Hello,

Yesterday, I bought a lovely 5dr 2003 ford focus 1.8 (petrol). It had worked perfectly on the test drive and passed its MOT fine.
However, when collecting it, it initially would not start. Turned out to be the fuel pump fuse which had blown (called out the AA) - possibly because the fuel level had got so low.... Read more

In retrospect, if I had replaced the filter at 60,000m as recommended, it might have lasted longer. Mea culpa.

John F, I was truly shocked to read that from you!...

I have offered £560 and waiting for a reply to my text message.

I’m just off now, cycling 25 miles, to look at a T registration 1298cc with 70,000 on the clock.

Just to finish up my problem was indeed the lift pump. Fitted it earlier this afternoon and car has been running like a dream. I am a happy man although it was a nasty job to do!!!

I've just had the warning light come up because the tank was empty so I added 1ltr of fluid. However the laptop codereader that I have access to did not have the facility to extinguish the light. If I drive with the light showing, will it still inject fluid as required until I can get it to a garage with the appropriate equipment? It would be really helpful to put off any more expense for a couple of months! Also, what is the capacity of the tank? It seemed as if it would take more; presumably once the light is out I can add more at any time, but will just have to go through the fuel filler flap wagging procedure!

I look forward to your clarification - Haynes say "take it to a garage" in glorious technicolour. Read more

The manual (unofficial) procedure is only of limit use for when/if a computer is not available and when/if applied can result in a "Engine Systems Fault" message, which may mean you get another problem to deal with (DON'T USE IT IN OTHER WORDS).

The offical method is : Refill with EOLYS176 and reset according to TIS service instructions - 1.6/2.0 Duratorq-TDCi with EURO IV Emission and DPF, if applicable (LTS 23 563 4)

The good news is all Ford Focus Euro V models do not use Eolys fluid nor do they have an additive tank.

"confused old codger" - as "elekie&a/c doctor" mentioned, make sure your garage has the capability to carry out the correct procedure.

The Ford handbook states the jacking points are denoted by the indentations in the sill.Well i'm not blind and i know roughly where they should be, but, for the life of me i cannot see them. Are they being obscured by some coating/rustproofing,any ideas? Read more

MrEckerslikefromRamsbottom

It's the half-moon cut-outs in the welded seam beneath the sill, one near the front and another near the back of the sill to which they're referring. As this method of jacking is now becoming common across manufacturers, I was pleased to see that scissors jacks which you can get for a tenner or less from car-parts shops now have an offset slot in the jacking pad, to locate them correctly under the sill.

Apart from the obvious way od doing regular oil changes and trusting that the garage have used the correct oil, is there any simple litmus paper type test for checking for diesel contamination in engine oil? Read more

This tests surface tension. Another version uses an old jam jar filled with water and allow a drop of oil to fall onto the surface. It should form a distinct blob and not disperse. i didn't recommend this because even one drop of oil makes a surprising amount of mess and you can't use the jar for anything else!

With a little practice, over-aged oil is easily distinguishable from acceptable oil. The dipstick merely tells you that there is a brown substance in the sump....

Hi I have done a vacuum test at tandem and it holding at idle 25hg so that's good and the fuel output pressure is good too. The vnt lifts at 18 as you say and as does the egr so everything on the vacuum side seems to be working I have just purchased a boost tester so hopefully this might help me find a leak other than that I think it might have a software problem. My timing belt broke and caused damage to the engine, I have been quoted £1120 for new belt, reconditioned cylinder head gasket, change of valves, water pump etc. Is that a reasonable price, is changing all the components necessary or could it just do with new valves as the old ones got bent by the pistons once the belt has snapped. Anyone can advice me , as I dont know nothing about engines and any garage can just overcharge me thanks Read more
