Hi, I had my car parked in a parking lot last year and due to some issues with my hand brake the car started rolling downwards after a couple of hours and collided with another car. No one was in any of the cars when it happened. My insurance company paid out the costs as it was my car that malfunctioned. I actually went ahead and lated paid back the costs to my insurer and the claim was settled and my no claims bonus is not affected. Now the question is - Do I need to declare this claim when I am now applying for insurance? If so should it show as my fault? Thanks, S Read more

MOT CHANGES COULD COST MOTORISTS MONEY

  • First MoT test after four years
  • Motorists could be unaware of defects
  • Could lead to larger repair bills

Government proposals to scrap the annual MoT test will cost motorists dear, according to Stuart Carr of the HiQ fast fit network.

Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond has said he wants to introduce the initial MOT test for new cars after four years instead of three, and to continue testing every other year rather than the current 12 month period.

Mr Carr said: 'The Government is claiming that by considering this change, consumers will save money because modern day cars don't need their vehicles tested as often.

'The worry is that within the extended interim period, motorists will be driving around with defects that could have more severe costs to repair when the vehicle gets tested.'

He added: 'We always call for improvements to the benefits of our business, but in this case, it is important to clarify that we are campaigning on behalf of the consumer, for money saving and safety.’

HiQ is calling for car owners whose cars have failed their MoT to send their local MPs photographic evidence of dangerous parts such as worn brakes and tyres.

It is also compiling a 'chamber of horrors' with which to lobby ministers.... Read more

Perhaps a 2-year MOT for those drivers who can demonstrate that their car has been serviced on-the-dot every year/10K miles or whatever, and a 6-month MOT for those who don't bother?

Too difficult to enforce or administer I would think.

BENTLEY PLOTTING RANGE ROVER RIVAL

  • Bentley Boss Wants To Build Luxurious SUV
  • Predicts Car To Become Biggest Seller
  • Head To Head With Range Rover

Bentley is preparing an ultra-luxurious SUV to take on the next-generation Range Rover, its chairman Wolfgang Durheimer has revealed.

The Volkswagen-owned company has been eyeing up an extra model, beyond its current line-up of Continental variants and the Mulsanne, as it tries to push its projected 2011 sales figure of around 7000 cars towards its all-time high of 10,000 units.

Durheimer told What Car? that he believes a luxurious SUV would appeal to burgeoning markets in China, the Middle East and Russia.

'There is fresh, "undug" ground on the SUV side,' said Durheimer. 'The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S is good, very attractive, but it can be beaten on craftsmanship. If we could produce an SUV with the interior finish of the Mulsanne, we could have a real success in China, the US and Europe. It could be our biggest seller.

There are discussions ongoing with the [VW Group] board; they are pretty advanced talks, but the project does still need approval.'

When asked if the car would be more expensive than the next-generation Range Rover, which is expected to crack through the £150,000 mark, Durheimer said: 'I don't know their exact figures, but the car would be at the top of the market.'

He revealed that the SUV could use V8 power, but reiterated his belief that Bentley should become the VW Group's centre for the future development of 12-cylinder engines.... Read more

Well that's what they're afraid of. But if your target audience want to show off their new toy in Knightsbridge, making it the size of a M1 Abrahms might not be a good move.

And then there's the back-handed compliments from the press "world's first 200mph cathedral", "great handling-for a 2 1/2 tonne beast" and the like....

I recently lost my key/fob, and due to the recession, couldn't afford to buy a new one from vauxhall, so I searched Ebay and aquired a new one with matching door lock and boot lock. After fitting them to my car the central locking works perfectly while the key is in the door but the fob doesn't work as a remote anymore. Can anyone please advise as to how to synchronise the new key so I can use the fob as I used to. Read more

You are correct TH if it's an existing key, but a new one will have to be programmed to the car first. An auto locksmith may be able to do it for reasonable cost.

Hi,

I have a Ford Focus Y Reg and I have a problem with the indicators and also the hazard lights, there is a faint constant buzz, (more of a beep), this is in conjunction with no indicators or hazard lights. When I remove the 10 amp fuse behind the glove compartment the noise stops, I have replaced the fuse with a good fuse and the noise returns. I have also replaced the relay and the problem remains. I have looked on the web and there is a mention of a indicator / hazard light module behind where the stereo is fited?, I have removed the stereo but am unable to find any joy as to where this 'module' could be and also whether this would sort the problem and also what it looks like.... Oh no-much more than £3k. But I'd look to autotrader for an accurate pricing. I think Parkers' are a tad high.

My 2004 Jazz has wandering steering when trying to go in a straight line. It has been like this from new and seems worse now I have just had new tyres on the front. My garage says this is normal for electric assistance steering but I find it annoying especially on motorways. Is it something I have to live with or should I be worried. I believe the latest model Jazz has more precise steering. Read more

we used to have a 2007 jazz and it was exactly the same by the sounds of things. Barely noticible around town but any situation not needing frequent steering adjustments was very strange until i just accepted that this is the way it will be no matter what.

i don't think you've anything to worry about although the perticular tyre you've just had fitted might have exaggerated the problem. perhaps try swapping tyres front to back and see if it reduces? if it does leave them as they are and when the fronts need replacing avoid the tyre that is now on the rear wheels.

Hi, I have a Spanish registered left hand drive Fiesta with a damaged manual door mirror on the passenger (right hand) side. They seem to be considerably cheaper to buy in UK, and they look just the same, but does anyone know if a mirror for a right hand drive car will fit OK ie, can it be angled in far enough to be seen from the drivers seat?

Thanks,... Read more

Thanks for the info and taking the trouble to reply.

Looking around they seem a bit more expensive than that here in Spain, and I lack the ability to order from NL so I have ordered complete assembly in UK for delivery to my home address for 21 GBP which I think is not bad....

Hi All,

We have a march 2007 mx5 54000 miles and always serviced by mazda at proper intervals. Car developed a rattle on cold starting one month after warranty ran out. We bought it June 2010 and had a years zoom zoom warranty. Mazda says variable valve timing gear and timing chain are worn and need replacement at a cost of over £1000. I think this is unacceptable. Any advice would be much appreciated.... Read more
