Car Horn Mot Rules - dsuk81

Can i install a new car horn, using a new switch near the light controls on my car dashboard?

My current wheel based horn doesnt work, will this new solution get around a possible mot failure.

I have investigated the issue with the current horn problem, and repair would be a significant cost. More than the value of the car...

Seems a shame to right off a car due to horn failure.

I can't see why not: the MoT requirement is for the horn to work and be controlled by the driver.

I had a number of Renaults whose horn was worked, for no obvious reason, by pressing the indicator stalk inwards. That silly fashion seems to have gone away and most horn pushes are back where they should be. But I can see your point about the expense compared with the value of the car.

The horn is on the wiper stalk in many Peugeot's as well.

I have my horn wired up to a small switch on the steering column after replacing my steering wheel on my classic BMW. Passes MOT no problem .

Just make sure you tell the tester in advance where the switch is, as they failed me for a non-functional horn as htey didn't realise it was wired to the switch.

Not according to the book for a modern vehicle?? Insecure and not continuous ??

The horn control missing, insecure or not readily accessible to the driver

fitted to a vehicle first used on or after 1 August 1973, emits a sound which is

· not a continuous or uniform note

1. The horn control missing, insecure or not readily accessible to the driver

As others have said, as long as it's within easy reach then it's ok.

Being near the light switches 'might' not be classed as within easy reach though.

A classic i had several years ago had a horn button (self cancelling toggle switch actually) on the dash, never had a problem with the MOT.

I had a car with a horn on a stalk, no problem.

But talking of silly fashions, whatever happened to air horns? They were great!
