I was just curious as to the reliability of the VAG 2.0 CR diesel unit currently fitted on a wide variety of cars.

I'm looking at examples of around 70k after 3 years. Providing I service it every 10k miles - How long have these engines been known to go on for? Anyone here own a high mileage one?... Read more

as most car companies are now run by accountants

Penny pinching isn't the fault of accountants but of customers always expecting a discount, but not wanting to compromise on spec. As much as buyers talk about appreciating quality, most of them will base their decision on what they can see. That means that what isn't seen gets scrimped on.

I am after a cheap estate to replace my battered V-reg Focus 1.8tddi. Been seeing quite a few of these 1.3 cdti Astra's coming up, mostly ex-fleet. They are coming in just under my budget and I fancy something a little newer than I currently have.

Will be driving about 60-70 miles a day, mostly stop start round town(basically using it as a small courier vehicle)... Read more

Also, does no-one else find the amount of (non-adjustable, in 'Life' spec) lumbar support excessive - like it's trying to push you off the front of the (already short-feeling) seat cushion?

And the steering wheel have thick spokes just where you'd actually prefer to get your fingers 'around' the rim?...

Lots of posts on the InterWeb about this. It's a common fault on the Fiesta 1.4Tdci. On mine, the fault was a crack in a plastic fuel pipe near to the priming bulb and this in turn was caused by the pipe vibrating because the priming bulb was not firmly fastened to its bracket (it is now). As I've pointed out on other discussions about this, I was surprised that there was no obvious fuel leak. With the engine running, the fuel pressure seemed to hold the crack in the pipe closed, but when parked up, air would get in and the fuel would run back to the tank. A local garage sorted this out by using readily available standard size fuel pipe which is slightly wider than the specialised pipe fitted by Ford. He cut the cracked pipe at the crack and slid on the standard size pipe which he first dunked in a mug of hot water, then sliding the other side of the cut pipe into that. Well, the car's done two years and 20K miles since then and the repair is good! Another cause which I've read about is one make of fuel filter where the welded plastic join around the 'lid' of the filter (where the two nozzles are) starts to leak, and again, air getting in whilst parked causes the fuel to run back to the tank.

One other thing... There's a tap at the bottom of the fuel filter. It's to run off a bit of diesel if there's a chance of water in the fuel. (Water sinks below oil). Make certain that the tap is tight, because if you open it with the engine off, you'll just hear a gurgle as the fuel runs back....

I have found an 08 plate S40 2.0D SE with 49k on the clock, 1 owner and full Volvo Service History. Car looks clean and looked after so just wanted to ask opinions about their reliability, servicing costs and general performance. I have never had a Volvo before so really am going into this blind. Previous owner was a company but not a lease company and, as above, the car looks and drives well.

Engine is the 136BHP unit (I think it's a Ford engine but not 100% sure?).... Read more

I've had several Volvos. 240,s 34,0 480s 940, 740, V70. Go th the main dealer only as a last resort. Any good indie can service volvos at a fraction of the cost. They are good cars and have given great service over many years.

The mileage odometer on my son's 2007 Grande Punto started flashing this morning, anybody know why and if there is a simple fix for it?

Thanks,... Read more

True, about 6 months ago we had power steering (amongst other) problems and the battery was replaced, since then the power steering has worked fine.

Seems like DPFs are the bain of a diesel vehicle reading some of the recent posts, mine is another sorry tale to add to the list, and I'm wondering if something more needs to be done as a large number of forums seem to have a long list of issues with these. Now I'm no expert, but our Seat needed the DPF to be replaced as it was full and couldn't be regenerated. Nearly £1000 later, new DPF, the light came on again, managed to clear it out using the usual advice. Few days later, light on again and into limp mode. Back to garage, got everything reset and a new sensor. Again the DPF warning light is on, long or short journeys without warning. With this many problems, and across multiple manufacturers there's a bigger issue out there......any thoughts?

The DPF has been with us since roughly 2008 and the cars I see are just out of warranty so 2008/9 models only and we are getting one call after another day in day out about DPF issues, one was an A1 with 5K miles on that had suffered a small impact and been driven around a car park for a few months, the DPF was clogged solid and I only just managed to carry out a forced regeneration and even then the ash level in the filter is equivalent to an average car with 100K miles on. A large number of calls are from people who have had the DPF removed and the ECU reprogrammed to suit; I am trying to sort two like this at the moment with serious running issues. The DPF is going to become the biggest nightmare in modern automotive memory.

We have a Mk5 1.9TDI, and lately the heater doesn't seem to be blowing any hotter that lukewarm (with and without the air-con engaged). Coupled with the this, when you open the coolant expansion tank cap, there a sudden whoosh of pressurised air, and the collant level rises by about 2cm!

Could there be air in the coolant system which is causing both of the above?... Read more

Is it ejecting coolant from the filler cap or overflow pipe? If so sounds like head gasket leakage I'm afraid.

Could be, but it could just be air in the system....

I have been having a problem starting the engine of my diesel Focus for a few months now which is getting progressively worse. On cranking the engine it turns over rapidly but does not start. On occasion I have kept the key turned and 50% of the time it will eventually start but takes a long time. Once started it runs fine and feels as smooth and powerful as the day I bought it over four years ago. There has been no increase in fuel consumption either. There is not set pattern to when this happens it can be with a cold or warm engine or when it hasn't been used for 24hrs or just been on a long run.

My local garge has looked at it on the last two services (they say!) and said they cannot find any faults and have said 'it is just one of those things' which will be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The car has had a full service every 12 months/12.5k with fuel, oil, air filters changed each time even though the fuel and air filter does not need changing each time! Fuel treatment has also been added at each service.... Read more

I have the exact same problem with my 15 plate 1.5 focus Titanium Diesel.

At times and its very random when it decides to do this press the start button and it either just cranks but won't catch on or press the start button and it cranks and displays a call service error message on the screen. Last time no error message....

Hi

I am looking at 2 Beemers,

One is a 118d manual SE with quite a lot of extras including Start/Stop, Pro Sat Nav, heated seats etc, but missing a few things I really want, most importantly Blue Tooth preparation for pairing a mobile phone to it

Other is a 120d M-Sport Auto, again with lots of extras, mainly the same as the above plus Bluetooth prep, and a few other things too (like memory seats), the Bluetooth prep is important to me, but so is fuel economy and it doesn;t have the start/stop

All the reviews says the 118d is the one to go for, but this is a private purchase, not company purchase, so Road Tax is issue not company car tax.

How do they compare with respect to Insurance Group, Road Tax for private user?

Real world fuel economy register shows very little difference between them.

Other issue is the sports suspension versus the standard suspension, but only I can answer that one myself based upon personal preference.

Thoughts?... Read more

Tried both before buying the 118D. Both were manual and the 120D did have a bit more performance but in the real world the 118D is well quick enough. Ours is the 143bhp model with stop/start.

Road tax on 118d manual is £30 PA, on 120d auto its £130. Official combined on 118d is 62.8 mpg, we get 48 mpg approx. The 120d auto has a combined of 52.3, expect to get 40 mpg max....
