I had something similar. Turned out to be valve clearance. The bloke in the garage scoffed until it ate his feeler gauge.

Hi, I'll try and keep this short :-)

My Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi Mk2 keeps going in to limp home mode but showing no errors and appears to be OK after turning off and on the engine - but under load (e.g. up a hill) will go back in to limp home mode and kick out a cloud of smoke.... Read more

Hi there, I've been receiving conflicting advice on my Renault Trafic, and wondered if someone among you could help before I brave Renault customer service. When the van was bought, the salesman told us that the Trafic was chain driven, and consequently would never need a timing belt change. However, on a recent service, our mechanic recommended we get the timing belt changed soon. He definitely used the word 'belt' rather than chain...

An internet search has only turned up very conflicting advice on the subject.... Read more

2.0 Dci is chain driven. The 1.9 Dci is a belt.

A friend has recently had his Jaguar XF 3.0d serviced and the next day he got it back it started making a strange noise, described by him like "the tapet noise of an old car".

The AA picked up the car and took it back to the Jaguar garage in question, who then spent 4 days diagnosing it and replacing injectors, only to then tell him "the big end has gone" and he needs a new engine at a cost of £10k.... Read more

Its more likely DPF regeneration problems have diluted the engine oil.

Interesting comment - if this is the case it's highly unusual - the Jag engine has a good reputation and if properly serviced can last for a long time and over many thousands of miles....

The price difference between standard unleaded and premium (e.g Shell V power) locally is about 6%, so only worth the extra if mpg is increased by more than this amount.

Obviously some cars designed for higher octane fuel will go better, my question is not about acceleration/speed but mpg in normal driving. ... Read more

However, a friend of mine currently owns a large CC petrol engined 2004 Mercedes CLK in which his fuel econemy improved to 35 MPG and more from an averge of 22 MPG

Even better than the owner with a Corsa who got a 33% improvement. The Merc improved by almost 60%....

My Vectra slightly stutters when accelerating then when I take my foot off the gas to keep it steady at 50Mph or over it then goes into limp home mode.

I've noticed that it only comes on when engine revs are over 2k and when i restart the car, the cruise control doesn't work until the car has been switched off for a period of time.... Read more

We has a new stretch belt fitted at our local Ford dealers. Did it while we waited. Took less than 1/2 an hour, total cost was £44 including the belt and 2 coffees.

Not worth getting my hands dirty.

I promise this one will tax your grey matter more than radio code questions and bumping down kerb and pothole worries...;-)
