I will be driving steadily along at say 60mph all is well. Then, suddenly, the STOP light flashes and the temperature gauge rises to the red zone. I then stop, there is nothing actually wrong (i.e. not overheating, water fine, oil fine). Turn the ignition off, restart and the car is back to normal. Then it happens about 30 minutes later. And so on.

A couple of observations - firstly, this only happens during Winter time, it does not happen in mild temperatures. Second, we have changed the temperature sensor 3x and not solved it! Thirdly, it only ever happens when plodding along at 50mph plus. ... Read more

Hello - I am having the same problem and was wondering whether you found out what the solution was? / what you ended up doing? Thank you!

Who knows? - no response from anyone. Cause looks electrical to me, and I guess as all the posters have found no actual fault, perhaps grin and bear it. It's a feature - they all do that, sir (or at least some do ... ).

Good evening

I have a four year old Fiesta which has been completely trouble free until tonight. I was driving home and noticed after a few miles the temperature gauge was hitting the red, this morning there was absolutely nothing wrong and the gauge was in the centre. I do recall hitting some object this morning on the road 1 mile from work and I wonder if this has damaged a radiator hose, as the leak seems to be coming from near the radiator.... Read more

Garage say it's a split hose, stopping the car before it really overheated probably saved the head gasket. Thank goodness as I have a far smaller bill to pay.

i have an 05 vivaro and am having a nightmare with it.
it splutters and misfires then stops at 2400 revs and blows grey smoke out the exhaust...a lot of it. it seems to be over fueling as it smells of diesel. every now and then it will clear the 2400 but it doesn't rev clean at all. its been on a computer and had a few faults, but we think these were from disconnecting sensors to see if it made any difference. it does go into limp mode after a couple of minutes.
it has had, this week, a new turbo, as this was diagnosed as the problem.
the mechanic who did the work then took it to a friend of his who is breaking a 1.9dti renault laguna, and he has swapped every sensor on it, including air flow, egr, boost pressure, cam, crank, everything he could think of, he has also swapped the injectors, and it is still the same. when the glow plug/engine management comes on and is plugged into the computer, it shows no fauilts.

i am getting a little miserable with this van to say the least and am now regretting ever getting it.
can someone please shed some light on this?
thank you for any input

Hi there, I have a Renault Clio with 48K on the clock and 6 years old. Manual says the timing belt should be changed at 72K or 5 years. Should I bother as in time it's due but not in mileage ?
Not really wanting to spend out now if I can help it!!
Many thanks.

My niece owns a Renault Megane Scenic. She was waiting for the 72K miles to get the timing belt changed, even thought the car was 9 years old!

At 69K miles the belt snapped. Bill to repair engine afterwards? £1400 !!!...

hi all

i recently purchaced a 2003 ford focus zetec 1.8 tdci from guy from ebay which stated in perfect working order. 46 miles after buying the glow plug light came on whilst on the motorway causing car to go into limp mode. a quick switch off then restart cured this for a few more miles where it kept happening. at one point it completely lost all power and shut everything down apart from the radio! i took it to my local diesel specialists, who came highly reccommended who done a full diagnostic and leakage test. the fault came back to injector no 1 exess leakage and they advised replacing no 1 injector and also replacing the fuel filter. this i did at a cost of £220 for injector supply and fit and the fuel filter and the diagnostic was £65. upon collecting the car yesterday it seemed to run fine until the exact same symptoms started again! i rang the garage and he said to bring it back over and so far all i know is the same fault code p0251 injector pump fuel metering control A malfunction has come up yet again!!! as yet the garage hasnt told me the full diagnostic but in fairness the car ran a lot better after injector 1 was replaced! any ideas? as we bought this car to get me too and from the local hospital so i can have chemotherapy so it really is a lifeline and moneys tight! im just worried i might have to change all the injectors and the fault will still be there! has anyone else come accross this type of fault? thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide. jamie. Hi Jamie, I know it's been a while since you posted your comments about the cam sensor, but what happend? Did you end up changing it? Did it make a difference or did you find out is was something different?

Look forward to hearing back from you... Az

Very loud knocking noise at idle speed. Camouflaged at higher revs but still detectible. Engine management warning light (car with spanner through it) on. No detectable deterioration in performance or fuel economy. My Vauxhall agent has the car in at present and has discounted vvt solenoid. Has now homed in on cam gears but cannot decide if one or both have failed. Suggests changing one, the cheapest I assume, but if this fails to solve problem the cam system will, presumably, have to be stripped again to change the other. From a cost point of view would it be better to change both together, plus timing belt, pulleys and tensioners. Mileage is 49,000 and belt has not been changed before. Advised 80,000 mile intervals by Vx agent. Urgent advice needed. Read more

Sounds like the exact opposite of an MG Rover 1.8 "K" VVC unit. The hydraulic cam control systems on those are bulletproof and work very well[1], but the engine underneath is a well-known pig's ear.

I can't help thinking that there's a really good engine to be had by combining the best bits of both.........

Hi I am new although looked alot in the past.

I have a big problem.
Vw caddy maxi 2.0 tdi 140bhp 2009
68000 miles bmm engine code
it broke the crankshaft & cracked the
block for no reason serviced right not low
On oil.
Looked all over for a bmm engine
Which I could not find. So on advice
From vw ireland and car dismantlers
Was told that a bkd should fit in place.
However received bkd engine yesterday
Which is really clean and good looking
Engine. But turbo and Manifold are in totally
Different positions and some point the wrong
Way.
Would it work if we tried to pipe these
Over are or we just going to hit block
Wall regards to ecu etc etc.
I am told that the bottom half is the
Same on both but this is also not 100%

What should I do any advise would be great.

I would love to put the bkd engine into
It but my mechanic thinks this is almost
Impossible ( but others who are not doing
The job said it will work )
What I have read here is the bkd is good
And the bmm is bad.
I don't want to spend loads of money
On it and then have more crap after.

What you think.

Hello,

I've been looking to buy a replacement car and the Nissan Note appears to be well regarded and has generally pretty good overall feedback. Originally, I was considering the 1.4 petrol but not sure how well this would cope when fully loaded. So, thought turned to diesel - I do enough mileage (and it is out of town stuff too) to warrant one, but have been put off a bit by the reliability issues that seem to plague modern diesels.... Hi Everyone,

I have owned a 2007 model Note 1.5 dci for the past 2 years. It has covered some 90000 miles - some of them very happy... but... THIS IS A WARNING FOR ALL THOSE, WHO THINK THAT RENAULT ENGINES IN NISSAN NOTE ARE IDENTICAL WITH THOSE FITTED TO RENAULT CARS and can be repaired at renault garages....

I am looking/was looking at purchasing a BMW 1 Series 118d. The car was registered October 2009. I'm very concerned to be reading about timing chain failures on this engine. I believe the crank was changed from 01/09 so the car i'm looking at should have this new crank fitted from the factory. Thing is i'm reading about people who have had problems with cars from 07 & 08 but not seen any problems reported for cars from 09. Even in the honest John review section for what's bad it's 2, 07 cars and a 08 with timing chain problems.

Did the new crank sort most of the timing chain problems?... Read more

I've since had a look at the design of this chain drive and in my opinion, its long term chances of survival are slim. It meets none of the criteria for long life as outlined in my previous post.

Google "N47 timing chain failure" and see what you find....
