Focus 1.8 TDi coughs when starting. The colder it is the more it coughs and the longer it takes to start. Main agent diagosed bad battery but a new heavy duty Exide hasn't cured it.
Glow plugs should take a total of 32 Amps. They appear to be taking 80. It suggests they are open circuit. On board (milometer) OBD givesa none amongst a load of hex codes.
I don't know where to go from here. I'd appreciate any ideas especially as the main agent failed.

Once started it runs perfectly and fuel consumption is the same as ever Read more

I think I have proved that it isn't one of the glowplugs having failed.

I've isolated each one, measured it with a Ohmmeter having checked that agains a 1 Ohm resistor. I have meassured the current into each one when connected to the battery....

After a small bump, the theory is that the red button (near the suspension leg) is pressed to reset the fuel pump and the car should start again. I have tried this on mine but all I can hear when I turn the key is the pin of the starter motor firing, and then nothing else? Has my starter gone or is it something else?

Do the dash lights dim when you use the starter. This could be just a flat battery, battery connection or the earthing point for the negative lead. Regards Peter

It is that time of the year when drivers have to deal with an abundance of children walking to and from school. To avoid accidents, drivers should take more care and be extra cautious and alert especially while driving around schools. Parents should keep certain rules in mind while walking and driving their kids to school. It is always advisable to walk your child to the bus stop and back.

If you ride to school in a school bus, you should always be on time. You should stay in your seat and avoid pushing and shoving. Teen drivers should take extra precautions while driving to school and back. Talking and texting on the cell phone while driving should be strictly prohibited. Any type of earphones should not be used while driving. A very simple and important safety driving tip is to remember to pay full attention. Many accidents occur due to driver inattention and carelessness like applying makeup, changing the radio station and focusing on other things rather than vehicles and pedestrians in the area. Holland is normally ahead of the UK.

In Holland they have dispensed with road safety as we know it and have the cars driving through the school playground, or so I learn from radio 4....

My car has poor performance and economy of less than 25mpg even when driven carefully. The engine heats up very quickly. all these factors point to a collapsed catalyst/exhaust blockage. Does this seem plausible? If so, how can I check the cat? I have put my hand over the exhaust outlet while the throttle is blipped aand it seems like not a lot of exhaust gas is coming out.

My family and I moved to Berlin in August 2012. I have an old Porsche 911 that I would like to bring out to Germany for the duration of our stay (2-3 years). I have spoken with two insurance companies, both of whom have informed me that I cannot insure the car for overseas use for typically longer than one month and that if I want to keep the car for longer than this in Berlin I must re-register it in Germany. If necessary, I am happy to keep the car in the UK each winter, with the car living in Germany for approx. 7 months each year. I have known several people from other parts of Europe maintaining the original registration of their cars whilst on extended stays in the UK. What is the position on this? Will I be able to get insurance in the UK for long term use of my car in Germany whilst maintaining my car's UK registration? Read more

Registering in Jair-many would mean you'd have to take the notoriously tough (I think it's called the ) TUV test (like an MOT).

And probably have to sort out the headlights for driving on the right…

Hello, I wonder if anyone can offer me some advice?

My Audi's battery is running flat after 3 or 4 days of not being used. I've checked the voltage (12.88 v) and removed the neg and am getting a zero reading when testing amps. When the engine is running I'm getting over 14 v... Read more

No modern car has a zero parasitic drain.Your meter connection is correct,so iI would suspect the fluke is at fault .Don't forget you need to move the red plus lead into a different connector on the meter for amps/mA reading.I would expect a draw of between 60 and 100 mA after approx 30 mins stand time to allow for all the ecus to shut down.hth

All,

It's company car replacement time and I am such a ditherer it takes me ages to make a decision.

Audis on my list are A5 sportbacks (3.0 and 2.0 Tdi multitronics FWD not quattro) and A6 Saloons (S-Line and SE Multitronic 2.0 Tdi).

Auto is a "must have" for me.

So I'm deciding between A5 and A6.

I have a young family, 2 girls under 5, and a wife who can't pack light. But I do have a roofbox.....

I do circa 30,000 miles pa so comfort is important. Any views on the sports suspension that comes on S-Line Audis is most welcome. A previous (2004) Audi was returned as it was just too uncomfortable but I've been told that Audis have softened since then.

Opinions on if the A5 Sportback is large enough/comfortable enough by those that either own or have driven one is particularly welcome.

I'll no doubt go for a 520d SE but the A5 looks much nicer and the A6 S-Line is better equipped so I'd like to keep my options open at ths stage.

Thanks

PS - I have a 5 day test drive booked with an A6 S-Line booked from the end of this week so that should prove interesting. Read more

Maybe the answer with Audis is to go for the SE with softer suspension and smaller wheels, and then add on the extras that you actually want.
