Hi Folks
Had my clutch changed about six weeks ago by a retired mechanic whom I've used before; thus far, he's never let me down.
After a round trip of about 600 miles on the new clutch, I happened to notice oil on the driveway; or what I thought was oil. I took a look underneath and immediately below the gearbox end of the nearside driveshaft, on the bottom of the transmission was a quantity of fluid, which again I assumed was oil. I rang my mechanic and told him; he said he'd have a look, and meantime I wiped the transmission clean. Couple of days later he came along, had a look and announced that the stuff on the driveway was grease from the driveshaft which had burned off on my long journey, and that after all this excess grease was gone there would be no more leaks; but to keep an eye on it anyhow.
Week or two later and I'm still getting the occasional drip of what, to my untutored eye looks like oil, and thinking maybe this needs further attention.
Question: is it feasible that the leaking stuff might, indeed be grease? He tells me that he would have replaced the transmission fluid with whatever was in the box prior to the change of clutch, probably with stuff which is red (MTX?); so it can't be that, and it certainly isn't in an area where one might expect engine oil. Could it be that the driveshaft oil seal is leaking, and if so does the Focus take another type of transmission fluid that to all intents and purposes looks just like oil?
Slightly perplexed...not sure how to proceed. Read more
I've just bought a 2012 Mondeo Titanium X, with the 1.6T petrol engine (replacement for my 2002 Mondeo Ghia). It's lovely, but the ride seems a bit harsh. The wheels are 235/45 R18. My old Mondeo had 205/55 R16 and the ride was gentler. My questions are (a) were those the standard wheels, or an option, or an after purchase replacement, (b) could I change the wheels to 16 or 17 inch, (c) if so, what woul dbe the pros and cons of that?
All advice gratefully received. Thanks. Read more
Having one of these awful cars I can say without a doubt that changing the tyres will make it so much softer. Not great, but much better than new. But be careful, a set of Goodyear, for example, will make it very hard again.
Hi,
I have recently bought a Mitsubishi Delica, now I know its old car 18 years, but the bodywork is in good nick and it runs well. The dealer I bought it from advertises as a specialist in this type and it came with a 12 month MOT with no advisories.... Read more
Being a Japanese import with much lower mileage than equivalent European car of same age Im willing to take a chance, and would do again. Yes I would check better, there were other problems in my life which distratced me at the time.
Moral of story-Concentrate on one thing at a time !...
hi all, having trouble with the above car, central locking is faulty, will lock once with key, wont unlock, and wont respond with button on door, all fuses are sound and relay makes 'click' like its working, i have changed PDM module, same issue, they can't both be faulty? also foglamps dont work, fuse is sound, new bulbs, keep getting annoying message on dash telling me so, and thus blocking out OBC info. Also the blower only works on full, i was certain this was resistor pack and changed it, but no difference! WTF is going on? please help Read more

659.. Thank you for the reply and the thoughts there, that has given me some food for thought.
I will be paying attention to the torque setting on reassembly, the 20deg will hopefully be suffice. Always a worry when dealing with this area of the engine....

I have a strange problem with my 98 laguna 2.2dt, the car starts well, drives fine on the flat and has plenty of power when you put your foot down, the problem starts when I go to climb the mountain to my house, within about 500 yards the temperature shoots up and the overheat light comes on, the radiator fans kick in as they should but it's still not enough to lower the temperature, I end up having to pull over and wait until the temperature on the gauge goes down to about halfway before I set off again, 500 yards later I have to stop again this goes on until I finally make it home after about 5 stops, there's a smell of hot coolant when I stop with a small whisp of what I assume is steam coming from the reservoir cap but no other obvious signs of leaks.
I have a list of thing's to check including head gasket, EGR valve, turbo, waterpump and I also wonder if it might be an airlock after a coolant change, although it's an old car it's in good condition with lowish milage and is normaly problem free.... Read more
mystery solved, the head gasket's gone.
I was bleeding the cooling system yesterday and started the engine without putting the res cap back on. exhaust smoke out of the cooling res straight away, not much but enough to tell me what's happening....
VW Audi and any VW group car like Skoda will use one of the Quattro systems, so basically will all work about the same based on type i.e. full time x4 or differential. Remember tyres have a massive affect on driving in snow and the wet, maybe more than the x4 drive. In snow my BMW 320d with summer try was the most scary cars to drive and with winter tyres a near jeep!
BMW are basically rear wheel drive cars and nearly all VW/Audi/Skoda are front wheel cars by nature. So VW basically have system that make the rear have drive and BMW have systems that make the cars front wheel powered....
I picked up this car only a month ago, it's under warranty but I need a little help. It starts fine, runs well too for the most part. The trouble is that when I'm driving around either locally or on a run, when I accelerate (usually between 30to 50 mph) the engine feels really sluggish, as if blocked and there is black smoke blowing out of the exhaust. After a short while the sluggishness goes and so does the smoke. Anyone got any ideas? Read more
I'll give Stubby a shout and tell him to look at this thread.
After having some routine work done on my car i can now smell fumes inside coming though the air vents.
I had the car serviced, and fitted a new alternator and battery, before this there were no fumes.... Read more
Thanks for that, the 2nd garage managed to get the plug out without taking the head gasket off.
Might change the oil again and see how that works out.
Thanks, Peter.
