherwise? Read more
Just to finish this thread..
The DMF was damaged (signs of heat and tiny fine cracks), so it was replaced too....
Recently bought a 01/2011 made F10 520d SE with 90K on the clock, so far really happy with it. Its a Manual car, not an auto.
Car seems to have been serviced regularly and had 4 main dealer services. Last service was done at 85K in January 2014. Ideally, I want to keep the car for a while.
Had an Audi A3 before this, so new to large BMWs & diesels..
I’m after some advice on what should I watch out for? Anything I should change/service now as a precaution? Any known faults on this model?
1) Timing chain issue, as I’m new to diesels will I be able to notice the noise?... Read more
Thanks, new things I have learned about the turbo.
My gitrlfriends 207 SW 1.4 petrol is now four years old and has coverered 43K.
Can anyone advise when the belt change is due as I have lost faith in advice from the Main Dealer after charging £500 for a service and then calling to say the pads needed changing at an extra cost.... Read more

I recently traded my car in for a replacement vehicle. The trader we dealt with was very professional and being in the trade myself, but this time on the other side of the fence, was something my wife and I really respected.

I agree with the others - he has no legal case against you. Did the car make that noise from cold when you had it? If not, you needn't even have a conscience about it. This may well not be the first time he's tried this one on.
40 days ago i was cruising along and felt a brief loss of power a few times. Over the next few miles heading home it got worse, was flashing EAC FAIL on the dash and i struggled to get the speed up on the 60mph A road.
I limped into the village garage who changed the fuel filter - no joy. I took it into town to get it on to a machine to observe live data. They told me they were getting low pressure from the pump and that it needed replacing - perhaps the injectors too. So, i got a 2nd hand pump, had it fitted elsewhere, new timing belt, new starter motor as that packed up too - no joy, exact same problem (having thought it had been resolved though, the mechanic took it in for its MOT which it sailed through). It then went to another garage to be put on the machine. He then said air flow meter was coming up and throttle position sensor was worth looking at. So, its had a new pedal because that has sensors in it, and its had another air flow meter (MAF Sensor) - no joy, excatly the same! I've disconnected several connections and used contact cleaner - no joy. The mechanic is now scratching his head. All of this has taken over 6 weeks.... Read more
The wifes 2004 fiesta 1.4 tdci was showing eac fail and in limp mode.
i was reluctant to start chucking money at it and replace every part as many others have so i did a bit of reading on forums.
the front lower engine mounting was also wrecked so the assumption was the engine movement had damaged wiring, so hopefully a cheaper fix.
the garage was reluctant but we agreed to start with the engine mount. I spoke with the mechanic and told him my thoughts, and when i went back later the mount was done and he had found a broken wire were the crankcase had rubbed and broke the wire.
he had just out the car back on the computer and it still showed the eac fail on the dash.
one of the faults showed as fuel rail connection, so he followed the wires and found another broken wire behind the air filter box.
this was repaired and on restart the eac fail no longer showed and the car revved and drove perfectly.
An old thread but might be the answer to my problems. How many modules in the head lining and where are they located?. My dab breaks up all the time and drops signal
