March 2012
In the April edition of Which?, they highlight that a 'malfunction indication lamp' (MIL) test has been in place since January 2012, where MOT examiners are required to visually check the warning lights for ABS, electronic stability control, airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners and tyre pressure monitoring systems.
Until now illuminated lights for any of these systems would have been flagged as an advisory, but from 1st April 2012, they will result in an automatic MOT fail. Read more
Hi,
This is my 1st post on the site, I have been lingering around for a while and though I would say Hi.
Anyhow I was hoping to get some advice. I Purchased an Audi A1 1.4 TFSI Sport Brand new from an Audi Dealer on the 22nd of November 2011. Since the 15th of December onwards a number of problems have been present with the vehicle and the car has now been in on the following occasions:... Read more
I agree strongly with giving one's business to a small(ish) family owned concern. Near where I live there is a medium size Kia franchise, which was Rover until a few years ago, and I was in the other day for a brochure and the workshop manager was the same one who was there in1999 which I thought was a good sign.
Since then I have used a Peugeot dealer in Stamford Lincs and a Ford dealer in Cottesmore Rurland. Both owned and run by a selection of family members (Father, Son, Uncle etc) and good service. In summary, big enough to know what they are doing and small enough to give a personal service....
Am reluctant to buy one of these, as not an MPV fan, it looks a bit dated to me (despite the remodel), have been around ages, and there's a new model coming out in 2014 and real mpgs seem far away from official figures...but what's the alternative? Like a bit of acceleration, pref diesel, manual gearbox and def need room for 3 car seats across the back. And would prefer good mpg. Where is the car that meets these needs ?! I'd welcome views/experiences. Read more
The 5008 is an awful beast, used one with an auto box for a week and couldn't wait to give it back. It rode like a jelly steering was point and guess and the auto box made it drive as if on a roller coaster.
Have driven the S- Max 2.2 manual a few times and it is 100% better than the 5008. Drives like a car with road holding and ride to match. If they did a conventional torque converter auto then I would buy one tomorrow, that's the only reason for not buying one.
My car has suddenly started struggling for fuel ( I believe) when on the road, the symptons are like having kangaroom petrol. If i drop a gear and rev the engine it appears to clear it for a short time before starting again, the fuel filter has just been changed and it was ok for about 8 miles before it started again. When going along the road, if I put the peddle down it struggles to pick up speed and wont increase at all. If i stop at a round about or a road end awaiting a clear spot I have to choose very well as my start off is laboured and slow as it struggles to get up to speed. I cant think of what might be causing it, any help would be appreciated. Thanks
My local got me into another one to check the engine readings, gases etc and it flew it with a full pass.
You see with a duff lambda sensor, it shouldn't have managed to pass tthe emissions test. That's why I didn'tthink of it!...
Going to purchase a 2008 Honda Crv- this weekend, however i have a choice between two:

Steve,
Many thanks. I have a non functioning cigar lighter-but the radio still works. This made me rule out the main fuse. I was unaware of the existence of the inline fuse.
I purchased a ford focus c-max 2.0 tdci, 42,000 miles seen on auto trader from a dealer about 100 miles away from me. I agreed a price on the promise that the car was sound and it was delivered to me at a mutually convenient location. As soon as I received the car I noticed an alarming knocking sound from the car and I immediately informed the seller via text message that I was going to have the noise checked out by a garage local to myself for an opinion.

Just seen a 12 plate Hyundai i40 saloon on my way home. What a nice looking car! It was white. I was pleasantly surprised. Anyone driven one? Read more
Our i30 is going for it's 2nd service next week. Again, as I said earlier, only the central locking is giving issues, and I've traced the problem to the plastic trim round the inside door handles binding on the little lock button. Sometimes the button doesn't pop out far enough, letting you exit the car but unable to get back in through the affected door. £2 plastic parts, eh?
Dealer has new trims ordered to be fitted on all 4 doors. Otherwise everything is peachy. Still doing 42mpg, 13k on the clock so far and it's getting used more recently so miles are racking up faster than before. ...
Hi, I'm thinking about buying a 57 plate mondeo 1.8tdci 125ps. I've read alot about problems with the dual mass flywheels on earlier models. Does anyone know if this is still a problem on the mark 4's. Also am i right in thinking these cars have a timing chain not a belt? cheers Steve Read more
I think it is more the very low RPM/high torque scenarios which kill DMFs. With a clutch, the friction plate (should) be solidly coupled to the pressure plate, whereas a DMF allows a degree of angular 'slip' via the springs. This is why diesel engines are a bit stall happy nowadays. Manufacturers tend to prefer to let an engine cut out if the RPMs drop below idle speed, and to restrict torque at very low speeds. This has curbed the number of DMF failures, but makes the engines a bit less willing in stop/start conditions.
The advice is to start the engine with the clutch depressed to increase DMF life.
I hope someone can help I have a 2008 focus 1.6tdci. Started to run rough and hesitates when accelerating. Also white smoke at high revs. This started last week intermittently but now doing it all the time. Any Ideas? Read more
Good choice, I found the 1.6 CDRi engine a lot more responsive than the 1.6 TDCi engine, only downsides are the 1.6 CDRi tends to boom a bit around 1500rpm and uses a bit more fuel, the all round disk brakes on the i30 are superb, much better than on the Focus.
Enjoy the i30, plus you still have plenty of warranty left as well which offers piece of mind....
I'm getting the ABS warning come on from time to time in my old Ford, must be time to change the brake fluid.
I was meaning to, honest....
