I have a Peugeot 407 2007 model that uses petrol. Recently it started showing Depollution system faulty, ESP/ABS faulty. I read on the net that eolys fluid can be used to solve the problem on a 407 diesel engine. Pls I want to know, can this fluid also be used on my petrol engine 407? Read more
First time poster so hope this is in the right place :)
We want to start running a family car. Last time I ran a car regularly was 7 years ago and it was an inherited old boxy micra so this is really all very different. Had a few refresher lessons and I think I'm as good to go as I'm going to get without having a car and driving regularly again. Car will probably be used for weekly shopping trips, occasional runs across the city, fortnightly runs to the countryside and a longer trip with motorway driving about every other month.
Saved up 4k (to include insurance, parking permit, car seats etc) so we have about 3k to spend on a car (test drove a nissan note the other day as an example). However, my FiL has suggested that we get something for about 1k and have plenty of spare cash incase something goes wrong or to have the money for my husband to learn to drive. Bit worried about reliability - I don't want to break down on the side of the motorway with two preschoolers in the back - but that's a risk with any car really, used or not and I reckon about 1/3 of the cars I see running about are an 02 plate or earlier.
Was looking at a 1.6 petrol focus or a honda civic from about 2002, but it was suggested that I pick up a diesel mk3 mondeo. On paper, the car tax is the same and the insurance is only a bit more expensive (less than £100/year). Room for 2 car seats and a passenger in the back and a much bigger boot for all the random tat we seem to carry around these days. I reckon I can learn to park something bigger with a bit of practice.
However, I am unsure about running a diesel as I've heard they're only good for higher mileage drivers and they cost a fortune to repair. But I've also heard that a well maintained diesel engine will run 'forever'. I've been thinking on it and googling and I am still nowhere near a conclusion so I figured I would get some more opinions.
Any advice? Should I spend closer to 1k or 3k on a car and should I avoid diesels given how little I expect to be driving? Read more
Go for a note but stick with the 1.4 or 1.6 petrol engine

Only went to Russell Automotive Centre for the first time for just an MOT test. Very professionally run garage with helpful staff. My car passed first time and it only cost £29.95. This will now be my garage for all future repairs and servicing.
It was a very easy expirence for an old man like me so it worth sharing. ... Read more

My car has covered 36k from new. I had a misfire on Cylinder 1 which was first diagnosed as a coil pack. When this was changed it did not fix it so a compression test revealed there was a deeper problem. With the head off the piston had a piece missing from the top which looked like it had melted. Unfortunately this appears to have scarred the lining of the block. The independent garage have said I will need a replacement engine as the thickness of the block will not allow any rebore. I trust the garage and have inspected the engine. My beef is with VW , this is a DSG model and has not been thrashed by me since new. Will I have any claim against VW that you know off and is this a known problem? Thank you Read more
Thanks but the garage have said that the walls of the block are too thin for a rebore. Option of new block and extra labour or a recon engine. I'm pursuing the original dealer where I bought the car from new in the hope of some goodwill
So when will this revised Yaris be available to buy.....I am currently looking to exchange my Yaris. Read more
Probably will be. They introduced a new Tungsten Blue for the Auris, but as the development of the Yaris is a proper mid-life facelift, rather than an adjustment of specs (as in the Auris), think there will be a change in colour choice.
On moving my car this morning I noticed a small patch of leaked transmission oil. The RAC diagnosed the problem as a leak on the exit pipe of the oil cooler. They transported the vehicle to Nissan main dealer. I phoned to enquire progress and was informed that the vehicle was just out of three year warranty, they had repaired the pipe at the cost of £228 and a new unit would have cost £1000. There is no guarantee on their repair and the problem could reoccur without warning causing expensive damage to the transmission. I was surprised they had repaired it without giving me the choice of buying a new cooler. Is this leak a known problem with the Qashquai and should the cooler be replaced. Thank you Read more
Hello guys and gals need help with this company whom I hired car when I met with an accident in 2010 and my insurance company at that time Zurich told me that they have settled with Albany assistance for car hire fees (£1798) but now on 17th march received letter from Albany asking for that amount as they are saying I m liable for the charges and now going to start legal proceedings on me, I m with a different insurance company now and the car with which I was involved in accident is been scrapped so plz help me out will be very grateful for all advice. Have been spending sleepless night and too much stress now what to do? Read more
OP doesn't say he has has contacted them. A copy of " Zurich told me that they have settled with Albany assistance for car hire fees " should keep Albany quiet! 4 years seems a long time to wait to progress a 4 figure debt too!
Both my low beam headlights have gone off. I have checked fuses under bonnet and they are fine. The lamps were changed by Halfords 4 months ago. Any advice? Read more
Quite possible as Doc says - both bulbs could have blown. There's some rubbish on the market these days.

Im getting a problem where after starting the engine and driving away, the car lurches around quite badly for a short while, maybe 15 or 20 seconds, before it carries on driving fine. Im also getting an issue where, at 50/55 mph and above i reguarly lose power and have to remove my foot from the throttle and then put it back before I get any response from the engine and the car carries on driving.
Origionally I thought this issue might be due to a blocked fuel filter but as my mileage has tanked since I started having this issue I think I can rule it out. Tomorrow i will be checking for vacuum leaks around the engine and resitting the air filter/airbox as i think there may be an issue there. Is there anything else I should check? Read more
Its been about 5 or 6 days now since I changed the fuel filter and athe problem has resurfaced. Its not as bad when pulling off, but now I just let the car idle for a minute or so to stop it lurching around when pulling off. Could the ht leads be at fault here? Ive sprayed water over them and there was no change from the engine so the shrouding on the cables seems to be intact, but could the wires inside have deteriorated?

How did you get on? A good diagnostic will tell you what's causing both error messages to appear on screen.
