My girlfriend was reversing out of a space in a car park. She checked before reversing and there was nothing around. As she was reversing a people carrier appeared and tried to pass her quickly as she was reversing and the two collided. Who is at fault here? Is she at fault for reversing or should the other car have stopped because they would see an obstruction ahead of someone doing a maneuvre? There is damage to both cars and I think insurance companies are going to get involved.... Read more
OK. I'm currently driving an '03 Focus TDCI, lowered and remapped, but after 5 years I'm considering a change and would like something a bit sportier and more responsive to drive BUT also want decent fuel economy (i.e: 40mpg+), a car with enough space to put my bike in or which can take a towbar for a proper bike rack, with a high enough top gear for relaxed motorway cruising. I also don't fancy a diesel with a DPF, so have been looking at older diesels pre-05 and those without filters. I can spend up to £7k.
So far I've considered:... Read more
@corax: I had considered the old-shape Ibiza PD130. I'd heard they were a bit unrefined and hard-riding though and the interiors are pretty cheap and plasticky. Having driven a VW Polo TDI 130 the performance is certainly good in a car of that size, and I'm thinking a Polo or Fabia might be a better bet than the Ibiza for a bit more comfort and refinement.
Thanks for everyone for their suggestions so far!...

I saw Frost/Nixon. I used to watch Through the Keyhole with my grandma when I was little too. Super.
My golf will suddenly lose power after driving for around an hour at motorway speed. It seems as though the turbo cuts out as I can't get above 60 mph. If I stop the car for a moment then restart everything is normal. It's just happened 3 times during a 200 mile journey.
My local garage wired it up to their computor but no fault was recorded so they are uable to cure the problem. Is it worth while taking the car to a VW specialist and will they have more sophisticated equipment to diagnose the fault?... Read more
I think the the management system is defaulting to 'limp home mode' which I suppose is a bit like a computor going into safety mode and having to reboot. I will get the turbo stripped down and cleaned and will update you. Thanks for the replies.
Hi, I could use some help and advise. I recently paid to have a replacement engine installed in my Grand Voyager. The next day I drove approx 30miles. As I was parking I suddenly lost power steering and steam started coming out of the bonnet. When I opened it up there was a burst water pipe which was spewing out very hot water and coolant. Also the belt was hanging off.
I am not mechanically minded but was told that this type of engine does not have a timing belt. Instead this belt is used to run things like power steering, water pump, air conditioning, alternator etc.... Read more
Moved to Technical. There's another thread started recently about this same model: one to sell I'd say, also bearing in mind its poor NCAP rating.
I was on the M25 on Thursday afternoon when a real cloudburst occurred just as I approached the M$ junction clockwise.
This is at the best of times, a tricky place as it becomes something like 6 lanes.Inevitably, despite several miles of signs, people try to cross 3 or 4 lanes in a hurry when they realise the M4 is where they need to go.... Read more

Looking at 2 year old qashqai from dealership, 18000 miles. They said they need to replace the discs and pads before we test drive. Is this too soon to need replacement brake discs and pads? Could there be issues with the rest of the car? Please advise... Read more
Depend how the cars been driven, but not unreasonable especially on the front.
Good idea to change disc and pads as pads are made of harder material since they were banned from using abestos. Brake disca are service items and should be changed of worn or pitted
