C220 CDi - Auto transmission problems - LoveMercs
Hi all

First time on this forum, so hello to all.

I have a C220 CDi on a W plate (2000). My problem is that the gears dont seem to engage properly, especially in the morning. When i start the car and put it in D, nothing happens. I depress the pedal and just get high revs, but no movement. Then it will move off really slowly. Then the gear seems to 'bite' and i jolt forward. Then it 'slips out' again. This goes on for a couple of miles, then it seems to engage properly and all is well for as long as my journey lasts. Then next time i get in same problem. Reverse gear seems to be fine though!

I would be vey grateful for any advice from this forum as i am unsure what the problem is.

Thanks in advance

Mark

I had a "V" plate 99 E class estate with developing a similar problem, in the morning, when the oil was cold. In the end I paid, knowing that it would either solve or make things worse(!) to have the gearbox emptied, flushed and refilled by an auto gearbox specialist. Thankfully it solved the problem. The transmission fluid had degraded to a point where it just wasn't effective when cold. The flush got rid of some rubbish too. Wasn't cheap. From memory around £280 8 years ago, but a hell of a lot cheaper than a new box.

I will get it done and post a reply to say how it went

Thanks again

Has it got a Valeo radiator? There was a problem with coolant mixing with the transmission fluid.

A friend had this problem, it was a pump in the gearbox ~£280 fitted IIRC.
