I have a 54 plate Vw passat 1.9 Tdi with the AWX engine, it has started loosing power when accelerating hard on the motor way, it seems to hit a level and then it won't go faster and the revs won't pick up. When I come off the motor way it's stays like this until I switch off and then is fine again, today I have been out and when I accelerated hard again the engine management light came on and the display says 'emission workshop'. After switching off the management light stays on but runs ok. It has full vw history and otherwise runs fine. Heeeeelp
Thanks

Does yours shudder when turning the engine off? [EDIT - sorry just seen this is March - however for others, if engine shudders on turn off then there is a vacuum leak/issue affecting EGR, turbo variable vanes and anti shudder valve]

Hi all, I have an 11 plate new model Ford Focus Estate 1.6TDCI Titanium. I bought it when it was 6-months old from a Ford main dealer when it had 8,000 miles on the clock. It now has nearly 10,000 on the clock.

Soon after I bought the car the clutch pedal started sticking down so that it only moved 1/2 inch but the clutch still engaged. Eventually the pedal never returned on its own, I had to lift the clutch pedal up with my foot. After multiple visits to a dealer they traced the issue to a faulty clutch pedal return spring which once they found a part (which took 3-weeks) they replaced it under warranty and all was ok for a couple of months.

However now when the car hasn't been used for a few days or if on a motorway for a long period (i.e the clutch hasn't been depressed for a while) when i depress the clutch pedal the gear engages but the pedal only comes 1/2 way back up; I again have to flick it all the way up with my foot. The unpredictable nature of the fault can make hill starts tricky, at least before I knew it wouldn't return at all and could drive accordingly!

Does anyone have any ideas what might be the issue so that when the garage again say they can't replicate the fault and can't do anything I have a bit more ammunition to hit them with to make them investigate further?

Many thanks!

I have a great memory and remember them from my Corsa! No I just cut and pasted them, oh I can't remember.

Impressively long list though you must agree....

I was driving up a very steep hill yesterday and the car suddenly lost power and there was very heavy smoke. I managed to get pulled in at the side of the road and switched off the engine. I couldnt restart the engine and there was a very strong smell of burning oil all round the car. When the recovery service arrived they managed to start the car only by attaching a booster to the battery but it was still smokey and sounded rattley. Most of the oil has disappeared out of the engine. They said the turbo has gone and there may be damage to the intercooler. Car is now at a Kia dealership and probably wont be looked at until Monday. Car has only 59000 miles, full service history and is 4 years old so still under warranty. Anyone else has this problem with a Kia CEE`D or Hyundai i30? Read more

as i had had a delay in getting my 3rd service 2 years ago they've said they cannot accept liability.

That's standard industry practice. The warranty is a two-way street. There is an obligation on the operator as well as the manufacturer.

This is a word of warning for those people thinking of buying a used Mondeo 2.0 diesel TDCI.

Take it for a long test drive, at least 45mins. Ensure that once its properly warmed up - take it down the motorway or similar and drive at a constant 70+ mph for at least 10 mins. If the orange glow plug light comes on (looks like a coiled spring) then DON'T buy it. It will probably cut out in any case but will re-start when you stop. It may also go into limp home mode and the engine management light will come on.... Read more

Is the Peugeot 308 diesel chain or cambelt driven? Read more

gordonbennet

In theory on most engines a timing chain should last the life of the vehicle*, this was the case for many years with only the odd exception but in recent years some engines from German makers have suffered with timing chain issues, obviously a timing chain is a more involved replacement than an external dry cambelt, the new wet cambelt designs i would humbly suggest are the worst of all worlds and i wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

* will qualify that 'should last the life of the vehicle' with assuming some sensible routine servicing involving regular fresh good oil kept topped up between services has been the norm, some judgement about previous care can be gathered from a service history....

looking at a passat 1.9 tdi estate full service history majority by vw, bit nervous about the milage having only driven petrol cars, anyone know what intervals the timing chain/belt needs doing or what else to look out for. are theyt good cars? Read more

I've been a diesel engineer for 40 years and never have I seen an engine as tough as the VW units.

Are the thousands of longitudinally mounted VW 2 litre PD engines that have gone bang after the oil pump shaft wears round leaving the engine unlubricated at less thatn 60K miles tough?...
