I need to change the oil on my car and am increasingly appalled by the prices charged by garages to carry out a pretty routine task. I do not have the facility to drain the oil through the sump so have been looking at one of the vacuum/suction devices which uses a tube down the dipstick.

Are they any good and are there any downsides to using them?... Read more

I use a Pela pump. If you do it properly you get as much oil out as draining. The new oil on my car remains clean for quite a time.

Stop worrying.

Hello All,

the time has come to replace the rear tyres on my Corsa. The local garage is qutoing £77 all in for Kumhos which they seem to have a high opinion of. I dont want to spend £100+ to get a brand such as michelin or Good years but equally so i dont want the cheapest tyres out there. ... Read more

As far as I'm aware that is the original tyre size. It came like that a
Albeit as a second hand car but from a vauxhall garage and it has the vauxhall
Alloys that seem to be fairly std on corsa d 's judging by the amount of them I see.

I did think they were quite big wheels for the car, but have no reason to think they are non standard

Quick word of warning I was chatting to our main customer today who has a small fleet of 8 Peugeot 308 estates. 4 have now had major problems with the gear box. Its well established the 307 was a dog when it came to reliability, it seems the 308 gear box may be letting the mid Peugeot hatch down again. Read more

The difference being, Peugeot's default response is to blame the way the clutch has been used.
Some cumstomers may buy into the argument and fund the new clutch where the truth is the clutch is not up to the job and fails prematurely.
Especially fleet managers where vehicles ae used by lots of different drivers may buy into the argument.

308 is a car to be avoided.

Do garages make any money just from MOT test fees.

Say the MOT charge is 40 pounds. I presume it takes about an hour.... Read more

< It's just how they were designed. In fact I read that someone had a (just under) 3 year old Corsa fail it's first MOT on it and so tried to get it fixed under warranty. When the dealership jacked up a couple of new cars they had, They all had the same movement. >

Funny, that. I remember a tale about jacking up Vauxhalls a few decades back. Then it made the screen pop out, on more than one car ...

Hi, I have a Peugeot 307 (2002) 2 litre petrol automatic. My problem is as follows.

On a cold start (first thing in the morning) motor start fine, after approx 20 secs the motor then starts to chug as though it is running on 3 cylinders. At this time the engine dash light comes on and an anti- pollution fault and catalytic convertor fault message are displayed on the screen. ... Read more

Thank you for this excellent reply. I will try your suggestion with the oil to see if it has any effect. My own mechanic was clueless, which given the odd nature of the problem I totally understand.

I just recently had my car serviced at a VW centre, after all their absolute must recommended changes, I was advised to replace the left front tyre, horn replacement and also cambelt replacement based on history but wasn't necessary at that point.

VW suggest that the belt needs to be replaced at every 40,000 miles or 4 years whichever comes first and at the centre, all they kept telling me was to check through my history. If it hadn't been done then get it done asap and if it had been then to wait until the 4th year to which it's due again (or 40,000 miles). They quoted me £579 for the work which I declined at the time as I don't have that sort of money on top of the £632.30 I already paid for the service and the recommended work.... Read more

The independent garage is correct there are TWO belts, One from crank shaft to a cam shaft no 1 and another behind it between the two cam shafts. They both need changing using a full kit including all pulleys (plastic - and they break!). Change the water pump, antifreeze and aux belt(s) at the same time as hardly any extra labour required. The pulleys regularly fail on these - mine went at about 56k (interval was 110k then!) fortunately it just made a bad noise, didn't damage the engine and it was fixed under warranty (I did 20k a year at the time).

On my 2001 Skoda Octavia 1.416V 75bhp (same engine) my local independent (Beverley, East Yorks) recently did the whole job for £280 inc BOTH belts kits, water pump & antifreeze. They even found that last time the dealer had done it they had mis-fitted the water pump and it had been leaking slightly past the gasket for years. Water level never dropped though!

Hi all,

On Saturday I changed the front brake discs and brake pads on my Peugeot 107. After I completed the job, I took it for a spin and it was all fine. I drove it on Sunday to the shop and again it was fine to drive.... Read more

And how long was the spanner then. Many wheel nuts are 100/120 Nm and you are not pulling that with a spanner and two fingers. If the OP thinks he tightened the wheel bolts/nuts correctly then I suggest he rechecks the caliper bolts with a Torque wrench ASAP and before he drives the car again. Regards Peter
