Hi,

I have the new model X3 (F25) and the dealer is unable to provide a leadtime on winter tyres.

A local supplier has offered me an authorised BMW set, but looks like for the old model.

Current tyres: 225/60 R17

The size offered is 235/55 R17

Is this likely to be a problem? Customer Service line just reads the parts list out (which is not the same).

Unless the old size is Type-Approved for the new model and listed in the owners manual, your insurer probably won't like it.

Insurers accepting winter tyres not being a modification depends on using the correct specification, ie size.

Hi,

My girlfriend used the car last night and the 'petrol' light was on so she did me a 'favour' and put £25 in it. she then drove it the couple of miles home. I went to use it this morning and it didnt start first time and took a while to settle down and run normal (ish). whilst driving it for around the first half a mile it felt like it was going to cut out.... 2003 will not have DPF, don't think the Mk2 had them at all. When we were looking a couple of years ago the 2.0 did not have them then, all have them now with EURO 5.

As has been said above the damage will already have been done if there is a problem. Diesel pumps require diesel to lubricate them, without it the start wearing rapidly and deposit small metal particles in the injectors if they get past the filter. Only way to check is to drain the system and look for metal particles but its not a DIY job, the pressure in the fuel system can cause serious injuries if not handled correctly....

Hi All,

A question I'm curious to find the answer to. I'll be upgrading the runabout next year and I'm seriously tempted to fit a car-cam in the windscreen. I'm wondering how this works with the insurance bods though. Obvisouly such a device is of significant benefit to them in the event of any claim, but presumably they still consider such fitments as a modification to the vehicle? So one has to wonder whether it affects the policy. I'd like to think that no sane insurance company would hike a premium to cover equipment fitted largely for their benfit, but then we all know what they're like. If you don't declare it and at some point produce the footage as evidence, I can just imagine a smug claims assessor politely advising you that you're not covered anyway so bye bye.... Read more

Hi, My car is 2004 2,0HDI XSI with 56000 miles...
Had a car diagnosed as I was getting antipollution faults...
It got back with 4 faults - FAULTS
I spoke a one mechanic and he advised me to change MASS AIRFLOW METER.
So I have found a few on ebay but that's where the problem starts.
My part number is siemens VDO 5WK9 7001
The one I have on 04 reg 307 is - 04 reg
and the one on 05 reg is - 05 reg
And the one in 05 reg has the same part number as mine. Does that mean I had a wrong part in my car? Which one should I go for...

Hi All,

Currently had a rushed test drive in a 2010 Mondeo Titanium estate today, so I didnt get a chance to explore the car fully. Its fitted with the econetic 115bhp engine. Anyone any views on the performance of this car with a detuned engine? How well does it overtake, and is there a need for a lot of gear-stirring?... Read more

roscoman

hi Craig, thanks for your input.

I agree, i think the 115ps output and combined gearing would be tiresome on non-motorway driving. Im going to hold out for the 140ps version.

The other alternative im looking at is a Mazda6 with the newer 2.2d engine...

Surely dealers shouldn't be selling tyres over 2 years old, never mind 5.

There is a tyre industry recommendation to replace tyres within 7 years of manufacture date....

Hi All, one of my daughters is 22 and trying to insure her first car, a 10 year 1.1 Saxo. She passed her test in July and has since then been a named driver on her partners policy. In fact he's getting another car and she is having the Saxo from him so she been driving the car for a while.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, she is getting quotes of £800 to £1200 through the websites, GoCompare etc, but for reasons I can't recall she has to phone the insurance company direct to complete the deal. She is then being given prices that amount to 50% addition to pay monthly. Is this standard insurance company rip off for young drivers or is somebody making a mistake?... Read more

It's the risk loading the ANPR.

Young drivers have historically had a nasty habit of refusing to pay the remaining charges once they've totalled the vehicle and want to cancel the policy. We all know how suprisingly high the charges to cancel a "pay monthly" policy early can be, now imagine what they're like when your annual premium is well into four figures....

From what I've seen and read on t'Internet, it is generally considered that low-profile tyres are not good in snow, and my local tyre-fitter agrees with that. I also read that in those countries where it's a legal requirement to fit snow tyres, owners prefer to save their expensive alloys from Winter salt damage by changing to steel rims and snow tyres. A smaller wheel gives a narrower tyre for the same overall diameter, and a narrower tyre is also better in snow. A Google search will come up with a couple of alloy-wheel suppliers who are now stocking German-made (KFZ) steel wheels fitted with snow tyres as a full set for most cars. Wheelbasealloys.com is one I've found. This is what they offer for my Fiesta--
