1999 Nissan Micra - How much should I offer? - Michael 432000

Hi everyone!

I have just viewed a 1999 T registration 1.0 litre Nissan Micra Inspiration 3dr that has 56000 on the clock and I am considering for purchase.

One young lady has owned it from new and she is the seller. It has a full service history, MOT until March 2013 and is currently on her driveway untaxed.

Has an MOT advisory: 001 Power steering belt perished (I posted in the technical section).

Otherwise it looks decent enough, a few dings and scrapes but not too shabby, about what you would expect from a T registration Micra, hopefully a reliable little run around. And the lady seems nice and honest.

Exhaust looks slightly dodgy and one round 50p size rust mark on underside of the front crossmember near to join but gave good resistance to a press with my front door key.

One front tyre was a bit flat having been not driven on the road for a while.

Wondering how much to offer. She is asking £750.

I am useless at haggling. People always get a real bargain when they buy from me and I always seem to pay top rate when buying anything.

On-line valuations don’t seem to cater for pre 2000 vehicles.

Anyone advice welcomed.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

It has no real value at that age its what ever somebody wants to give condition of tyres ,brake discs, exhaust does it use any oil or water in truth if it passes muster its worth around 200pounds

How long has the car been up for sale?

Assuming just a week or two and it's the car you want, I'd offer £500 and walk away if the lady doesn't accept. Almost any car in reasonable condition with 9 months ticket, OK tyres etc. has got to be worth that much especially a car in a low insurance group and reasonably economical. It's the ideal learners car. In my view the gap with what she is asking and what Collos would be prepared to offer just ain't going to result in a sale.

Offer her 700 cash.

It is a genuine low mileage example, one owner, FSH with 10 months MOT, with only cosmetic problems. I wouldn't worry too much about the power steering belt.

You might need some welding on the front cross member sometime. But this is a cheap and easy job.

It is an old car, but these Micras were bulletproof (not like the modern ones!). Change the oil every year and the engine will do 150k, no problems.

"Offer her 700 cash"

Sorry mikem004, but at this level, what other payment options are there?

You have to be joking.

I don't see why not. A friend of mine runs a 51 plate Micra. It has 120k on the clock. He uses it to commute on the motorway, but since he's 21, the insurance on anything else is too high for him.

Start the engine from cold, does the timing chain rattle?

Without a test drive you can't check the gears, driveshafts, brakes etc.

I'd only offer scrap value, too many unknowns.

Have a look at the Honest John review. In their day, like the K10, they were one of the most reliable superminis out there. Possible problem area seems to be the throttle body - but the review outlines an Australian fix. Recommends oil regular oil changes for those doing short journeys

Undriveable shabby.. rust.

£100 tops.

NO test drive will be legal and you need to tax it before driving away.

A friend of mine has the same shape Micra with over 180000 miles. He's looking for something else now before something gives up the ghost and leaves him or his wife stranded but the thing just won't die.

It does receive regular oil changes.

I've had two high-mileage K11 Micras. The engine was smooth as silk on both of them.

If she's owned it since 1999 she can't be that young...

Hi everyone.

And thank you all for your replies.

I should point out that I did drive it up and back down their quiet street for about 2 minutes, just enough to get into 5 th gear for 2 seconds at a very low speed.

Everything seemed ok. The brakes didn’t feel great but no pulling to one side or anything, just a bit spongy or something.

I think the engine may have already been warmed up when I got there as they were expecting me so I not sure if the engine was started from cold. Timing chain problem was something I was aware of but I’m not expert enough to tell if there is a problem. It didn’t misfire or anything.

Haven’t owned a car for 3 years and my ‘no claims bonus’, which has already been extended, runs out on Sunday so I need to make a decision soon.

Thanks again for the interesting replies.

If you're worried about your NCB just buy something really cheap and put it on that. There's no way that micra is worth £750, you can get some fairly decent-ish cars for £750!

Here's some more on Autotrader to give you an idea of prices.

In your link, L and M Micras are going for 500. So a T-reg facelift model should be going for 700.

If it looks clean, drives well, buy it. My first motor was a £300 Fiesta which was a similar age. Did me proud for 18 months and 30,000 miles. Tinworm saw the end, but mehanically it was sound.

I've just been looking at our local freebie paper. 2 Micras in there, 2000 and 2001. Both higher milage than OP. one £650, the other £800. They will probably both sell to local takeaway operators!

Little Jap motors are in demand. They were built to last and they do 50 MPG.

A Micra would make an excellent first car, but only for someone not bothered by image. A Saxo, 106 or Clio is far more desirable to your average yoof.

Thank you for your responses ChrisM.

I’m only really concerned with getting from A to B cheaply and reliably without any kind of trouble.

I offered the lady £500 but she refused it.

Thanks for letting us know the outcome. Unfortunately I think you will need a big chunk of luck getting anything reliable without any kind of trouble for £500 or even £750. Those cars do exist, but they are in the minority. What is your plan B?

1999 Nissan Micra - How much should I offer? - Michael 432000
I have offered £560 and waiting for a reply to my text message.

I’m just off now, cycling 25 miles, to look at a T registration 1298cc with 70,000 on the clock.
