My oil light started to flash today, so when i got home waited a couple hours for it to cool down, went to check oil level and saw that water tank was all dark inside. Upon opening it was full of oil!!!
I drove to one garage who said it was the cooler that needed replacing (he asked me if my heater had stopped working which it had). Hedidnt fully inspect the car but had a glance over it and came to this conclusion. He also said it would take 3days to fix as every pipe would need flushing.... Read more
I am about to change the _REAR_ pads and disks on the the other half's
Jazz 1.4 04 plate.
I understand that one needs to wind back the calipers/pistons, rather
than simply pushing them back.... Read more
On the ones that have to be pressed in and wound simultaneously, I've found that a G-clamp and a pair of water pump pliers do the trick.
Please Please HELP. Water loss, changed thermostat, new radiator, new water pump. Temp gage reading normal, then goes up to half way, then comes down to normal. When I look at coolant level,,,no coolant. If cyl head has gone the gauge should go sky-high. Is this the case? Or can you point me in the right direction to any other poss problem. Read more

My current diesel is a EURO 3 standard, with no DPF, would all EURO 3 cars be DPF free?
At what EURO Emmission Standard did the fitment of DPF become shall we say complulsory. Read more

Just put my 08 plate 320i M Sport Touring into my local BMW specialist for a regular brake fluid service.
Only had the car 3 months and had experienced a few misfires and generally sluggish acceleration. Car had done 33000 miles when purchased and I don't do a huge mileage - about 7000/year.
Asked the garage to do a diagnostic check on the EMS and they reported that the check had shown up a blocked catalytic converter. They had put a proprietary additive (not sure which one) into the fuel and advised me to go out and "drive the car as if i had stolen it"
Went for a blast down the motorway for about 50-60 miles but not sure if that will be enough to affect a clean out.
My questions are - How efficient are these cleaners and how much high rev driving must i do to get them to work?
Also given my generally low annual mileage - how often will I need to treat the catalytic converter to prevent blockage or will driving "hard" when I do travel be enough?
Any recommendations on which additives are reputed to do a good job? Read more

Hello
My rear wiper was Ok but last Sunday when i went to use it the made a noise between a grind/wine. Thought it might be a bearing but as its a sealed unit did not check . Bought another from the breakers once fitted this also made the same fault . It possable that they are both faulty .... Read more
The wiper motor on my '56 Jazz has just started making the same noise. Found this thread and followed your advice - another loose magnet!
Many thanks for sharing this simple fix!
The engine Management light came on and the car went into Limp Mode on my Vectra whilst I was driving it.
I took it round to a garage who suspected I had filled up with bad fuel. They changed my Fuel Filter which made no difference. They then told me that my Inlet Manifold needed changing, which they did and it made no difference. They put it on the diagnostic machine which flagged up Crankshaft Sensor, but the garage told me my car doesnt have one? They then told me that my timing chain and tensioners etc needed replaceing. I got a bit fed up with the garage not knowing what was happening and paying for things that didnt need doing so called the RAC out to get me home.... Read more
Has anyone ever used the car polish advertised on TV where you do not wash the car first? It says at the start of the advert that it uses a combination of silicones.
I always thought that you should never use silicone near a car's paintwork as it can lead to all sorts of problems in the event of needing to have a panel resprayed, silicone craters etc. Any comments? Read more
No, I didn't mean waterless - I was thinking of the stuff Hamsafar is referring to, which he puts on post-wash.
Between Nov and Dec 2011 I started to have a problem with my car and the boot popping open whilst driving. (my car is a Citroen C4 VTRI + 55 reg) This happened on two separate occasions. Eventually I contacted Citroen who advised me that the car needed to be re-called back to them as this was fault of the manufactures and something to do with the wiring loom on the tailgate. So i sent the car into local Citroen dealer and the car was returned the same day repaired (or so they say).
On the 28th January 2012 i was driving my car with my children in there car seats and my sister in the car also. Again I heard a pop on the car and my children started to scream as i turned round there was smoke all in the back of my car and my children were coughing and the boot was open then my windscreen wipers, and indicators were going off ... I climbed out my car and noticed that the front foot wells were now filling up with smoke and both my children were stuck in the back of the car (3 door car).
A man across the road ran over and got my children out of the car and lifted my bonnet to disconnect the battery. He was a mechanic and informed me that if it had been a few moments later the car would have gone on fire and even worse could have exploded on my drive with me, my 2 young children and my sister in the car or by the car!... I've recently acquired a 2009 XF 2.7D Luxury with 44,000 miles. When driving home this evening, I noticed that the heater seemed far hotter than normal and I also noticed a burning smell from under the bonnet. The engine water looks fine but it seems as though the burning sensation is coming from the rubber pipe leading into the engine water. I also noticed a ticking noise afterwards as though the engine is cooling down. As a new XF owner, I don't know of any good independent specialists so I'd greatly appreciate any views on what could be causing the trouble. I've driven about 2000 miles in the car and up until tonight haven't noticed this issue before. I have read that the turbos operate at a very high temperature but doubt that this is connected to my issue.... Read more
Many thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, there is no temperature gauge but if the car was overheating a red warning light should have come on. As far as I can see in the dark, there is no coolant loss, the coolant level is right up to the maximum.
I read a fair bit about the DPF before buying an XF and it nearly put me off buying one! To be honest, I didn't realise that this overheating could be part of the engine management system burning off soot. Many thanks again as you've put my mind at rest....
Every turbocharged Ford(petrol & diesel)is fitted with an oil cooler-usually one between oil filter and block. The TDI & TDDI are not known for blowing headgaskets.
