Hello Pros,

I am buying a second hand family runaround for £1000 or under. I only do about 100 or less (more like 50) miles a week running the kids around and popping to the shops, but I will want to do the occasional 4 hour road trip at Christmas etcetera.... Read more

Personally, I'd be looking for a good Mondeo Mk2. The newest of these would now be 11 years old, but there are some very nice low mileage examples around. Petrol model, of course, with a full service history. They just have a cambelt that needs changing after 10 years of 100,000 miles, whichever is reached first. Make sure the clutch is OK.

A 2.0L Zetec is probably the model to go for. Buy a manual, don't buy an automatic because the autobox isn't much good....

My car was leaking water but i could not pin point the location as everything was dry including the floor. I was filling it before every journey. Had to change headlight bulb today after changing the bulb started the engine to check if everything is o.k. when all of sudden water started to flow from a small hole very close to the belt like a fountain and drained the tank in a couple of minutes. Refilled the tank but same thing happened. Had to drive for a few miles and the heat gauge went all the way close to red lines. There is a hole on the part that is attached to the engine. I am not sure what part it is. I can only think of water pump. Water is leaking on to the belt and engine generating steam. The leaked water is clean with out any trace of oil etc. What could have caused this problem and how can i fix it? Please help!! Read more

Hi everyone

Starting to think about getting a new car, quite like the look of a crossover like the Kia sportage or similar. Have looked at an ix35 and 3008 and am starting to think they may not be suitable for us

We really need a car that can take two car seats in rear, preferably highball isofix for age up to 11. Would like to fit an adult in the middle rear seat reasonably comfortably. The ix35 could get bottom in but shoulders were an issue, the 3008 couldn't get bottom in!

Don't really want a 7 seater, will be getting rid of our xsara Picasso so would be nice to have a "nice" car now. Any thoughts on this? I know ix35 and sportage are same car but different trim so wondered if there was any more space on seats or what about qashqai? Or do I need to widen the search?

The FRV is a great car, designed during Honda's imaginativre phase which sadly seems to be over. I suppose it was withdrawn because it didn't sell well.

The Fiat Multipla, similarly with 3 + 3 seating, didn't sell well either, not only because of chronic ugliness but I think also because not every parent wants a bambino saying 'are we nearly there' directly into their left ear. When our four children were young they sat in the back or 'very back' of a series of excellent seven-seater Renaults, models which sold rather better.

Earthing on light clusters can cause all sorts of wiered (or wired) problems.

Another one to watch out for is bad earths on the rear lights - as well as funny light combinations this can cause problems where ECUs are told to cut power when brakes applied. With a bad earth problem I've seen strange symptoms such as loss of power when using indicators!

Hi all. New member here, just joined and have a question for those in the know.

For the last month or so I have had a misfire/rough running problem from cold. Traction control light (yellow triangle in yellow circle) comes on after depressing the loud pedal literally moments after setting off. After engine is warmed up (5 miles approx) the light will go out and engine will run fine if the car is turned off and then on again. It clears and pulls strongly from there on.... Read more

The head harness is by far the most common cause of a misfire on the PD, I replaced my first one in 2001 on a car we had imported the year before.

My friend’s 2002 Mercedes C180 does not always start and, even when it does, it often cuts out without warning.

I am not convinced that this a key/igntion switch problem.More likely to be an engine control management issue.Replacing ignition switch on these is an expensive operation and the keys come pre-coded from MB,a s/hand key is useless.A more in depth diagnosis is reqd .hth

I’m very confused to what this issue could. I recently brought a Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 CDti and it has been going back and forth to my local garage as when I select 5 or 6th gear (when the engine has warmed up). The car starts chucking out a load of white smoke from the exhaust but when you shut the engine off and re start the car the white smoke stops.

I originally thought it was the head gasket but there is no movement on the fluid and this has also been checked by the garage... Read more

Hi I could do with some advice. I replaced The copper injector seals and the plastic seals on a 2005 1.4 tdci ford fiesta today and after putting it back together and bleeding it up i turned the key to start it up and all i got was a clicking from the starter motor which i thought was strange because it started fine before commencing work on it, it just ran rough that was all. After aload of investigating I'm still no closer to finding out what is wrong with it. Initially i thought it might of had a bad earth but after bridging a lead from the negative terminal to the engine hoist bracket it still wouldn't turn over even tried another battery but nothing. Hopefully someone can help.

As a UK national now resident in France I may be worrying needlessly but I DO know my Uk driving licence is valid to drive in France without having to exchange it (EU Directive) (presumably until it is due to run out when I have to renew in france) and I also know that it is illegal for a UK resident to drive a foreign car on UK roads(with few exceptions)

I am worried by the fact that though I am not resident in Uk now but have a UK licence still that this MAY cause me aggro with Uk police if stopped during a visit - since it might appear that I am a resident because of my UK licence.... Read more

This thread merely highlights the ridiculous situation that the DVLA have talked themselves into. If you have a photocard licence it is badged as an EU licence which is accepted in all EU countries. Until you go to live in one that is-than the DVLA doesn't like it and starts to get antsy about addresses and residency.

The best solution I can think of is to get a duplicate licence for your UK one from the DVLA and then exchange it for a licence of the country where you are living and hang onto your original UK licence, like loads of people that I know have done....
