Most of the water additive products are snake oil. They have been known to block up water ways and damage water pumps instead of fixing the head gasket. Bars leak works fine (or did) for rad leaks but that is about it.

If you carry on driving you may end up needing to have the head skimmed as well as replacing the gasket, carry on too long and you may need a replacement head....

Dear All

I've sadly fallen victim to dual mass flywheel issues on my 9 month old Audi A1. I've lookeda round the internet and have discovered that DMF have been troublesome for all amnner of cars and warranties are not lived up to as the retailers blame it on driving style. I read on this website that the difference in wear can be visible on a damaged clutch and flywheel between DMF being faulty and riding the clutch. Can anyone perhaps describe what this would look like or point me in the dirrection of where to find this information.... Read more

Hi all,

I have a Peugeot 406 automatic gear. When I start driving there is no problem in the beginning but after about 20 meter, the car seems disengaging from the gear (something like pressing the clutch in manual cars). Rpm is increasing with the throttle but there is no move. If I restart the car, it is again no problem 20 meters or so and then problem starts and car doens't move at all. What could be the problem? OK go onto youtube and put in your vehicle and the problem ,there people on there who do this for a living and you can see just whats going on if you dont have the skill set to change the fluid you will have to take it to someone who knows how to do it , these days we have things like level tubes to check the level and the fact that it has to be checked at working temp , then you have things like the level tube is hidden up inside the drain plug hole and you need an 8mm allen key to get it out to drain the unit ,thats if you have a modern unit

so before you decide to do it, check on how to first from people who know how to and whats involved !...

Trying to help someone in a dispute with a Ford dealer. They bought 07 model in May last year. Mileage was 37,000 with FFSH. Seven months later the car breaks down and recovered to dealer. Turbo failure is diagnosed. Garage then fits a new turbo, and which point - in their own words -letter below.

"After carrying out initial diagnosis it was found that the turbo had failed. We replaced the turbo with your authority and upon completion started the vehicle in the workshop. This is normal practice.... Read more

I agree with the above. We all know that if a Diesel engine runs ungoverned then the air intake must be blocked immediately. You don't just let it run until a con rod appears out the block, which it will. The garage undertaking this work must've known the risks associated with such a job. Many garages would've left well alone. Based on what the OP says I'm inclined to think that the garage who carried out the repair is at fault.

I have received a notice of intended prosecution letter earlier saying that I have drove through the red light and have been captured by a camera .

I honestly have no memory of this happened but the time and the date is correct that I remember I have drove through there since I was on the way to uni with my friends. Neither me nor my friends noticed about this incident.... Read more

Amber means Stop too but there is a defence based on driver believing it would be dangerous to do so. Unfortunately most drivers either wilfully or by ignorance regard amber as something to be raced. In London the same applies to first half second of red - even for 'professional' drivers of buses or taxis.

Crossing a red is an absolute offence. There are few defences apart from being directed by a police oficer in uniform and possibly some saving to do with lights stuck on red. 'New' OP needs to consider position carefully....

Yes indeed...I own a low milage Ford Smax - Bought brand new because my wife was expecting twins and we needed to get three car seats in the back...

So the expensive turbo/DMF/DPF (delete as applicable/relevant) hasn't gone then ??

I have a friend with an S-Max as well (56 reg), he has found a bloke under-the-arches who sorts out most of the electrical problems for him. Once the warranty was up he ditched the main dealer & used him. I'd find someone similar....

To all users firstly forgive me im new on the site tonight and hope that in the right place asking the right questions.

I have recently bought the above veh. Its the Ex and the quality is fantastic. I love it except as I have read on the site. My veh is making the same noise as others have reported, 'turbo whistle' when the engine is cold and between 1400 - 1800/2000 rpm, as soon as the engine upto running temp this noise goes.My veh is covered with fullHonda warranty for 12mths so if there is a prob I need to get it sorted.I visited a local Honda dealer and I must say the quality and level of service recieved was 2nd to none.... I have a 07 manufactured 2008 model Honda Civic 2.2 ctdi diesel. I get exactly the same very slight audible turbo whistle from cold, it only happens from overnight cold and by the time I have done 1.5- 2 miles it is not audible.

The only reason I can think of for the cause of the noise is that when the lube oil is cold there is a slight drag on the turbo bearings/shaft and the whistle is at a slightly lower pitch and more audible to human ears. When the oil is warmer the turbo spins faster and the noise is at a higher pitch and not noticeable.

Thanks for the replies. I won't be getting diesel, our annual mileage is only 5000. We are lucky to have an excellent local Renault dealer who have kept us going when there has been the odd problem.

At the moment I am leaning towards the Megane Coupe. I shall be going back to the dealer on Saturday. It certainly seemed well screwed together and a level of quality massively ahead of the MK2 we ran.

I have an A6 Avant 2007 that has done 62k. It is about to be serviced and the audi specialist has suggested that I get the cam belt changed. My service book says that the 'toothed' belt (which I assume is the same thing (?)) change is due at 80k. The cost of the change will be £475 so if it is not a problem to delay the change for another 15k it would be good - any ideas? Cheers Read more

I thought the interval was now 60k or 4 years whichever is sooner.

As well as a cam belt kit (including tensioners) it's usually best to get the waterpump/antifreeze changed at the same time whilst it is all in bits.

Hello all,

This is my first post after reading many posts around the 'glow plug' light on my delightful 100,000 mile 2003 TDCi Mondeo. I love the car... when this light isn't on, I get 55 to the gallon and it is amazingly comfortable and safe - a great family car... I hate the car with this light on...... Read more

I would consider the injector side is a reaction to the problem and not the cause on these engines a fully operational EGR valve is extremely important as this will cause the symptoms you describe also if its the later model with the electronic turbo actuator then this causes the same problems. If you take off the EGR valve to test and clean (an easy job) do not forget to remove the plastic inlet manifold and clean that as well this is often left and you will be amazed at the sludge it holds.

If you place your fingure on the actuator arm and apply a slight amount of pressure you can sometimes clear the fault this is one method of testing the actuator. You could as an alternative put a couple of bottles of Fortes trade only cleaner in the tank if you can find a garage to supply you the retail product is not much good....
