Just a quick question.

I understand the VW Passat and the Skodia Octavia are identical cars, apart from their shells and badges. If this is correct then why do manfacturers, in this case VW, make BOTH the Passat and the Octavia but sell the latter for around £5k less? What's the mindset behind this, or am I missing something?... Read more

Nothing wrong with a manual it's just more desirable on an MB to have one.

I use the car from time to time and I find the autobox superb and so far completely reliable....

For the past ten years I have run BMW 3 series all of them diesels. I have had no problems with any of the engines whatsoever!

With the adverse publicity about diesel emissions is it time to consider a petrol fuelled BMW when I change in the near future? Read more

Choice of engine type depends on what you want it to do.

I have had both and find ones with a turbo or two definitely provide me with what i need for towing, lots of torque and adequate power....

Hello, yesterday I bought a car from a dealership in my area. I have been interacting with several dealers whilst selecting the vehicle, in general spending quite a bit of time in particular with a Mini dealer, Audi dealer, and two or three different Fiat/Alfa dealers, before finding the right car (a near mint Giulietta).

What is interesting to me and the purpose of this posting is all the add on products they offer at time of sale closure. On principle, I have never purchase any such products and don't intend to now. To be totally fair, there was no sales pressure on me, but the sheer number of different "products" offered was rather a surprise.

What are the forums views on any of the follow:

  • GAP protection (I am buying on a PCP with about a 20% deposit), and I will be doing very high mileage (25 to 30K per year)
  • Tyre and alloy wheel insurance (up to 5 tyres replaced in the 3 year contract, not including wear and tear)
  • Cosmeitc Warranty Insurance
  • Diamond Bright / Superguard pain protection

I am considering GAP insurance which I have never bothered with before, but then I have never purchase on finance before, always cash. but I wondered what the forum advice would be on buying these products, (or not)... Read more

I refuse all of the add ons.

My thoughts on GAP are if I need it I am borrowing too much. I shouldn't be in a position of a car being worth less than I owe on it. And return to invoice GAP is merely a depreciation insurance - something else I really don't need....

Can anybody tell me what is wrong with the above window? It won't always lower at all via the switch, sometimes if I press the up position first it will lower. Also on raising it, it goes up half way, then goes back down again. It works fine, up and down using the key in the outside door lock. Read more

Can,t remember if this model has both one touch up and down as previous cabrio only had down.Could be a switch fault as this is a different circuit to the one operated from the door lock.

Hi all

I seem to have a problem with my sons corsa c 1.0cc, engine was running ok before I started work, just a bad timing chain rattle and signs of head gasket gone. cylinder head removed had it skimmed and pressure tested rebuilt engine with new gaskets and timing chain, on starting it run poorly with a sound of air being sucked in from inlet manifold I traced it to the square hole next to inlet port 3 I put my finger in the hole and engine idles 100 per cent. My Question is why is it drawing in air through there when it wasnt before. thanks Read more

Assuming inlet port 3 belongs to cylinder 3, the last one and always the one with most problems, the one furthest from from the oil pump, my answer is thus:

Probably EGR gone bad....

My partner sold his car on Sept 29th; he bought brand new and part exed his old vehicle. He sent off the Vc5 to the DVLA when he picked up his new car the next day. He lives about fifty miles away from the dealership he used.

Fast forward to today, and he has a PCN from a supermarket dated Oct 3rd. Someone either bought his old car very quickly or one of the dealership staff used the car. Nobody would have nicked it as it's a 12 year old Citroen. The mind boggles as to why anyone would park at a supermarket for that long anyway.

Suffice it to say, I don't believe he is liable under Popla but I would like to check this. I do understand that it depends on what the DVLA had as information when the parking company purchased the details, but they have processed this very rapidly and then waited nearly three weeks to send it.

Am I right about his lack of liability? Read more

Thanks guys. Will update the post with the outcome. You have confirmed what I reckoned but he does very little driving and he got a bit worried!

My mother bought a car from a garage with a 3 month warranty. After 2 months the big end went and she had it transported back the garage for repair. The owner said he would have a new engine fitted and loaned her a car in the meantime.

After a month, she got her car back. He told her to run it in, as it has a new engine, which cost him £3k but she immediately had to return it because the "new" engine leaked oil. He said he would have it fixed and return it. When she got it back it still leaked, so she took it to an independent garage to have a look at it. The independent garage said it was not a new engine, just a replacement and prepared a list of things wrong with it.... Read more

Thank you, that is helpful.

I am trying to establish the principal first and then the subjectivity of the seriousness of the faults as the second stage of the process....
