I've got a 51 plate 1.2 8v petrol punto with 50k on the clock. The power steering light appeared while driving so I swapped the power steering motor with one from a scrap yard and fully charged the battery (which is around 2 years old). I then drove the car 4 or 5 times and it was working fine.

When I turned the key this morning the light is back on and the steering is heavy. Any ideas what else I can try?? The battery is a Yuasa and is only 2 years old so I don;t think that's faulty. I've checked all the fuses that are mentioned in the Haynes PAS wiring diagram and they seem fine too. I've got an OBDII connector but can't find the socket to read the codes, any ideas?? Read more

I've swapped the steering motor again with the scrap yard and it seems to be working fine. Fingers Crossed

Could some one please help by providing a diagram link or explaination of the colour codes for the black radio plug with the power etc. I am baffled as there seems to be three permanent lives but when plugged straight in there is no memory. I enquired about a after marked loom but I am told my radio should just plug straight in. For now I have taken a wire from the central locking fuse ( just like from the battery) and the radio is permanently on so must be turned off to not drain the battery. Read more

Thanks for the reply but what is the 'can network' Also what you suggest is a bit of a hassle for me, seems a bit complex. I have fitted radios in every car I've had without too much hassle until now. it would help if I knew what wires were what. here is a discription of them

Hi,
Would anyone be good enough to advise on this oil leak,
which has just appeared a few days ago?

I'm guessing it's the camshaft seal leaking?

There's only a few drops at the moment,
but I am a bit concerned about whether the seal (if it is that)
has a tendency to pop out & take the oil with it.... Read more

ps just to add,
the head gasket wasn't replaced on this car.
It was another one , which unfortunatley is no longer of this mortal coil. :o)

Hi guys, I have recently been given a 1998 ford focus 1.8 TDDi which on the whole looked like a good car. I drove the car after collecting it and it appears to only be pulling on engine power, i.e the turbo is not kicking in at all, and is therefore very sluggish.
I have looked at the engine and cannot immediately see any loose pipework or issues but was told by the previous owner ( a family member ) that it recently had something changed in the turbo itself which to me sounded odd as I thought the internals of a turbo were non replaceable, but then I am no mechanic at all.
Can anybody help me with some common problems this might be or will I have to bite the bullet and replace the whole turbo and pipework??

thanks

As unthrottled says, check all of the rubber pressure pipes between the turbo and inlet manifold Splits might be hard to see so maybe use a mirror on a stick to see all sides of the pipes and grasp them and squeeze to open up any splits. Also check all jubilee clips are tight. A leak might be revealed by oily spray, as the air from the turbo contains an oil mist which will blow out of leaks onto adjacent areas.

The short 'concertina' pipes either side of the intercooler (mounted on top of the engine, immediately behind the front crossmember) are pretty flimsy and often start leaking on this engine - I replaced those on my car with sturdier silicone pipework (but needs corrugated section for flexibility as the intercooler is mounted to the bodyshell)....

Hi Peter. I don't understand your last comment. These is one cable coming out of the base apart from the coaxial cable. I have been told that This should be attached to a switched Positive output which I have done and the Negitive is taken from the Chassis of the car. If it did Short circuit as you mentioned it would have blown the fuse.

Looks as if my battery has died. On checking replacements, I see a calcium type is offered. Given the extra cost, is it worth it? (The engine is not diesel.) Read more

£1k of damage to my car means I'd be weighing it in, so still a saving as far as the battery is concerned.

I have motor trade insurance which doesn't cover windscreens in the same way as a private policy. Very strangely, I've noticed a massive crack in the windscreen of a E90 BMW 320D after a test drive last night.

I remember years ago it cost about £900 to replace a windscreen on a E65 7 series - does anyone know of any companies that supply and fit windscreens at a lower cost? I guess 99.9% of people who need a new screen just claim on their private car insurance so getting one fitted on the cheap seems albeit impossible. Any ideas appreciated.... Read more

Back about 20 years I was wealthy enough to buy and insure a Golf GTi, the insurance cost me 3 x what I paid for a BMW this year and I was not a young tearaway back then and had a clean record with full NCB, it eventiually got nicked which was why they cost so much to insure.

The screen got cracked thus rang insurance to find out who their favoured glass replacement company was. Told that my screen excess was the same as my policy excess at £300 thus not worth claiming, not happy but that's life. I rang round the local and national replacement companies and one that began with "auto" asked where the car was, said they were on their way past to another job and would call in on the way was £75 OK, not much more than I expected to pay as my excess, happy again....

Hardly news or worthy of a post - moron buys car, doesn't service it, engine pops, moron complains because manufacturer won't fix it.

When 206's were newish the skips round the back of dealers were overflowing with broken seat frames.

New seat frame cheap enough, but you'll need a handy spanner person to strip and reupholster, upholstery has to come off anyway to inspect so thats the first move, used seat will be OK but matching the colours could prove difficult.
