The switch is probably duff. A ballast resistor fault would give the opposite symptoms - it would only work on no4 and not on 1 to 3.

Hello,

I took delivery of a used Toyota Verso (09 plate) from a Toyota dealer last week (described by the salesman as "mint"!), and have since some issues.
The main one being that due a blocked air conditioning leak pipe, the car smelt unpleasant (suspicions were raised due to rusting present beneath the front seats.)
After inspection the carpet underlay was described as moist but not wet by the mechanic on inspection.
The smell was explained by bacteria caused by the damp issues.

They have rectified this with an antibacterial bomb which was activated with the air conditioning on while I waited at the dealership.
As I have two very young children, I am still a little concerned about the effectiveness of this treatment and was wondering if anybody had any experience of this?

I really don't want my kids breathing in bacteria etc if the treatment is flawed.

By the by, the other issues that have came to light were, heavily damaged wheel trim, which detached itself on the 50 mile drive to the dealer, missing aerial and inoperative cigarette lighters (confirmed damaged due to the damp issue) we have also noticed that the gears stick a little.

Thanks in advance

Hello,

Sorry about that- I thought that the Verso tag may be putting people off (as it's a relatively rare car)

If anybody knows of any other forums that may be worth a try, I'd be very appreciative. I've tried the Toyota Owners forum but that seems very quiet.

Kind Regards

Hello,

I am considering buying focus or avensis or c-max automatic. Few of the models are Seq Auto while order ones are Auto.

What is the difference between these two transmissions ? Also how different is CVT ? How do these different flavours of automatic transmission affect the driving, repairs, regular maintenance ?

About myself:
I am a first time buyer of car and looking for family car - hatchback + petrol + automatic + 1.6 or 1.8 engine. Car would be driven mostly on weekends and few long drives once a month.

Thanks for your time.

The big downside of the modern auto box whether its a Tiptroic, CVT or DSG is the cost of replacement which is often aroung the £5000 mark.

Whilst that's clearly true, it's also true that conventional torque-converter/planetary gear type of autoboxes, ie Tiptronic, have been made in such huge numbers over many decades that few give problems, still less have to be replaced, as a % of those built.

CVTs and DSGs are new in mass production and the chances of a problem/replacement are much higher....

Calling at my local independent the other day he showed me a Ford Ranger pickup which had a seized camshaft and potential £2600 of repairs. Apparently this had been seviced just once in 77000 miles - lady driver said "well it's a lease car, so it doesn't matter!"

Our 99 does it.

Easy enough to avoid or get around though.

I think the head gasket may have gone on my Chrysler Grand Voyager. It's a 2000(W) 3.3 petrol with gas conversion. Driving back from Dartford yesterday it overheated twice and I filled it with water both times. Checked once home for leaks but can see nothing coming out the bottom. Checked the oil cap and that looked OK but the dipstick looked very watery.

I did have an advisory for this a few years ago when I had a core plug leak fixed. I posted about it then and was told it is unlikely and could be the v manifold gasket (think that's right!?).... Read more

These engines do not take kindly to gas conversions lack of lubrication that is is found in petrol.

Peters summing up is spot on.

The 1.6 is underpowered. It may have had the wossanames thrashed off it and be knackered at that age, especially as none of its previous owners were planning to keep it any length of time. Listen for a rattly top end on cold start and walk if it has one. Also ensure that the timing belt has been replaced recently along with its pulleys and that that included the water pump as it's not a cheap job to have done.

No corrosion issues. Mechanically bulletproof, with the exception of gearboxes which die like flies. Check that the box finds all the gears smoothly with no balking or syncro problems and that there are no nasty noises from it. Getting at the box requires dropping the subframe, so this is another walk away issue. Odd noises from the suspension are almost invariably the antirollbar drop links and trivial to fix.
