I just changed the thermostat on my Berlingo, easy job, the new one works much better but unfortunately leaks.
I can't understand how this is even possible as I changed the gasket and used a little silicone grease to hold it in place.
But the drips coming out the bottom don't lie...
Even some RTV/high temperature silicone sealant didn't stop it.
The new thermostat is branded Quinton Hazell, is anyone aware of their reputation? (Good or bad!)
Anyone else had this problem on the DW8?... Read more
I recently took my car in for a software update and while in the garage a free heath check was performed on the car.
I was told that the rear discs were worn down to a point when they needed to be changed.
I assumed that they meant the disc pads but was assured that it was the actual discs that needed changing at a cost of about £490.
I pointed out that the car had only covered 16000 miles since new, I use the gears to slow me down most of the time and I do not generally brake hard, therefore I considered the quality of the original discs to be suspect and was assured that this wear and tear on the discs is normal.
However I pointed out that I have driven for over 50 years and have never had to replace the discs on any car that I have owned,
Before deciding on whether to carry out the repair I spoke to the Jaguar head office technical dept and was told that using the cruise control and the speed limiter will dramatically increase the wear on the rear discs and therefore is was to be expected and initially resisted any blame.
However after protestations I was given a credit note for £250 to assist in the cost of the replacement discs.
The car has since been into the garage very recently for a service and MOT having covered not more than 200 miles from when the discs were changed and the MOT report stated that the rear discs have only 2mm of wear left before they need to be changed.
I immmediately checked the discs for wear and as I expected, the wear was practically undetectable.
So the question is, are Jaguar making the discs deliberately thin in order to keep the workshop busy or are Jaguar using inferior quality metal in the manufacture of the discs, or alternately, are the brake pads too hard and therefore effectively grinding the discs down too quickly.

An the OP's post seems somewhat confused. The disks only have 2 mm of wear on them when new, so the tester was essentially saying there in no wear.
The first change was also probably too early - there is no indication of what the state of the disc was before they were changed and the usual get out for the dealer is saying they did not think they would last until the next service so advised changing.
My S40 is going to need 4 new tyres in a couple of months so I am starting to look at options. The car needs 205/50 17W (reinforced) so the premium players like Michelin, Goodyear, Continental etc are all coming in at around £160 - £170 each inc fitting.
I must admit I have always been someone who doesn't skimp on any safery feature so in my previous cars where they were a smaller size, ergo cheaper, I have always tended to use Michelins.... Read more
I've two Pirelli P7 and two Matador Elite3 on my car. One pair is a premium brand, the other is a good tyre.
Hard to beat some of the mid-range tyres like Uniroyal (Continental brand), Matador (51% owned by Conti), Vredestein, Firestone (Bridgestone brand), or even something like Lassa (part owned by Bridgestone)....
I have a 2008 1.9 TDi Match, which has done 60,000 miles. When do you think an appropriate time is to change the cam belt?

4years or 60,000 - i.e. about now!
Get the water pump/antifreeze change at the same time. The water pump uses same belt and easy to change at the same time.
Hi all, I was wondering if I could have a little advice from those in the know.
I have been looking around for a deal on the new Ford Focus Zetec/Titanium (1.0L, 125PS) and came across nationwide-cars (Company No. 05013715), apparently it was previously called Cotswold Car Hire & Leasing Limited.... Read more
Hi NtrousA
The company you cite is Nationwide Cars Limited, which was incorporated in january 2004 as Cotswold Car Hire and Leasing Limited and changed it's name in may 2006. However it never traded at all until 2009 so has only filed 2 years accounts at Companies House....
Hi,
I'm thinking of selling my much loved Focus in the next few weeks as I'm thinking of switching to a diesel for a better mpg. I had the car serviced last week and the garage said they were unable to find the service book. So i've rummaged around at home and found the manual, all receipts, V5 etc, so everything but the service book which I can only assume as been lost. I was wondering what the best way to obtain a replacement is?... Read more
In which case I wouldn't be bothered about the lack of a book. Invoices showing when the oil was changed tell a buyer what they need to know as well as important detail about such things as brake fluid changes, timing belt and other failures (or not). IMO much more useful.

This well known problem is caused by overboost. The sequence is as follows:- The turbo generates more boost pressure than the preset maximum, the manifold pressure sensor detects this and informs the ecu which reduces the fuelling to protect the engine. The remedy is to adjust the mechanical stop for the boost control on the turbo in stages until the problem goes away.
I had to adjust mine several times to get rid of this problem....

Wonder what the OP chose and how they are getting on with it 2 years later.
I'm not a fan of BMWs but you can't argue with their fuel efficiency compared to rivals and low BIK which offsets much of the higher price. ...
Daughter has just started driving lessons.I've bought L plates and want to take her out myself in my car. Am I covered on comprehensive insurance for her to drive as a learner or will I have to load my insurance with a higher premium. How does it work? Read more
Just found this thread and thought I'd add my two pence. We tried to get my son insurance in his own car. No way he could be added to ours so seemed the better option. Trying to get insurance was a nightmare as many of the main Learner Driver Insurance providers only cover them to drive a car they don't own.
I have a 1.9 diesel DW8 van (year 2000), and mines been leaking from the thermostat cover for some years.
A new cover is £10 on ebay, I might be purchasing one....
